This has been one of my favorite interviews because the input from the VERY INTELLIGENT kids is so vital for today. You guys are helping other teens that feel alone, because of your publicity - they now have others to look to which gives them hope. This interview is THE DEFINITION of healthy, open and honest communication between family members. I am sooooo happy for you guys. (Sam Jr. you are incredibly intelligent and articulate) You all are destined for greatness. Next stop in a few years - Ayahuasca retreat in Costa Rica. Good luck and take care you guys. -Dane

@@annedodgson1530 you can get the same 'social and wholesome' families without religion. I've seen the damage the religion does, up close and personal, in scores of families, across multiple generations. That sweet countenance is programmed in with fear. It seems like a common issue in Mormon marriages that people feel like they have to leave their marriage rather than adjust the influence the church has on their life. ITS MADNESS!! I'm ashamed to admit that I've had similar thoughts (only very briefly). Better to be a good husband or father and a crappy Mormon than the other way around.

Young men's was more about "playing basketball" I'm from IF ... I finished that sentence for ya bud. You're absolutely right!! It's RIDICULOUS. I made that joke every week. It's not a joke ... It's true. Very sexist too in comparison to what we would have to do weekly as young women (bake bread, rake yards, sew clothing etc) LEAVING the church was the best decision I've ever made. I'm never going back and I'm super impressed with you and your family. You're all very intelligent and strong enough to move out of something insidious once you stumble upon the truth. It's freeing and it's the right thing, most members won't even ask questions. They are blind and too afraid to face reality. Listening to your stories has helped me to feel less alone, it's comforting to see that others share my experience within the church.

I am absolutely amazed by “the children”. Even if they are a lot older than they look, they set a gold standard for home schooling, of which I’m not usually a fan. I want to add they are credit to their parents, but honestly, at least some of this is innate and some, obviously, is the result of mature reading, research, pondering, and consistently seeking to self improve. Any organisation, secular, religious, or educational, should be thrilled to have them in its ranks.

It is very sad when children say “I was at the age when I feel the pressure from others to get a testimony...”
@cirillojoe
@cirillojoe 4 жыл бұрын
Children feel pressure in all things. It's human nature. We are all growing and repenting along the way. Everyone grows at their own pace and leaning on each other's testimony until we get our own. So I believe that the pressure comes when we start to compare ourselves with others. This is wrong. If we are going to compare we should compare ourselves with ourselves. Take notice of how much we have grown, what experiences we have gained along the way. As we depend on the Lord for what we are challenged with, He will make himself known to each one of us and therefore our testimonies grow from those experiences. Just imagine, when children are pressured at school, do you take them out of school or do you teach them how to deal with the pressure of growth? I hope that as parents, we can teach our children how to deal with the pressures of life. It's a process and I know that with Jesus all things are possible. God bless!

Sara is obviously a far better woman than I am or was. If I’d been her, in that same pressure cooker of too much stress, too many responsibilities, and not enough hours in the day, and my husband announced he was running for city council, I would have walked out, and had the divorce papers served publicly twice, once at church, and once at a council meeting! There’s a small amount of hyperbole there, but not a lot. Seriously though, it’s an amazing marriage. Even though they bowed to pressure to jump start their life, they’ve obviously worked at their relationship, and saw their love and family as worth that effort.

So if I stick my head in a hat and claim I've had divine intervention from God, can I start my own religion? I've had countless Elders come to my house and they have no REAL answers to my questions. Where in the bible does is say that we can become Gods? When I ask certain questions they always answer faith, or....its in the bible. If Jesus is who he says he is then why do I need a different Gospel created over 1,000 years later? Really think about it for a second.

The Internet: The place that religions go to in order to die. The LDS Church is right to fear ‘outside sources’; if it can’t control the messaging and interpretation, members may begin to form their own views of history and doctrine. As a humanist, I applaud that and call it a true education. Even the Bible understands this, hence the story of the Fruit of Knowledge of Good and Evil. I’d simply call it: The Fruit of Humanity.

Haha! I’m active LDS but what he said about sex positive reminded me of something. My mom recently “told on” my 14 year old son because he was masturbating. I literally laughed at her. I said, you show me a kid that doesn’t play with themselves, and I’ll show you a kid that doesn’t have arms. One of the things I think I’m learning as an LDS person is that many members falsely believe that salvation is through the church. That belief can break people. It can break their spirit because they have to measure up to a non-existent human that gives talks at conference. When you realize that salvation is only through Jesus Christ, all of a sudden it doesn’t matter if you have tattoos. It doesn’t matter if you have a cup of coffee to stay awake on a long drive. It doesn’t matter if a woman wears pants to church. It doesn’t matter if you say ass hole every once in awhile. Everyone has a different path, and as long as that path leads to Jesus Christ, it’s going to be OK.

Perhaps I didn't explain this well enough in the interview and in the disciplinary council. The LDS church has a specific definition for apostasy. The only two aspects of that definition that could remotely apply to me are 1) weakening faith and 2) opposing the church. I wanted to respond to these charges in the disciplinary council, but the church leaders weren't really interested. Anyway, this is my super condensed response: 1. Faith cannot be at odds with the truth (Alma 32:21), so I cannot weaken faith by sharing truth. 2. I am only opposing the church if the truth is opposed to the church. I am no more opposed to the current church than the church of yesteryear is opposed to the current church. My experience was just another example of the LDS church objecting to somebody sharing the truth. This wasn't about blaming the church for my apostasy. It was about shining a light on the fact that the church is opposed to the truth. I just want the church to stop lying and stop harming people.

I truly think it's very difficult to understand unless you've been born/raised inside of the church. When you feel you have a good heart full of love for God or even human beings/family. It is beyond difficult to know that someone inside of the church in a "high ranking" position deems you unworthy to even enter a church building or even have a relationship with God....that is a very difficult indoctrination to overcome.

1. Didn't really ever feel like this woman.. I've been married for 28 years.. converted when I was a teenager. I never felt like my husband had the final say - but maybe that was us.. and the women in our area definitely have a voice or make decisions because I'm in awe of what all of my friends accomplish and do.. and it's also how I grew up, too. Not because we are feminist (not).. but because I guess my husband trusts me and we have a mutual agreement in about 98% in raising kids, etc. My voice matters.. my emotions matter.. 2. Being bishop isn't an "epitome" of the Mormon experience or "validation" of doing Mormonism... It's interesting when people think it's a reward. It's not a reward.. it's a position of service and growth. But I have seen bishops (and their wives) who feel it's a reward and a status thing. It's not meant to be.. but maybe different areas have different cultures surrounding it? 3. Church doesn't come first. Family comes first. I was an Early Morning Seminary teacher. But family comes before work (of course - it's all a balance). Being on a city council, etc... wasn't really putting the family first. It seems like the pressures were perceptions. 4. I know LDS women in my area that own businesses (I do), work full time, have amazing careers, and achieve great things. If your culture defines Mormons as acting or being a certain way, then that's the culture -- not the Church. I respect that people have different experiences.. but it sounds like a culture issue.. my kids were the only LDS kids in their schools - went to other churches, studied other religions... (I grew up attending Catholic, Lutheran, Weslyan, etc etc etc.. and every summer went to Mennonite Bible school). My kids have always asked questions.. so I'm grateful my kids never felt like they couldn't ask questions and explore things on their own.

I have been watching this channel for a few months now because I find it very interesting; however, being a non-LDS person and being a non-denominational Christian, I don't understand the statements about going to the temple for the first time. Is this not where LDS members have been going to church their whole lives? It appears there are different buildings for going to church and going to the temple, correct? If that is true, it seems to be a waste of money and resources to have two separate churches for different occasions. My non-LDS thinking tells me it is a waste to have such a beautiful and large building that can only be used by a chosen few for limited times. I understand about the temple being sacred, but didn't Jesus tear down that veil that separated the elite from everyone else so everyone can enjoy the full extent of God's blessings and not just those who are allowed inside the temple. Maybe someone can explain this better that I have grasped it.

"Hearken" is not to blindly obey. Marriage is a partnership and should be treated as such. The church does not come first. Put God first and then family. Without God, family is nothing. If you're taking on more than you can handle, then just say no sometimes. No one says a mom has to stay home and school her children. A woman working outside the home is not a sin. Many people, no matter their beliefs, choose to do more than they should and end up wishing they would've spent more time with family. Maybe this man could've chosen family over other things at times. It's all about choice. If you choose to blame a church for your own actions, that's sad. Take responsibility for your own decisions. I had 3 kids. No one made me feel guilty for not having more children. EVERYONE in my ward celebrated my education and decision to have a career while I was still raising children. The church didn't abuse me. There are people in every group that are hard to deal with, but they are not God. They're human and are sometimes very, very wrong in the things they say and do. The gospel is the gospel whether you're there or not. It is literally here for the eternal life and happiness of man and woman. Many are called, but few are chosen ... because it is a difficult road. It is very easy to give up. I did. And I regret every single moment that I walked my own path. God can't guide you if you turn your back on Him. So please, stop blaming a church for your own life choices.

It's so easy to blame others. I could say it's my history of being abused that caused my actions. I still have a choice, and I own my mistakes. I'm also still angry with people who treated my children badly and taught them incorrect doctrine. Because I'm human too. But I don't blame the gospel for the things people did. My opinion and beliefs are not hurting anyone. I love my family more than anyone knows. I also have a gay son. And I love him so much. You think I'm gaslighting .... I know what it's like to live with that. And your opinion of me doesn't matter. I know my life and the abuse I went through had nothing to do with the gospel. It had everything to do with the choices of a man. I won't blame God for man's actions.

Pointing out that the Mormon church is a harmful and fraudulent organization started by an adulterous con man is not blaming others. I couldn’t be more proud of the fact that I, despite having been heavily indoctrinated from infancy and having everything to lose, I still eventually managed to escape. Most don’t. And some who don’t then go out of their way to poo-poo those who do. Can an FLDS woman “blame” Warren Jeffs for harm she suffered at his hand? Or should she recognize that she “always had a choice” when she was pressured into a polygamous marriage at the age of 9? I guess she’s got to accept responsibility for that, since it’s after the LDS-approved “age of accountability”, right? Abusers and their supporters always blame their victims.

I myself feel that my parents had children, not because they wanted them, but because everyone else was having them and it just seemed like the thing to do......because they sure as hell led hedonistic lives of self indulgence, ie., alcoholics, wife-swapping, etc. I never felt wanted in my family of birth.....so I am sensitive to hearing what these parents are saying so far.

Edgar Allen Poe married a 12 year old girl, but no one ever talks about that. Lewis Carroll dated little girls, no one ever talks about that. That was a normal occurrence back in the day and before that. There are some sources that said Mary was 14 when Joseph married her. No one talks about that. But it is all heaped on Joseph Smith... nothing new. Nothing new.

Nope. While there were young bride's in Joseph Smith's day, it was NOT a common occurrence. When it did happen, there was generally a small age gap, not a 23 year age gap as was the case between Joseph Smith and Helen Mar Kimball: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helen_Mar_Kimball. Lies, adultery, and spiritual manipulation are additional factors in play in Joseph Smith's case. Who cares what Edgar Allen Poe did? That's entirely irrelevant. Poe didn't claim to have the key to the world's salvation and exaltation, did he? Joseph Smith used his fraudulent claims of spiritual experiences to manipulate and exploit people, including a 14 year old girl.

These stories are brave yet very sad to me. This isn't 1890 so why don't the women know more about their own religion. Both of them really. There is the freedom of information act and channels, blogs, sites, etc. that will tell anyone about it. It shocks me that anyone can believe in this "church's" doctrine. I hope they can find happiness outside of their old world. Thank God this man didn't actually have to give birth. Do LDS missionaries serve missions to make themselves feel better about their beliefs - or is that kind of accusation only applicable to apostates? Do you have any comments on the substance of the problems with the church's truth claims that led to our apostasy? I.e. the disavowal of past doctrines, rampant dishonesty in the church, non-historicity of the Book of Mormon, Kinderhook Plates, Joseph Smith's secretive and manipulative polygamy and polyandry, the LDS church's fantastically racist past, etc.

@@sjpinson Ive been there Sam. I know the story, ok? if anyone knows it, it is me! I am a black, gay member of the Church who was a sex, food and meth addict for 20 years and was disciplined for that in the church.i went through the church councils and almost had my membership taken from me. I was an apostate for many years because of bitterness I had for the Church and I left the Church and it was the most bitter years of my life. I was a living wreck. In the very gall of bitterness with Satan's grasp around me justifying my perversions with an absolute hatred for the church. It's so funny that those who leave the church cant leave it alone. Let me repeat that: Its so funny that those who leave the Church cannot leave it alone. You made sacred covenants with the Lord in the holy temple as well as the host and you deliberately turned your back on those covenants. I did the same and I have felt the bitterness of hell for it as you and your counterparts will.
