Agreed, Audacity is one of those programs that if it didn't exist... it would still exist. It's so important, it has to exist.

audacity is easily the most powerful entry level DAW out there. I used to back in the early days myself. I love hearing when people use it, but it definitely isn't nearly as powerful as other programs out there. but i think that's what's so great about it! it's format isn't as complicated as others, but is extremely similar so when you feel comfortable with it you could take on something more complicated. audio journey is often audacity to reaper to cubase/pro tools/ableton/logic/etc. granted these days reaper is just as functional as the other (well midi needs a LOT of work there, but it's come a long way).

Heh my journey was… Audacity > Sony ACID Pro > Logic Pro > Pro Tools > REAPER > Nuendo > REAPER. REAPER is just too good for game audio sound design!

I don't use Audacity, but it helps me pay the bills. I'm an audio engineer at a small dialogue focused production house and, since the pandemic started, most of our narrators nowadays record remotely via Audacity. Huge, HUGE thank you to everyone that contribuited to it's development over the years.

I started using it in 2006 when I began transferring vinyl > 24/96 digital. there arent many programs from 18 years ago that I still use (barely any) but I STILL use Audacity in the post bounce down / mastering stage of music production. its a great, fast editor. re-drawing peaks, volume matching...and visual inspections of a stereo file. long live Audacity!

This was very insightful. I use Audacity to remove the background noise from my podcasts. I've used Adobe Audition in the past too, which is great, but too expense to simply remove noise from a podcast. Although Audition's de-echo feature is amazing to be fair. Descript was doing the job fine with the Studio Sound functionality, until recently when it has stopped working properly.

Great overview - it's one of those programs that gets forgotten amongst the bling and glitz of bigger, newer, flashier programs. However... (yes, I am That Guy - LOL!) "simplistic" does not mean "simple" - "simple" means "easy to understand and use"; "simplistic" means "overly simplified to the point where important aspects or features are omitted". Audacity is definitely simple, but certainly not simplistic. Just so's you know ;-)

Deleting my comment because mentioning the audacity break of the GPL license and the resulting fork of tenacity is poor, This video sadly omits the latest and really not nice story of audacity.
