🔺 Our Mission 🔺
Founded in 1997 in Cedar City Utah, we are a 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to wildlife rescue, rehabilitation and education.
🔹Rescue, Rehabilitate and Release 🔹
The Southwest Wildlife Foundation of Utah (SWF) cares for more than 100 sick, injured and orphaned native wildlife annually. Restoring them to health and returning them to the wild is our primary goal.
🔹 Informing, Educating and Inspiring 🔹
The SWF provides over 100 educational programs reaching over 30,000 people annually. We believe providing educational outreach programs to schools, scout groups and community events, with focus on children and families, will make the greatest impact in preserving our wildlife, the environment, our public lands and our resources for future generations to enjoy.
🔹 Martin Tyner 🔹
Since age twelve, with a bird on his arm, Martin has captivated audiences sharing his knowledge and experience of his wildlife friends.
At age nineteen, Martin was hired as curator of birds of prey at Busch Gardens, CA. He also worked in the movie and television industry training big cats, elephants, primates, sea mammals and raptors.
“One of my greatest childhood fantasies was the desire to create a personal friendship with a wild eagle. I found myself with a love and fascination for these powerful creatures.”
Martin Tyner is a federally licensed falconer, eagle falconer, wildlife rehabilitator, wildlife propagator, and wildlife and environmental educator.
He has been providing wildlife and environmental programs throughout the western United States, to schools, scouts and community groups for over fifty years.
“Grandpa believed in a very simple philosophy; that a person should get up every morning and do good. Doing good means that you do well for others and doing well means that you do good for yourself. There is nothing wrong with doing well, but Grandpa always believed in doing good.”
Martin's book, Healer of Angels, reflects back on his life: from a young boy terrified of birds to becoming the first man in North America licensed to train a wild golden eagle in the ancient art of falconry.
Through a heartwarming collection of true stories he describes his challenging transformation from a shy dyslexic teenager, to the founder and CEO of the Southwest Wildlife Foundation.

Well, Old Timer I enjoy your videos and love the birds. In June of 22 I was diagnosed with Diabetes. I've lost 60 pounds since then and I'm on medication for it, and I feel better than I have in a long time, a very long time. I'm 72 and just retired 3 weeks ago. I've worked on aircraft officially since 1971, and just finished a 20 year stint with the USCG as a civil service aircraft mechanic. I felt the same way as you did, but my heart seems to be OK at this time. I watch you whenever I can.

Martin has told us many times that the falcons saved mankind being the early canaries in the coal mine to DDT contamination. Now, this baby falcon saved a lone man who, to many of us, is respected and loved. God bless Striker, and may his soul live on in the heavenly skies!

I am so pleased to hear that you are doing much better health-wise. The pain of losing a critter, is exactly the same as losing any family member, I lost my baby girl just after new year and know exactly that nearly a fortnight on I will never be able to replace her or any of the other friends that have left a tiny hole in my heart but I know that she won't be the last baby that needs me to take care of them, the same way that they take care of my tiny holes too. Both Boo and Striker will be with us always along with the many that we have both lost over the years. Take time to take care of yourself and your beautiful family and enjoy every day given with the amazing critters that make up this beautiful world . xx

Martin, you have led a very charmed life. I know your line of work has a lot of downs and heartbreak, but for you to be able to do what you do, and the fantastic creatures you work with is something that most can only dream of. You get to work with some of the most beautiful and incredible of Heavenly Father's birds. I wish I could have 1/4 of your experiences with these beautiful animals. I am a very soft-hearted man, I am what they call an empath, a Sigma male, like you. We recharge by being alone and being with nature and I can easily tell this by watching your videos. You too are an empath and a sigma male so for you to be able to work in the wilds of our world, and work to preserve and save the creatures we love so much, you are working in your dream job, and I wish I could do the same, but alas, I am far too old to be doing the things you do and did. we all get older and unfortunately must face the realities of aging and I could tell you were seriously ill from your climb that day and it is so great that you took the advice of your viewers and went to get checked, My father had a quadruple bypass surgery when he was 52, and before he finally died of a heart attack he had more than eleven serious heart attacks, the twelfth one took him from us, but that was many years later. Please take care of yourself, and I am happy to see that you are, but I must say it to you, so forgive me. I know you have Family that value you greatly and to lose you would be devastating to everyone who knows you especially your grandchildren. Do you best to be healthy, for sure, but please listen to your body when it tells you to rest, pushing yourself is a very bad idea. I am terribly saddened to hear you lost Striker, and I'm also happy to see you say that you will get another falcon. I love hawks, falcons, eagles, owls, and the lesser birds of prey as well. they are all incredibly beautiful animals, and they are Mother Nature's supercar, they are built for speed, except the owl, the owl is more of a bird equivalent of a Navy Seal, a special operator that is silent and deadly. I was wondering if you could comment if it is possible for a falconer to use an Owl, or is it not advised because of their nocturnal nature? Look forward to seeing many more videos from you and also seeing you take things a bit easier for yourself too.

First and foremost sir. I am glad to hear you decided to see a doctor. You remind me a lot of my stepfather who was stubborn and profred to tough things out too. I had a giggle when you said something was wrong you did not feel bad. My stepfather made the statement " Ya know.. it is amazing how much clearer I can think now that my brain is getting enough oxygen again" after he had a stint put in his neck for a blockage. As for Striker I was looking forward to an update as I had not watched much of your channel over the holidays as I should have. I know you are hurting over it as I have lost several good life friends with fur coats. It was a gut punch when you said the word "Unfortunately" as I had already felt the story going side ways once the second round of fights began. My condolences for the loss of your friend. May the new friend fill that void and heal the hurt as you begin making new memories on new adventures.

Just recently found your channel, when I was younger, I help a friend rehab young Hawks for release, teaching them how to hunt. Never owned a bird of prey, just couldn't afford it, so I just assisted when I could. My experience with my first heart attack was similar to your experience, especially after the surgery and having a stent implant. After I felt normal and full of energy, that was in 2000, since then I've experienced a total of 7 heart attacks, nearly died twice, have an ICD, Impulse Dynamic implants and many more stents. Next step is a heart transplant, however I keep fighting and continue to stay as busy as possible. As for bike riding, I suggest getting an eBike, having the assist will allow you to ride longer and further. It has helped improve my lifestyle. Good luck with your recovery, I've enjoyed watching your videos.

Just happened upon this video and wish to thank you for sharing your story with my condolences. Happy to hear your health has improved so much! For some strange reason I love birds of prey, especially owls & ospreys. Love hearing about your relationship with with these very special birds that include the truth of how their lives actually are in the wild … as well as the freedom you always offer them. Also love southern Utah is so spectacular … I used to work, live & ski up Alta in the 70’s and did lots of hiking and river trips in the summer … spent time around where you are and so loved it! All the best ❤ to you!

I have parrots and I really like Maxi Pionus parrots and I have had 4 of them in my life. Nerd and Ferd bird, Lurch, and Dobby. Ferd was Nerds wild caught brother and died a few years after I got them. Nerd and I mourned him and Nerd bonded to me and we were best buds who grew up together. He was skinny and had discolored feathers but I gave him feather vitamins and they grew in better and normal color for the rest of his life. I got them in 79 and Nerd and I were happy together for 31 years and he was a tank till age or something got him 31 years later, and he was probably at least 35 and I was 50 when he left me. It tore me up and he died sitting on my arm looking up at me through his closed eyes. My family felt bad for me and I was depressed so they found me Lurch, another Maxi for 300 bucks just before Christmas 09. He was a used Parrot who lost his old man owner and was mistreated by the leftover family who was scared of him. He bit the crap out of me the first night he was here as I was scratching him, just flipped his head around without warning and tore the skin off the back of my finger and I decided strangling him was a bad idea and went to patch myself up. After that it was get bit or attacked a lot till we slowly figured each other out and he slowly decided I was trustworthy and a friend. It took 5 years but he was finally happy and loved hanging out with me, i could tell by his happy soft eyes. A couple years later he escaped one day and I climbed two trees to rescue him, one about 30 feet up and touchedhim. A crow flew by and scared him into a much taller tree and he stayed there two days while I watched over him from the roof below him and he flew away. Nerd trusted me completely and I trusted him. He loved me and was quite happy with his lot in life, he almost never bit and was shy and timid around strangers, Lurch was large, talked, and wasn't afraid of anything, the polar opposite. Then the Lady who raised Dobby could no longer keep him and had followed my battle with Lurch and figured I'd be the perfect dad for him so she asked if I wanted him and we drove 6 hours there and back to Seattle to get him. He talks a bit, is the most well adjusted and outgoing Maxi I have ever known and refuses to bite. He's also part Beaver and chews anything he can get his beak on. He has chosen my sister as his beloved and I'm security and walnut provider. He doesn't hate me but only she is allowed to scratch him. 3 birds the exact same type but completely different souls who are different but similar at the same time. Nerd never talked, he spoke wild Pionus and I spoke it back, we understood each other perfectly. So I understand exactly what you're saying about the next bird won't be Striker, it will be it's own being with a different way of interacting with you but you'll work things out and become friends who understand each other. I'm sorry you lost him, it really tears a hole in your heart and you don't need anything else messing with it. It will be nice to work with the new bird and make each other get better with time and be interesting to see what kind of soul it will be 😍

That bear was your guardian who scared away any other predators thinking about making you lunch. If the bear was there to eat you it would have at the beginning. You still have work here on, Earth. 😉 The Good Work.

Oh, sorry to hear that Martin but you know just as every other falconer knows especially probably where you live. There’s a whole lot of predators in the sky. It’s too bad that you lost striker but I’m sure that you’ll you know carry on my friend.

Sorry for your loss. I’m familiar. My second to last bird was hit by a car. You mentioned that you prefer tiercel prairies to falcons. Can you please elaborate? I’ve only ever had one prairie/ peregrine hybrid and it was a tiercel. It was also completely psycho. Thanks

So Martin may not have gotten the falcon he would've chose. He did get the one he needed. Animals are awesome.
