Earliest Nerf thing I can remember were the nerf swords with little shield targets on the wrist guard. Interesting to consider that nerf and super soaker redefined what toy guns could look like. They really shaped the esthetic of 90s toys. The colors and the high tech industrial curves, preparing for futuristic war.

As a kid of the 80's there's actually some tragic events that opened the market up for toy firearms that were so brightly colored and also so obviously not a real gun in design. The channel did cover it in depth but the short of it is that there were some accidental shootings of kids who were brandishing the then state of the art battery powered water guns made by Intertek. All models VERY convincing looking from not to far away. Very detailed and colored to look like a pulverized black coating. I owned three of their variants in the realistic color scheme. Then... Poof. They were gone off shelves. The hottest thing in neighborhood play combat was just gone. Thus we enter the Super Soaker and Nerf Gun 90's.Those two products filling a niche that had a big opening in it for some time.

What stinks is that we used to have those great super soakers that could hold quite a bit of water and shoot very far. Then Nerf bought up the rights and we haven't see. Any since then. I still have one of my original ones that I have used to get some hard to reach pigeons that keep crapping at one spot on out house. If I didn't have that super soaker idk what I would do to get rid of them nonleathaly.

Secret Galaxy continues to be educational as well as entertaining. I always thought that the bow & arrow was the only Nerf product I ever had (well, that and the "Nerf Arena Blast" video game.) But as it turns out, we also had a couple of those "Nerful" toys in the house, (I particularly remember the rabbit-looking one on the skateboard,) though I never knew what they were called or where they'd come from - I never would've imagined they were linked with Nerf. I own quite a few Nerf guns and I appreciate your commentary on how Nerf might affect the perception of guns as toys. I have to wonder how many adults who treat their guns like toys today may have grown up with Nerf as a gateway. @@TJ52359 Trigger discipline isn't really what I'm talking about. It's more about the lack of respect for the fact that they own a device designed for killing human beings. So many people I know who own guns seem to glorify them as if they're sports cars or video games or some other frivolous thing, when they're nowhere near the same. That is why American gun culture terrifies me. Many of the most enthusiastic fans don't have the maturity necessary for it.

@@TJ52359 I know some folks who handle gun ownership pretty well but I also know some that are very much part of modern "gun culture" where they get super into the hyper-consumerist side of things while also letting the gun community dictate their politics (even outside of gun related issues). The commenter above may need to "know better people" but that doesn't change that a good chunk of the gun community (at least in America, I have no experience with gun cultures outside of that) has become unhinged and have made firearms ownership their entire political, social, and personal identity.

I had a nerf gun growing up. It was one I remembered seeing commercials for on television, and to fire it you had to cock it like a shotgun, though it only fired one dart at a time. Also, am I the only one who finds it strange that's there's never been any kind of nerf cartoon or tv show? You would think they'd have made one during the 80's or 90's, but there was nothing. Even the early/mid 2000's would've been a sensible time for one. Heck, talk of a nerf feature film would probably make perfect sense at this point.

It's weird that what nerf IS has changed, (bars, balls, guns, game patches) but its meaning has basically stayed the same, making something dangerous safer. Think about it, won't you?

By the time nerf guns (ahem blasters) came out I was playing with real guns. And thanks for reminding me of nerfles, just another thing to look for on ebay

OMG, was that The Monkees? They were a HUGE influence on the Beatles. You can totally hear it.

I have a huge NERF arsenal, and on my birthday I used to rent out a bouncy castle emporium and invite all my friends for a giant all out NERF war. Good times. Now I'm old and decrepit. I should probably donate my arsenal to some kids...

Hasbro: Until all are guns!I actually currently have 4 nerf guns and about 200 bullet dart things. I say around, because even though I bought 200, I'm sure every time we play with the guns in our house, we lose at least 2 darts, might be down to 130, it's been a while since I bothered trying to count them. Definitely a great childhood memory, alongside Super Soakers. Might have to pick some of those up next. Wait. Can we still get Super Soakers these days?

I had the Nerf bow and arrow, the Nerf Vortex, the Nerf football, the Nerf Basketball, some version of the Nerf baseball that had a vinyl around it instead of foam and of course, the original Nerf ball.

Second video i have watched this month to mention Fred Cox and the Nerf football. Check out Jon Bois's history of the Minnesota Vikings and his waxing eloquent about the importance of the Nerf football to American culture.

When it comes to guns as toys, it's Nerf or . . .well, guns, actually.

I'm reminded of the nerf arms race i accidentally started with a former roommate. Once upon a time I found myself drunk, in a walmart at 3 am. And on a whim bought a nerf Maverick. After a week or so of pestering my roommate with it. He went and got one of the break apart rifle sets to fight back. On my next paycheck I went and got the Vulcan and proceeded to mow him down with belt fed foam fury.
