Indian sepoys cldnt get promoted, lived in outside barracks and were discriminated. New cartridges shipped from England was just one of the hundred reasons that made Mangal pandey fire the first shot. Marathas had been defeated by England in 1826 and since then an armed revolution by other indian rulers was imminent.

They find out about a drop box, they find someone is using that drop box and he has been involved in some other suspicious activities as well according to the local police. They are planning an attack of sorts, which Sri doesn't know is just about beef. When these guys are stopped, one of them pulls a gun and starts firing. I mean, what do you expect at this stage.
