The reason why Melodyne sounds more transparent than traditional Autotune, even at extreme settings, is because Melodyne does not alter the sound in realtime, but offline. When a new pitch appears Autotune has to first identify this pitch, which just takes some time because it's physically impossible to do it faster. Only then Autotune can drift to the new pitch and that's the "popping" you hear. Melodyne has already calculated all that stuff when you imported the vocals so every transition is just butter smooth. I don't mean to say Autotune sounds bad though. Those pitch drifts are a vibe in itself. However I'd also always choose Melodyne over Autoune, which I did. I didn't buy Autotune yet, even though I like the sound. It's too expensive for something that can't even be as transparent as Melodyne. Too much of a price for a gimmicky sound.

Interesting that auto-tune isn't used as much, everyone uses that term as an umbrella for pitch correction now... i wonder why melodyne isn't as known?

Fascinating overview - but it would have been nice to have heard the examples you were editing and playing about with on screen.

Melodyne is really great! it's WHY i hate autotune. it's because autotune isn't good pitch correction it's just an effect that sounds bad and unnatural imo. if you want that sound great, but i don't ever need that. pitch correction really comes in handy after the fact. especially if the singer isn't able to re-record it again or the budget is maxed out already. I've used it on instruments and vocals. often though i don't use it the way people think. instead of looking for perfect pitch i use it to generate better harmonies to the most natural and good sounding take which is often not perfect. I'll use it to match harmonies and doubles to the original vocal, which was often comped and edited, while the other parts were less heavily edited. the amount of time this saves is insane. imo the lead vocal should feel raw and emotional vs perfect. many singers struggle replicating the exact performance, so that's where melodyne comes in. I also want to say that voc align is a game changer and life saver for this too, but sometimes it doesn't always work great and i need to tweak things a lot after the fact with melodyne. I've been able to take demos and turn them into productions.
