Located at the northeast foot of the Montemuro mountain range and 12 km from the Douro River, Lamego is the capital of the Douro Sul Tourism Region. Excellent epicenter in the production of liqueur and sparkling wines, it is in Lamego that we will find the roots of the famous Port wine, as it was in this city that, in the 16th century, an English merchant discovered the precious nectar, taking its fame to England. Lamego knew, in the 18th century, a time of great prosperity when a "fine wine" was produced here, which was the origin of the famous Port wine. Lamego has much more history than we imagined when we visited this city by car and stayed just along its avenue. As we explore its oldest streets, we discover noble houses, and typical houses from the Douro region "intertwined" with medieval constructions such as the wall and its doors, Romanesque chapels with Arab names.....in short, a mixture that captive if we dare to walk through its streets.
