#TheBlackTable w/ Dr. Greg Carr: "The Enigma of Clarence Thomas"
In the first examination of its kind, Corey Robin- one of the foremost analysts of the right deconstructs Thomas revealing many things we do not know about the Supreme Court Justice. Thomas is a black nationalist. a In college he memorized the speeches of Malcolm X. He believes white people are incurably racist.

I'll repeat, Clarence Thomas clearly justifies why the Supreme Court Justice appointments should not be a lifetime appointment! They should have to be reelected like our other branches of government. Too much p0ower given in these appointments! If they had to be reelected they would clearly be more humble and show less bias and do the job the way it was supposed to be done.

I 100% agree. This video made me feel like Thomas has yet to grow with time. Thus he is not fixed to rule on decisions in the present day because he is holding on to past ideas. Regarding his grandfather, he was an exception, and Thomas seems to think it was the rule. It is also crazy to have us work so hard to get this far and then say he wants us to go back and give all power back to white people.

I've read the book, "The Enigma of Clarence Thomas".....and, I've listened to this interview a few times. The complexities of race and racism....and how it leaves one feeling....is both fascinating and exhausting. When Thomas was nominated by George Bush Senior to sit on the Court & he was introduced to the media, Thomas broke down in tears, crying about how grateful he was to be considered. That says it all about what an inferiority complex this evil doer carries with him. His hatred of the black race, his complete & utter hostility for any program, legislation, or policy that would assist people of color, immigrants, & poor people struggling to overcome their circumstances, speaks volumes about this unqualified maggot that does the far right's bidding. Alito is another fanatic along with the other genuflecting justices who pledge their loyalty, not to America, not to the Constitution, but to the powerful, privileged few. These justices are NOT CONSERVATIVES, that distorts the very meaning of what conservatism represents. These extremists represent the most vile characters throughout history. The tragedy of these 6 justices who have twisted the Constitution is the harm that they have inflicted on the United States. As you marginalize working people, it seriously negatively impacts positive growth & productivity, it limits the discretionary income that the working people need to sustain them, but more importantly it undercuts the standard of living for all of us creating a world filled with hate, bigotry, & xenophobia. Maybe it was meant to be because of the inadequacies of the human condition. Destroying the planet, worshipping wealth & power, idolizing the cult of personality are all misguided values.

This conversation confirms for me what I thought of Clarence. He is just vomiting up the emotional pain he suffered as a kid and he is justifying it in 500 page decisions. He is inflicting that pain on his black brothers and sisters just as they inflicted the emotional pain on him as a kid by calling him ABC, America's blackest child. Coupled that with the severe beatings at the hands of his grandfather and you have a toxic stew that is being vomited up. To paraphrase William Barr, whom I disagree with politically but agree with him on this point, public office should not be used as a therapy session. Clarence would be well advised to go get some emotional therapy to exorcise that emotional pain he suffered as a kid, maybe then he could see his way forward to the light.

I wonder what good he might have achieved if he had been loved and cherished by his family, and accepted by other black children. Instead, we get to experience all the evil that he can inflict on society as retribution for the pain and anguish that was inflicted on him. I feel sorry for him.

This is an apologist conversation for Thomas' negative views of Black folks. Thomas was damaged beyond repair by white folks during his upbringing and has been trying to erase that personal hurt his whole life while at the same time accepting white patronage at every step. Now that he's in position to help he instead has decided to mentally erase his past. He wanted/wants notoriety for his stances, well he will get it in this life and the after in the memories of those who he stepped on to gain it. His name will be a stain in history to those he negatively affected.

This is the most important discussion that I've ever watched on KZfaq. It confirmed what I have always known. Namely that there's always been a strong reactionary current of Black Nationalism and Pan-Africanism. I have written a theory comparing Zionism to Pan-Africanism which posits that Zionism encourages Antisemitism and needs it in order to survive just as Pan-Africanism encourages anti-Black racism in order to maintain its ideology. Clarence Thomas is the Teodor Herzl of the USA today. When the USA turns into a full blown totalitarian fascist state, then we can look at Clarence Thomas at the intellectual leader and jurist that created and enabled it. Thank you for posting this vitally important interview!

You think Pan Africanism encourages Anti black racism? What slavery, Jim Crow, colonialism, neo-colonialism didn’t do that? You’re drawing inappropriate and false parallels. Pan Africanism doesn’t need or encourage anti black racism. That already exists and always will. Pan Africanism is merely the buffer to shield Africans from it. It’s like saying carrying an umbrella encourages rain. Of course you don’t want rain but since you can’t stop it, better be prepared. Your logic is flawed. Reconsider.

What a wonderful way to better educate us that encourages a discussion and thought process that's more nuanced & well-rounded. Frankly, I don't like Clarence Thomas. To be sure, I am putting it more politely than my thoughts and emotions when hearing his name. However, what I am hearing is the story of a man whose ideological premise is largely correct IN A PERFECT WORLD. One never really knows a person unless they have spent some meaningful time with them. But my dual careers as an actor & early career life & mental health therapist, leads me to think of someone who has been significantly damaged psychologically, starting with his younger years to this day. Coupled with a hardline "parent" who was physically and mentally abusive, I believe Thomas's unresolved issues need to be addressed. There are too many alarming things about the man, and his pre & post Judge background that reveals how we need to find better ways to fight against Thomas and his cohorts. I believe the biggest flaw in his overall lifelong stance is the inability to understand that HIS journey is NOT the same as millions of others whose lives and survival depends on his decisions. One offer of constructive feedback I have is that the show and his guest is the lack of a "call to action." I wasn't clear about the roads we need to travel, given the real danger many of us face because of Clarence Thomas. What must we do about it?

For starters, this is indeed a great interview. And, it’s now clearer to me that Clarence’s greatest struggles occur every day he looks into a mirror. Being Black appears to have brought him the most pain, so he constantly seeks revenge. But, in all of his intelligence, perhaps he will never understand that vengeance only deepens the pain and pushes him further away from the embrace of real Black acceptance.

This interview is brilliant! Thank you Dr Carr and Roland Martin for organizing this. Dr Robin is spot on. Great historical context of Clarence Thomas. Clarence Thomas has always fascinated me ever since I saw him at his SC hearings. At the time, I was a Republican, so I supported Thomas. I thought Anita Hill overreacted with her charges. However, over the years, as I learned more about Thomas and Hill, there is no doubt Thomas committed all those sexual harassment acts against Hill. The guy is guilty as charged. The more I learned about Thomas, the more confused I became. The guy is a trapping of contradictions. He is all over the map. He has no real convictions other than causing havocs to people and society. On one hand, he claims to be an originalist to the Constitution. Then as he issues his opinions and votes, he plucks things out of thin air that are not in the Constitution or not at the time the Founders wrote it. For example, in the NY Hand Law case, Thomas wrote: “It is extremely improbable that the Framers understood the Second Amendment to protect little more than carrying a gun from the bedroom to the kitchen.” Now, how does he know that? He just made it up. This guy is a magician. He uses magic to frame his opinions. When the framers wrote the 2nd Amendment, as a textualist, he should have realized that the firearms in those days are simple single-shot pistols and muskets. Therefore, as an Originalist, he should base his rulings on that. But he doesn't. That's the enigma of Thomas. He claims to be one thing and does the opposite. This guy is full of confusions and contradictions. He is unqualified to be on the Court albeit a corrupt one.

Clarence Thomas has internalized racism issues just like Candace Owens. Both of them benefited from Affirmative Action and help from Black organizations like the NAACP, but now hate them. The organizations and programs that helped them get where they are at in life. Thomas is a weak mind individual. Instead of getting upset or mad at the White racist men who bullied him for benefiting from affirmative action in college, he took their side. He wanted to be like them. Internalized racism is real. In a society where racial prejudice thrives in politics, communities, institutions and popular culture, it’s difficult for SOME people of color to avoid absorbing the racist messages that constantly bombard them. Thus, people of color sometimes adopt a white supremacist mindset that results in self-hatred and hatred of their respective racial group. Those people are weak minded and seek white validation. People like Clarence Thomas don't know who they are, they hate their own race and wish they where not Black or a person of color

Hates his skin so much he wants to distance himself from it. Yet wakes up every morning and has to look in the mirror.

No. He is simply a Constitutionalist in there vain of Scalia, but I would say even more so. It really is that simply, people are overcomplicating this honestly. Frankly Clarence Thomas is pretty damn good with his rulings, expressly because he does his job as he is supposed to. By looking at the text, history and tradition of the Constitution and taking it for what it is, (unlike Sotomayor or Kagan, who subscribe to living document theory).
