Is an injured or stiff neck causing VM symptoms?

its just hard Matt to find out which one is causing which becasue vestibular specialists say the vestibular issues are creating neck issues. but neck specialist say that neck issues create vestibular issues . but it is definitely an interesting topic

Yes, I believe it is the main reason, or a contributing factor for some people.

I've had a stiff and wonky neck for years and am convinced it's at least exacerbating my VM symptoms and getting in the way of my brain fixing my faulty balance because my neck doesn't move 'smoothly' with the rest of my body so the vestibular exercises are difficult to do properly.

My neck was so bad! In VRT they worked on ju neck for a while & that really helped me out. & I was seeing a chiropractor & that also helped. I’m having all this symptoms again sort of a “relapse”. & my neck is so stiff these days! & oh wow! I’m definitely going to have my neck checked out again with a doctor. Thank you for sharing!

Yes defo get it checked. I need to resume some chiro now that the lockdown is ending in the UK. Even if it isnt causing my VM (I still think with me it's a wider central nervous system issue) my neck still needs treatment as it's a bugger.

I have added a link to my clinic, I have VM and currently having my C3 vertebrae in my neck treated, which includes brain stem desensitisation and gentle treatment. I have gone from daily dizziness and weekly bouts of severe vertigo/headache etc to barely any symptoms, I am not on a migraine prevention medication either. They never really helped me and the side effects were awful.

I had a multi level cervical fusion a few year's back when I mention my vestibular migraine symptoms ( no diagnosis yet) my GP is quick to dismiss it most frustrating as my symptoms usually start with a tightness in the neck and loss of range of movement .
@thebluntyorkshireman5161
@thebluntyorkshireman5161 Жыл бұрын
Really annoying, Pip in terms of your GP. But you like a lot of other people experience next problems and VM. I think there is a link (and it is one of the potential causes of VM).

I had for a few months what I thought were VM symptoms eg what you referred to as ‘de-realisation’, dizziness with a sensation of movement (in that sense resembling a mild vertigo), slight imbalance, heaviness in the head and also the whole body as you have a sinking feeling when standing straight. I did all the neuro and cardio tests and found nothing. I then had a quarantine in a hotel for seven days with a bad mattress that drastically exacerbated my stiff neck so I saw a orthopaedic doctor who told me to do an MRI which revealed that I have a disc prolapse in C3-6 to different degrees which could pinch different nerves that produce symptoms that match what I had. Looking back, I can envision all the symptoms I described as the results of a simple mechanism: my neck does not have the strength to carry the weight of my head.

Wow- that is really interesting, Ka. I think there is (for some people) there is defo a link between the neck and VM symptoms. Do you have to do neck strengthening exercises now?

@@thebluntyorkshireman5161 Hi yes, I go for physio for twice or even three times a week but I cannot say that it has fundamentally improved my symptoms. What it does though is to make the condition more comprehensible and in that sense give me a greater sense of security. Mine is an evolving situation and if I have any update I will share here.

@@thebluntyorkshireman5161 I need to give an update and hopefully clarify any doubt I might have sowed - I think I have PPPD ie persistent postural-perceptual dizziness- it sounds complicated but really it isn’t if one looks up the right resources - it is a newly recognised pathology hence almost no doctor I have seen has pointed it out to me but I now have found the right treatment finally and on my way to recovery!
