I am a huge SW fan and a huge SW Expanded Universe fan. BDW (Before Disney Wars) the fandom had the ability to united while also respecting everyone's opinion and likes - some loved the SWEU, some hated it, some liked some of the SWEU, some liked the prequels, some hated them, some liked Ep1 but hated 2 and 3, a lot hated Ep1 but liked Ep3, etc. Everyone was, on the whole, fine with that and happy to find their own 'personalised canon' within the full collective official canon. Then it was announced Disney was taking over LF and was going to start releasing new SW films and content. Initially there was no news wrt the SWEU so a lot of fans like myself who loved at least parts of the SWEU were cautiously optimistic....until the announcement that they would be 'shelving' the SWEU, making them non canon 'Legends'. For some of us that was our 'SW is dead' heartbreaking moment. We were the minority but that had never been an issue before in the fd. Sadly ADW (After Disney Wars) for at least a period of time, in many fd spaces we were bullied/made to feel unwelcome, told that we were unreasonable even when we were asking that instead Disney make it a full on AU instead of 'un-canonising' it. Given that SWEU fans had been a significant part of keeping SW a viable and living brand, it felt that both Disney and the greater fd were tossing us out with no thanks or care. Most of the SWEU fans I knew still gave DW a chance, but for me it only took the first movie to know that whatever Disney Wars was it was not the SW I loved. Watching a large portion (if not majority) of the greater fandom year by year ever since slowly but surely start to come to that same conclusion has felt odd. I felt a discombobulating mix of validation and bitterness with a large amount of We-told-you-iteous. However, mostly I felt sad at seeing this thing I loved being eaten away at and watching the fandom I had so enjoyed being a part of seeming to fracture. The last year or two though it has felt like the fandom is starting to remember what it was a fandom of and finding its way again. There are still divisions but more and more it feels like that underlying unity and respect is coming back. This is of course only my personal experience and it may be that because I have for the most part stayed away from all things DW I have been experiencing it through a biased lens, but I think there is definitely a shift. I still don't hold out any hope that DW is or ever will be for me unfortunately and I have no idea what is going to happen with DW. And despite those 'dark side' emotions I have had over the years I do genuinely feel for all of the fans who have been having that heartbreaking 'SW is dead' moment in the ADW era. I know I felt a real and tangible grief and I am sorry so many others have too. I have still found a way to continue to enjoy ‘my SW’ through the BDW content and thankfully through fan movies, fan music scores, fan art, etc I still have ‘new’ TrEU SW content. Thank you to all the SW fan creators out there, they are making the ‘real’ SW that to me Disney Wars has never been.

my mom is a lifelong star wars and star trek fan. I get most of my sci phy nerdiness from her. She had my bedroom with the original sheets. She had every piece of the og memorabilia. For my mom star wars is her childhood. Since the last few disney made star wars movies she has not liked much of the newer stuff. She liked the mandalorian for a while but eventually she gave up. SHe watched all the Acolyte up to now. She calls me and ask "this isn't my star wars anymore is it son" i had to explain to her no its not. Really broke my heart. Luckily she still has her Godzilla but hearing the defeat in her voice. I wish those disney higher up really realized how much something like star wars means to people. Im not the biggest fan (mostly cause it was all around me growing up) but i started reading the graphic novels (the now uncannon ones) and those stories are amazing. So im searching in old comic book stores for those books to then send to my mom. She can still have the stories she loves, minus the disney taint on them.
