At its core, the story of The Hunger Games is about the power of one person to change the world.
Set in the future remnants of the USA in a new nation called Panem, one male and one female "tribute" between the ages of 11 and 18 from each of Panem's twelve districts is forced to participate in an annual competition called the Hunger Games, which is broadcast live throughout the country for the entertainment of the Capitol's wealthy residents.
Now, bestselling author Suzanne Collins and the world of The Hunger Games return in her latest addition to the series: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.

What I loved about the writing here is there was no real "happily ever after". They are broken shells of what they used to be before the initial game. The director kept that in and didn't "love wash" it out with the "oh we recovered and are super happy" ending you so often see. They are healing but have a long way to go and it leaves you there. Just perfect

I couldn't have agreed more. The "love conquers all" stereotype is so overly used that it just feels so fake & halfassed. This is the most realistic and happier outcome of the series. They're not at their happiest yet but they're working on it.

I disagree in that they're broken shells of who they used to be. In a lot of ways, if that were true, Peeta would still be trying to murder Katniss thanks to his brainwashing and Katniss would've kicked Buttercup out of the house. She would've never had children. They're different, but in a way, freer since Paylor is President of Panem. Remembering those who died and honouring them, but not letting all that mourning take them away into the afterlife prematurely, either.

Yes, and I also love that it doesn't go too far in the other direction. It's not a completely hopeless, bleak ending. The events of the story had true impact, Katniss and Peeta are realistically traumatized... but they are also healing, and they have each other for support. There is hope for improvement to their mental health, and their children will live in a better, safer world. There is also something very beautiful in the fact that their feelings for each other survived all of this. Not in the "love magically conquers all" way, but in more in a "we have deep scars in our souls, but we value each other enough to put in the effort and share the burden together" kind of way.

Imagine volunteering as tribute to save your sister, going through hell multiple times to protect her, overthrowing not one, but two governments, only to lose her in the end anyways. Can you imagine the toll it took on Katniss' mind thinking this? Even with the impeccable acting by Jennifer Lawrence, all that raw emotion and trauma portrayed, I think we only saw the surface of what was going inside the character's head and soul.

The books in the end reference how Peeta would grip the edges of chairs or tables, holding onto anything for dear life, in an effort to keep himself tethered to the present while his mind is a waking nightmare. Katniss has to watch him work through it and reassures him as much as possible about what is real and what is not. She laments that she has to one day explain to their children why she has nightmares, and why Peeta sometimes goes quiet and asks about reality. I really wish they touched on Peeta having these episodes more than just during the war when he wasn’t completely recovered or in the right state to be on the battlefield. The ending was brilliant but I wish during the montage of them existing together had a scene where he’s holding something and asks her a question like “you want to hurt me, real or not real?” And having her say “not real, never real.” Or something and her holding him. It would’ve been a nice touch but the ending is pretty great regardless.

Suzanne Collins is a genius. The way she wrote Lucy and Snow's relationship to be a direct contrast to Katniss and Peeta's is just brilliant. I think Snow hated/feared them both (as individuals and as a unit) for several reasons, but one of them had to be the genuine love they ultimately developed for each other. I think he probably resented it because it was more of a powerful influence on the people than his attempts to forcibly control the population. Their love and compassion in the face of a cruel and unforgiving world was proof that his theory at the end of Ballad (that all of humanity is naturally barbaric and needs to be strictly controlled) was wrong. And if there's one thing a narcissist hates, it's being proven wrong about anything. Plus, they not only proved him wrong but they also proved Lucy _right_ about humans having an inherent goodness that we can either choose to act on or deny. He wanted to forget Lucy ever existed but Everlark constantly shoved the memory of her in his face. No wonder he wanted to destroy both of them.

I love Katniss' face when Peeta says Primrose. In that moment, Peeta became her safe space again. Forget romantic love (which I'm a hardcore Peeta/Katniss' shipper), she lost her feelings of security when Peeta got hijacked. With that line, she knew she got him back fully. Even with the scars they both would have throughout the years, they would work through it together.

I 100% agree. In the book him coming back and doing saying that, is what gets her whole healing process started. Before that, she didn't care about anything, was more or less catatonic, just waiting to die. Only after he came back, did she manage to start hunting again, grooming.. The cat scene also happened afterwards. Why? Because she loved him, of course, but also because he had always represented hope to her (the dandelion). He had also represented security, like you say, and she finally got that back.

This series is great. Alot of people mentioned that Katniss is just staring out the window in a ptsd state, but what I think people are missing is the fact that Katniss was basically a huge celebrity, and now that the rebellion is over, she is going home to ruins and rubble as what she was before this all started: just another young woman. She gets no reward, no accolades for being the "Mockingjay". The train ride home is quiet, there's no adoring fans or crowds to cheer her on. And despite "winning" the political battle, being the Mockingjay, she cannot bring back her sister. It just hammers home the utter tragedy of the events and plays to one of the major themes of the series (authenticity/honesty).

@Ironarm011

@@Winter-Alpha-OmegaIt starts in the first movie with Katniss and Peeta faking their romance to get them through the Games. The scenes of her being on stage are done in such a way to clue in to the audience that it's all fake and done for show. Even Haymitch tells her she has to play up the crowd. In the 2nd movie Katniss agrees with Snow "never to lie to one another". Snow wants her to pretend and convince everyone that she and Peeta are in love. When Katniss and Peeta do the victory tour, she goes off script and things get ugly. In the Arena in the 2nd movie she recognizes that Finnick isn't lying to her and he isn't the "real enemy". Once again authenticity comes up during the Rebellion when Katniss can't do the fake advertisement and instead chooses to go on the front lines for real. It's Katnisses' honesty and integrity that wins people over to her side time and time again. Again it saves her in the last movie when a man holds her at gunpoint. Of course the big moment is after the rebellion wins, and she visits Snow and Snow informs her that Coin bombed her sister. She doesn't believe him, and then Snow reminds her that they agreed never to lie to one another 😏 So this helps her make the ultimate correct choice in killing Coin. The Katniss Peeta romance relationship of "real, not real". Restoring Peetas memories with truth and honesty and being honest about their feelings for one another no longer being a fake show for the cameras but something real when the show and Games are over and they're all alone with one another.

The one time I went on vacation without my dog I left her at my friend's house for a week. On day 5 she broke out of the yard and went on one of her adventures. She was captured 2 streets from my house. I'd never walked to my friend's house with her because it was too far. She was a 20# white dog, so someone stopped and picked her up. She was actually very distinct looking as a lhasa/beagle mix. Her groomer recognized her on FB as the found dog and called me 😂😂😂 I couldn't believe she traveled so far without getting into trouble

The short shot of Katniss looking out in the train was SO sad. It's like she's contemplating all she went through, and it's too much to even get emotional about so she just... stares, with a painful yet blank expression, just about ready to break down. And then buttercup. Just so sad... Jennifer Lawrence's acting was amazing.

Honestly, I feel so sad, because Katniss' mum stayed in District 2. Does she know her grandchildren? Has she visited Katniss in the long time that passed between the epilogue and these scenes? What happened with Gale? Did he create his own family? How is poor Annie dealing with being a single mother? What happened with Effie after the war? What became of Haymitch? Is District 13 still active or did its inhabitants move into other parts of Panem?

Everyone was free. Free to travel wherever they wanted, get married or not. Of courses Katniss' mum visited or even stayed with them. Why wouldn't she??? They were not stuck in their districts anymore. Lol The others' life journey is not shown because they're focusing on Peeta and Katniss and their journey and love story. You have to use your imagination for the rest.

I find it very interesting that not only did Snow and Lucy match Peeta and Katniss physically, but that after Snow saw in the Quarter Quell that they actually really loved each other, he tried to get them to turn on each other. Break their bond. Take the other out. Just like…well, if you know the prequel, you know exactly what I’m referring to. He clearly didn’t succeed. Everlark is pure goals and would’ve followed each other to the ends of the earth. 😉

I don’t think that is the parallel. I think the parallel is Katniss and Gale. Lucy and Katniss were both initially besotted with Snow and Gale, but they were two people that were headed in opposite directions. One side wanted normalcy and peace and freedom, while the other side had ambition and anger quiet anger, which is what pulled them apart.

I didn’t realize until I rewatched that it parallels the scene from ‘The Hunger Games’ where she and Peeta sit in the same positions, looking out the window of the penthouse. The night before entering the Arena, Peeta was so sure of death, but emphasized that he didn’t want to lose himself and be a pawn of the Capitol. Now, years later, here he sits, having become the one thing he didn’t want to be…but he has survived. The Capitol and Snow could not ultimately succeed because he fought his way back to Katniss. He has come out the other side a true victor. I think this is what Katniss is thinking when she smiles.

There are worse games to play x Deep in the meadow was a perfect way to musically end the film. The two catalysts for the rebellion happening - Rue and Prim are represented by both songs. Rue’s farewell/theme and the song Katniss sang to prim the first time we saw her.

Imagine her thoughts when Prim died. Prim was the one she volunteered for, and experienced the trauma of the first games for, then consequently, the Quarter Quell. If not for Prim's sake, then what was the point of all of it? The scene where Katniss breaks down is just gut wrenching and says so much with so few words.

I also really liked how we got to see Katniss and Peeta be together finally after everything that happened for both of them to live happily as best they could. It’s just sad that Peeta never really went back to who he was in the beginning but he’s still there healing after everything that happened to him. 🥺

god this movie (story) is amazing. I love them for being real, for not sugar coating the very real trauma these characters endured to find, what I would consider an actual and real "happily ever after" or as best as anyone can. It's why films like these are so important and I'm so proud that they stuck the landing in the end. This franchise has been sidelined and taken seriously given it's status as YA when it galvanized an entire generation who is now entering their 40s with tons of trauma continuing to pile up. Truly proud of the caliber of actors and director and composer and etc etc who DID take the material seriously and DID see it the value of the message at its core, one that a generation NEEDED to see and understand. For a lot of the viewers, we WERE District 1, 2, or 3 when Hunger Games came barreling through and shattered the illusion for us to only a decade later see if play out yet again on both national and international stages. Films like these hold space for acknowledging that trauma and normalizing a more honest version of what "happily ever after" is.

The movies got so much wrong about Peeta's effect on Katniss and made him so weak. I think not depicting Katniss's rise from grief, because of Peeta's return, was a missed opportunity. Especially because the actor who played Peeta really did a great job in depicting the hijacking.

Same. I’ve been wanting this for years now and have been denied the satisfaction 😭😩💔. It’s quite literally the most heartbreaking feeling, that they never created more movies/books with these two characters who were the complete embodiment of true love and who looked out for and cared for each other so much. A pure unconditional love that I wanted to see so much more of and don’t get me wrong, it was good to see Snows backstory with Lucy Gray but I would’ve loved seeing more of Peeta’s and Katniss’ life together, and Haymitch. Effie, Johanna and Annie too. Maybe have Katniss’ mum come home and be around her grandchildren. Buttercup the survivor kittie. The wholesome beauty of the new panem with its kind and caring president. But with the movie mostly focused on Peeta and Katniss and the family they created together 🖤 Just would’ve been the absolute best and I hope a movie just like this with these two characters comes to pass in the future ! One can hope 🖤.
