This is a reminder to my past...
Well, today we worked on a very special engine; 2015 DV6 Ford Transit Connect. I learnt a very valuable lesson with this engine, I ought to say it will never happen again (or at least I hope it doesnt happen again!).
We then worked on a 2015 Vauxhall Combo 1.3 for a Clutch Replacement. This vehicle was forwarded to us by Advanced Mobile Motor Care. This vehicle's clutch was slipping and rattling quite badly. We then found out that a very important clutch component had failed.

No matter how many timing belt jobs you do that first turn of the key does make you nervous, and then a few seconds after you swear you hear a noise that wasn’t there before 😂

Your final check of timing marks / locking pins, and talking yourself through which bits have been tightened is a great way to make sure it’s all done correctly. I only subscribed a couple of days ago and have nearly binge watched all your vlogs. Love the way you do things properly, you are clearly very skilled and I appreciate your honesty in pointing out any mistakes. Best of luck with work and your channel.

Wow realy take my hat off for you guys. Here in Denmark im not aware if there are any mobile mechanics driving arround doing this kind of jobs outside on the pavement. Think that most mechanics here are working in a fancy workshop either at a dealership or independent workshops, all with light grey floors and high prices. Great job 👍👍👍👍👍

I rotate the engine several times and repeatedly check the timing marks. I ain't no mechanic but I've grown up around bikes and cars since I was little. I'm 54 now and still cringe on fire up.. I tend to use chaulk or tippex on each bolt I've torqued up so I know the main points are finished across the bolt to mating surface so you can see if they have moved

My dad used to take the spark plugs out and turn the engine over by hand to get the locking pins in. Then he removed the old timing belt. Once he had fitted the new belt he would turn the engine over by hand to check everything was ok. On belts he was a bit unsure of, he got his pins in and then marked the pulleys and belts and also wrote on the belt where the crank pulley and the cam pulley were. He removed the old belt and then counted the teeth between each mark. He would then copy the marks and writing on to the new belt and count the teeth between these marks. The new belt's marks were lined up with the pulley marks. That seems like overkill but in the old days, it was not unheard of to be given the wrong timing belt. He often left the trade counter with a few timing belts for just one job on a "use-or-return". Like a lot of us with older motors, I do my own servicing. My C3 is 7 years old and has 50k on it. I got the service and belt done at established garage last year. Cost over 500 for that service (nearly half of that was the material cost of the belt and water pump). This was so I can get it logged (and the stamp in the service book as well). Its not worth skimping on a timing belt. My nieghbours 2011 Puegeot 206 had it's timing belt go just last year. Cost well over a grand to get the engine repaired. Only 50k on the odometer but the belt was over 10 years old. Hard lesson.

Even non starts, i dont really ever crank one over hoping it will start. I will either know its not going to or it will. comes with experience bro and from what i see youre well on your way to being one of those mechanics that every shop boss begs for. Disadvantage to you with that is you end up being the one that gets handed all the crap jobs that no one else can or will do...

Another great video, engine looks similar to my mrs Volvo c30, I changed the cambelt and water pump for a gates kit. There was a Dayco belt in there that was still in good condition after 7 years of her ownership! The tensioner wasn’t in the middle and their was a lip on the rollers tho 😮. This was my 1st cambelt change and like you say was very worried when starting for the first time 😬 Gates kit says no silicone on the water pump gasket. As long as you clean the mating face(like you did) you should be fine. Keep the videos coming, great to see you Chanel growing 👊👊👊

I agree, no sealant or instant gasket etc required when fitting a new gasket for a water pump. Clean the surfaces properly and it will seal fine. Always rotate the engine at least one full rotation by hand and re-check the timing marks before starting it, I'm never worried about starting it after doing that.

You check the engine before to see if it's running, had a person trying to scam me. He wanted the cam belt changed, he said he been to several garages. But too expensive, so I asked for the key he said what for I said I just want to here the engine and bingo it was dead no compression and he said we're it was working yesterday. And this is why I always check as people will try anything

If the water pumps is supplied only with thin gasket paper, like you have in the video, I put just a tiny bit of sealer on there but it is not necessary. It is just my experience I had had in past with three water pumps in a row. And yes, always scared after cam belt or head gasket job, always nervous. If I have finished the car before lunch break, I start it up after just in case something goes wrong and I loose appetite haha

Once a waited five mins before turning the key after i was done with the belt. Also, like you, i never put gasket maker onto a gasket. They can be a real pain to remove the water pump if the thing was put on with sealant the last time the belt was done. Cheers Matt
