Around five years ago Bunnahabhain 12 Years Old was revised up from the well regarded (but somewhat boring) 40% to a 46.3% un-chillfiltered reformulation that won almost universal acclaim. In more recent years, the blend has continued to evolve into a more sherry influenced dram. We compare a bottle from 2015 with one from 2019 and find the difference is really quite marked.

Congrats for this awesome video fellas. Here, this is my review for Bunnahabhain 12; Nose: Quite fresh and sweet with notes of caramel, sherry, vanilla, grape molasses and apple pie. Palate: Soft enough. Raisins, vanilla, oak, spice, sherry and subtle peat notes. Finish: Long finish. Oaky, salty, spicy with sherry notes. Not one of my favourite single malts, but good stuff for the money. A whisky enthusiast from Turkey. Slàinte Mhath!

Great review! Your description of balance and complexity is convincing enough that I will be seeking a bottle. For the last video of the session, you guys did exceptionally well.

Great review fellas. You guys rock. Come to think of I hold your reviews as thorough and well received as anyone else’s on KZfaq. In this case this bottle is not a consensus thumbs up from all reviewers. That being said I happen to love this dram as much as you do. Funny, upon opening this bottle and having that “neck” pour. I found it to be super delicious! Top 3 sherry I’ve ever tasted. It did seem to change noticeably as the level of the bottle went down but remained solidly top notch through out. Did I mention it was priced just right ? Great bottle.

The 18 is very hard to find. Pricey too. Hope you review that one. As far as the 12 it blew me away. Best 12 yr old sherry so far. Reviewers are really pushing the Edradour 12 as the best 12 yr sherry. Haven’t had it yet. It’s $92 locally while the Bunnahabhain is @$50. It’s almost twice the price ! I’ll probably pull the trigger on that one to see what all the fuss is about.

So refreshing to see someone that likes the latest expression for a change! Bunna is a favourite of mine but I haven't yet replaced my old 12s and 18s with the new looking bottles. Now I look forward to when that moment comes. Cheers! Evolution is not always bad :)

I tried some when I was still in Australia back in late 2015 in that older bottle, though I don't quite remember how it tasted all these years later... just polished off a bottle of the newer 12yo recently and it is one of my favourites. Absolutely love it!

Nice review guys. I'm going to get my first Bunnahabhain, the 2019 Feis Ile 2001 Sauternes finish bottling. I think the new master blender is bringing some big changes for this label, all a lot for the better.

Interesting (non) comparison. There seems to be indeed a lot of batch variation - in my bottle (purchased in late 2020) there is no balance between elements but an undebatable domination of dry sherry - roasted salted nuts and dark chocolate powder. I like it a lot.

I did this same head-to-head line-up with the Taipei Whisky Club earlier this year. We all enjoyed the older version just a smidge more than the new 12 year old. The older version had more of a deeper, more well-integrated profile (seemed to have more sherry casks that had held sherry for a while). The new one was much sweeter at the onset, but had a bit less complexity in the development and a green wood note at the finish. Both were good, but we all gravitated toward the older version just that little bit more. Nice to see others trying a similar comparison, though. Bonus points for inclusion of a cat in the review, too. Cheers!

Great review! Great whisky! The 12 is a modern classic. The 18 is more than double the price but another phenomenal dram! More heavy on the sherry than the 12. As this review stated the 12 is more complex and balanced...

Another tad bit of about this particular dram, the cost is rising at a substantial rate. I could get this one year ago for $ 59. It's now $ 64! $ 5 increase in 1 year! Better buy several now if you can find them! Cheers!

Thanks for reviewing Bunnahabhain 12 Now. Keep up the Great Transparency Quality. Don't mind the small old warehouse, building, ..whatever it is called, save $ on producing Excellent Great Transparency Quality Scotch whisky is what counted and mattered. Another example similar to a simple but delicious "Local" food stand. On sale special at $58 CAD. (£29), going to wrap a few now. Cheers.

Bunnahabhain have done some amazing things with NAS whisky of late. The Toiteach is great, and if you have the chance, get your hands on the Eirigh na Greine, which is funky in all the right ways.

Just cracked open a new bottle, and IMO, this is one of the best values in 12-year, rivaled by maybe the Glenmo 12yr Quinta Ruban... a must have for anyone's bar.

Got my bottle today, 6/5/20, and it is both the strongest and best I have tasted over the last 50 years. Time was when I thought JW Black was the epitome! But this Bunny leaves that drop gasping. I thought I wouldn't be able to handle the tongue burn. Wrong; no problem. And when you reached for the water I was saying NO no no! Your reason was good, though. A very good review.

Great review! I couldn't agree more about the Bunnahabhain 12; for an entry level whisky at its price-point it's outstanding. In the UK it regularly appears on sale at a high street supermarket for £30, which is ridiculous for the quality you're getting. If you can track them down Gordon and Macphail also do some excellent Bunnahabhains as part of their sadly discontinued Cask Strength Series.

Caol Ila does in fact make unpeated whisky, there have been a few different releases in recent years. (15, 17, 18, The Stitchell's Reserve... off the top of my head.) I am a fan. It's good stuff, worth tracking down. I've also had some really fantastic peated Bunnas. :)

I'll have to try and track one of those down. I'd love to taste what Coal Islay is like un-peated. Years ago I was able to sample an un-peated Bowmore, which was a very strange experience (though not an unpleasant one).
@jasoncoates1835
@jasoncoates1835 5 жыл бұрын
@@TheSingleMaltReview Oh, unpeated Bowmore sounds fascinating. I've certainly never seen that. The unpeated Caol Ilas have been part of Diageo's annual special release lineup, I'd hope some has made its way down to New Zealand. I'd gladly send a sample of the 18 if the logistics weren't so prohibitive.

I know it's not generally what you do, but I'd love to see you guys do a head-to-head comparison of this massively improved Bunnahabhain 12 with my other favorite "standard" 12 from Deanston. Both are superb and about the same price, but I can get the Bunnahabhain in a gift set with two glencarin glasses for the same price! Cheers!

Funny you mention, but we were pondering the idea of pitting two similar (in price or style) whiskys against each other in blind tastings to see what settles out. I thought it would be a good way of determining quality without the distraction of brand or history.

@@TheSingleMaltReview Anther opinion might be to have 3 similarly styeld & pedigreed, but differently priced whiskies to compare. Say three 43-46%, Sherry finished whiskies, or 3 cask strength peated malts, etc.; you get my point. Or perhaps each of you pick a your favorite bottle from a particular style and blind taste & compare. Cheers!

In a side by side, the newer label is lighter in color, more spirity, a bit sharper, and comes off younger. It’s still great whisky though I much prefer the previous label.

Interesting review. I have heard the opposite, the quality has slightly waned. I’ll have to grab myself a bottle and see for myself. Bunnahabhain are producing more peated malts these days. The annual Moine finishes being a particular highlight of the year for me. Last years Bordeaux finish was exquisite & the previous years PX has become a cult whisky. Slainte 🥃

As a new formulation, I would suspect the Bunnahabhain 12 is quite heavily batch dependent. So one year on it's very possible your bottle is quite different to ours.
