If something is big, there is not many things that can destroy it from outside. I'm sure asteroid similar to one during dinosaurs is enough for something like the Empire, but these are rare.

IT can be penetrated, infiltrated, by Barbarians and that may be a factor. Of course inner deterioration (corruption, inmorality, etc.) starts the decay. The US has been decaying for not too many years from excesses; now it gets millions os illegal and Third World people and criminals, and that will complete the job, started by excesses and corrupt finance, judiciary, inner state, mediocre and corrupt politicians, etc. So its decay, pushed by commercial and unfair competition from China (slave labor and dumping) will take its toll.

It’s possible to not love these movies. Example I can point out how funny it is that we buy that this an empire that was on the tip of 3 continents an empire known for being proud of its diversity and reach is forever depicted as this world that has very few ppl who aren’t white . Rome always looks so boring Ancient Rome was vibrant and colorful even in its later years. It’s a political movie that’s more like a natzi propaganda film of using Rome to talk about the ideals of the ppl who made it rather than use it as a window to understanding what Rome was.

I'm struck, each time I watch this, by how much of "Gladiator" was borrowed from this film. But "Gladiator" made no attempt to address the chaotic aftermath of Commodus' death: Publius Helvius Pertinax ( 1 August 126 - 28 March 193) was Roman emperor for the first three months of 193. He succeeded Commodus to become the first emperor during the tumultuous Year of the Five Emperors.

This is one of the greatest epics ever made, which does not come as much of a surprise, considering the source (Edward Gibbon) and that Anthony Mann sat in the directors chair, the genius who we have to thank for EL CID and so many great James Stewart western including THE NAKED SPUR. A masterpiece, which still does not receive the praise it deserves.
@garykeenan8591
@garykeenan8591 2 жыл бұрын
The plot of the movie takes many liberties with history and can't be said to be based on Gibbon or any other history of Rome. Commodus was killed by a wrestler in his bath, for one thing. Marcus Aurelius did not try to sideline his son in succession to the imperial throne. On the contrary, he ignored the tradition of adopting a more qualified person for emperor in favor of his biological son. His daughter Lucilla was married to his adopted brother and co-emperor Lucius Varus who died in 169 CE, likely of the plague. She was then married to one of Marcus's advisors, not the "King of Armenia". Commodus was only 18 when his father died, not the 35 year old man Christopher Plummer portrays. He ruled for 16 years and would have only reached 34 at his death. Lucilla tried to have him killed in 182. The conspiracy failed and she was exiled and later killed. The character Cleander, a real person and head of the Praetorian Guard, was himself killed by order of Commodus during the food riots of 190. Commodus spent most of his time outside of Rome training as a gladiator and letting a group of advisors govern. He appeared in gladiatorial combat numerous times, a disgraceful display as gladiators were not held in high regard at all except a very few skilled ones. He was extremely fit, not the barefoot, decadent middle aged man Plummer portrays. But I do agree, this is a terrific film and one of the last great epic films, all done without computer graphics and digital editing.

08:50-12:10: A breath-taking scene. A lot of history in just a couple of minutes. I will try to break it down. 08:51 Marcus Aurelius: "Welcome, Mithridates. Welcome Petra." Fictional. However, there were at least 22 rulers of 8 Roman era states (Cius, Pontus, Parthia, Commagene, Media Atropatene, Bosporus, Armenia and Iberia) who carried the regnal name Mithridates. Of these 22 rulers, none lived during the reign of Marcus Aurelius. That said, the most famous of the aforementioned namesake was Mithridates VI Eupator. Mithridates VI Eupator (120-63 BC), dubbed as "Mithridates the Great", was the last rule of an independent Pontus. A formidable leader who created the ideology Mithridatism (= protection against poision), he was seen by his contemporaries as the last protector of Hellenic freedom. After his death, Pontus was incorporated into Rome. 09:12 Marcus Aurelius: "Greetings, Costobacus, king of the Omnia." Fictional. 09:29 Marcus Aurelius: "Serverus, proconsul of Judea." 09:44 Marcus Aurelius: "Africa." 09:55 Marcus Aurelius: "Marcellus, friend of Caesar." 10:15 Marcus Aurelius: "Virgilianus, proconsul of Syria." 10:42 Marcus Aurelius: "Pericles of Athens (Greek, Greek, Greek!)." Fictional. However, there was a Pericles of Athens who lived between 495 BC and 429 BC. Pericles, eventually acclaimed as "First Citizen of Athens, was a influential Greek politician and general in the times of the Persian wars. Altough the Roman Republic was already established in 509 BC, their are no known relations between him and Rome. 11:08 Marcus Aurelius: "Rome is honored, Sohamus, that Armenia's king is with us." Refers to Gaius Julius Sohaemus, King of Armenia for two reign (144-161 and 163-181) in a time where the Kingdom of Greater Armenia was indeed a client state of Rome. It was, however, never a Roman province, although Marcus Aurelius had tried many times. The second reign of Sohamus was the result of Lucius Verus himself, who offered him peace terms during the Roman-Parthian War. 11:52 Marcus Aurelius: "Welcome, Pertinax. Welcome, Britannia". Refers to Publius Helvius Pertinax (126-193), son of a freed slave who became an officer in the Roman Army, with a posting in Britannia. In the aftermath of the death of Commodus, he was crowned Caesar for three months during the Year of the Five Emperors.

I should have been more observant when the movie started and I missed the introduction; I was thinking during the cremation scene 'wasn't Julius Caesar stabbed to death on the way to the forum'? So of course on closer inspection I find the death of Marcus Aurelius is mentioned in the plot summary. As to why ancient Rome fell apart, perhaps a better saying to sum it up would be: 'An empire begins to die when it makes war on itself'; which if true is more exception than rule. A lot of countries that had civil wars did not collapse because of them.

'Gladiator' in 1992 shares the same fictionalized premise--Wicked selfish Commodus (or his supporters) kill his wise and peace-loving father and the chosen successor . GIven the success of several other ROman -era epics of that period, it was worth a try. The cast is certainly good.
