The Equalizer Blu-ray/DVD Exclusive Online Clip. In The Equalizer, Denzel Washington plays McCall, a man who believes he has put his mysterious past behind him and dedicated himself to beginning a new, quiet life. But when McCall meets Teri (Chloë Grace Moretz), a young girl under the control of ultra-violent Russian gangsters, he can’t stand idly by, he has to help her. Armed with hidden skills that allow him to serve vengeance against anyone who would brutalize the helpless, McCall comes out of his self-imposed retirement and finds his desire for justice reawakened. If someone has a problem, if the odds are stacked against them, if they have nowhere else to turn, McCall will help. He is The Equalizer.
The film is directed by Antoine Fuqua from a screenplay by Richard Wenk based on a television series by Michael Sloan and Richard Lindheim. Executive producers include David J. Bloomfield, Ezra Swerdlow and Ben Waisbren. Producers include Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Tony Eldridge, Mace Neufeld, Alex Siskin, Michael Sloan, Steve Tisch, Denzel Washington, Richard Wenk, Lance Johnson, Molly Allen and Kat Samick.

Yeah man. Denzel has a knack for subtle moves like that to create conflict and raise tension. He's from NY and it used to be a thing in tough parts of the city to get in somebody's face with a certain look and body language that was intimidating. I don't know if it's in the script or not.

Yup. There's a long history of this going back to Cooper, Gable, McQueen, Wayne...extending all the way up to Costner, Connery, Eastwood, Bridges, Russell, Smith, Jones, yadda, yadda, yadda. Pretty common for this to be the case with 'movie stars' as opposed to 'actors'. (Hmm... And the same thing happens with musicians! Whaddya know?)

You need oxygen to fight, just like fire needs it to stay lit. Cut off the oxygen and you can't think straight or perform as well. It's an amazingly simple way to stop an attacker. When your priorities shift from attacking your target to fighting to keep breathing, you can't afford to stay on offense. BTW Denzel boxes.

I just felt like the ending fight between the two (McCall and Nikolai) did no justice to the level of villain Nikolai had built for himself throughout the movie. It felt like there was more that could have been done with its direction.

You can't help but love this character created by Denzel Washington. Initially, I did't get some of the elements to his personality, like why he always started his stopwatch before a physical encounter, but after reading several articles, now I get it, and I like him and the movies even more. Robert McCall has OCD, which is why he folds his napkin a certain way, why he places items in a row, why he closes the door three times, and why he starts his stopwatch before he dispatches a room full of people. I also love the Bourne movies, and this series is every bit as good.

It was a 1980s TV show, and not actually created by or for Denzel. Additionally, even the 80's show was a play off The Punisher who was a play off The Executioner who was a more lethal version of James Bond.

It was an intentionally-bad lie. As the other guy said, he was making a thinly-veiled threat because he knew McCall wasn't buying his act and so he wanted to try to intimidate him.

The way he sensed him sneaking up the stairs, when climbing he was holding balustrade which has made keys to move. This is such a neat detail. And he met him out before he reached the door. Can't sneak up on clandestine specialist. Already showed his superiority. Ex specnaz is smiling but he knows he was caught.

"Equalizer" 1 was excellent in performances, direction and cinematography. So many small, subtle things in here, too. When he meets the chief thug pretending to be a cop, he knows immediately that this is rotten and needs to establish that he's on to the guy. Note how he steps out of his doorway and presses close to Nikolai/Teddy to demonstrate he's the real aggressor here and won't be intimidated, then interrogates Nikolai rather than the other way around--"We who?....We who?" He's the ultimate in cool and self-confidence, not the least affected by those trying to menace him.

There was a tv series in the early eighties these movies derived from ( Equalizer 1&2 ). The main character was a retired British MI-6 agent. It was a decent show, I liked it. There should be episodes on KZfaq.
