it's the only movie I won't watch alone, it's different from scary movies, when you watch it..it feels like you might manifest something, there's few horror films that are made with actual quality and effort and they still aren't at this level, only The Shining comes close in terms of quality imo, this film basically made a list of everything horrifying and did it, even the medical procedure is scary, haha, I think it even took 4 people to play the little girl, it's really an achievement

Ellen Burstyn tells a great story about this. The following year, she was in Arizona filming "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore," and she and some of the other cast and crew decided to go see "The Exorcist" one night to unwind (!). A lady in the audience became overwhelmed and passed out, and several people gathered around her to try to help her -- including Ellen, at first, until it dawned on her that maybe this poor woman probably didn't want to come to and see a member of the "Exorcist" cast in the flesh right away! So she withdrew. (Might've been even worse if it had been Max Von Sydow, I suppose.)

God wouldn't allow him to die!! and he dies at almost 90 years or so.. if I am not mistaken.. so after seeing all of those stories.. and I struggle with my life and my dark thoughts..at some point in my life I wanted to kill myself.. but a very low silent voice.. but with a strong vibe said ''come to me, is time to surrender'' and I believe it from the deepest parts of my very soul.. it was Jesus... i cried out loud and beg him to show me what to do.. and he did.. in fact this very KZfaq that we started me and Joy is bcuz of that.. bcuz we almost fall apart.. and divorced.. but now we are working on this together and God blessed us beyond measure.. i will always honor his name.. i will believe in his son's sacrifice and I know now.. that everything in this world is no such thing as ''random'' everything has a purpose.. and at the end those who denied Jesus before men, he will deny them before the Father Matthew 10:33

I take it you were not able to read the book. In the book, the demon was vicious: he attacked not only Father Karras' faith, but he attacked his sexuality, as well. The demon also went after Mrs. McNeil's butler! These two aspects were never mentioned and never made it into the film.

Had you read the book, you would think differently. The demon (in the book) was non-stop vicious on Karras. It attacked not only his faith, but also his SEXUALITY. That aspect was never ever addressed in the film adaptation. Karras literally went through hell to save Regan.

My mom wouldn’t let us watch this so I borrowed the book from the library when I was 12-13. EXTREMELY frightening!

📽The great thing about Friedkin's style/ ability was his 'steadfast' mindset on realism. The major fault of nearly every horror film, dare I say, every film of today. I still hold/believe that the 70's was truly the golden-age of film. I mean, pound for pound, ...directors, writers, actors, score, film-editing and the birth of so many of today's categories due to the incredible/monumental innovations in the "arts & sciences". And your right, his gritty realism of "The French Connection" '71, was the same feel as "The Exorcist", disguised as a horror film. 📽How/Why did H'Wood ever forget that treating any genre, within the context of true-reality is what makes or breaks a film. That's why The Excorcist worked ...it felt real. Respect to the premise, story, characters, etc... Forget that it's horror, imagine what you do as being no different than The French Connection, an actual true subject. Hackman killed it and by the way, so did Jane Fonda that same year for "Klute". To this day, for me, the best-true honorings for best Actor/Actress ever. If you haven't seen Klute, Donald Sutherland being the movies namesake, put it on your immediate list. 📽Not a criticism, just a correction, ...Tatum O'neal won for best Supporting-Actress for '73 over Linda Blair. For years my brother and I thought it was a travesty how she beat out Blair. We thought it was because she starred with her father (Ryan) ...but then we saw "Paper Moon", by Peter Bogdanovich, another great of the time. As soon as the movies finished, my brother and I looked at one another and said ..."Ohhh, I get it now ...there was never a contest!"😲😏 📽That l'il girl stole that whole film from what was supposed to be her father's. If I understand correctly, he was even jealous of his own daughters fame overshadowing him. But he was a nasty, egotistical little fart in the first place. Bogdanovich had a particular fondness for B&W, in which the movie was filmed. @@MJoy4Fun Yeah, it's the kind of movie that you need to pay pretty close attention to or it might not seem like it makes sense. I also want to correct about the time span was between the first movie and the third one, it turns out to be 15 years. Well, I hope you don't get too traumatized by watching #3. The second movie takes place in the aftermath 5 years later in Regan's life, a lot of people don't seem to get it, I don't know why, I really had no problem understanding it, I believe the movies should be watched in order, but that's me.

His makeup was done by legendary special makeup artist, late Dick Smith. Smith also done makeup on Linda and her older stand in for those disturbing scenes. He and his team also created "fake" head of Linda Blair that rotates 360 degrees. Remember that effects created for this movie were practical not CGI
