it's about cultural integrity for me - if Disney comes up with their own stories I don't mind, however, if they choose to adapt a Norwegian or German Fairy Tale it does bother me because they are exploiting my culture and don't even care to represent it accurately...
@uselessnobody41782 ай бұрын
I just don’t don’t care about cultural appropriation. I think art should be fair game to take and make your own.
@jukori2 ай бұрын
@@uselessnobody4178 it's a good point - Disney also failed to make ART with the remakes. they just copy-and-past the stuff without adding anything or reinventing it

@jukori I don’t disagree (although I didn’t mind the little mermaid). But the video isn’t really about the quality of the disney remakes but rather the question of if it’s wrong to race swap characters.

I don't understand why these people still make remakes when there's literally Once Upon A Time with had a lot of fairytale characters portrayed better than the original and given a better storyline

There is a line in Snow White where is saids “skin white as snow” and goes on about her being “the fairest of them all” so yes with Snow White it race does matter. Rapuzel has always been described as having long golden hair and being white and green eyed.
@uselessnobody41782 ай бұрын
See but these things don’t play into the plot. You can have a beautiful non white woman and it seems like it would work fine. If the “skin white as snow” line is the only thing that directly references her skin then that also seems like a trivial line to change. If there’s more than let me know but it seems to me like it isn’t a big deal. And yeah, those rapunzel characteristics aren’t important to the story. Lol

@@uselessnobody4178 ok fine do the same with tiana then. her race doesnt change the plot

@@AlyxAesthetics well in the original story the princess from the Princess and the frog was white too, so that’s another race swap. If you don’t believe me look it up on line. The only pictures of Tiana being black are from Disney or recent. I’m all for diversity but make original stories not race swapping characters to appeal to woke audiences. There are a lot of stories from India, Africa, china, Native America, Japan that they could tell but they don’t.

@@carabingham3207 I agree, I was just making a point that a reverse swap would be seen as bad but this isn’t
@user-pl3ov4vx3h2 ай бұрын
My problem is that the live actions have all been pretty bad. They add things to the script that actually ruin the message of the story and most of the time the singing is pretty bad. Also you can't get the characters to emote the same in a live action. It hinders the big comedic or emotional reactions from the characters that show you how they feel without having them say it. I just want Disney to go back to making good movies.
@uselessnobody41782 ай бұрын
Yeah, I’m explicitly just talking about whether or not race swapping is okay. The films themselves are another story. Lol

@@user-pl3ov4vx3h Some live actions are actually really good like the early ones which stayed true the original but still created their own story. They dont deserve the unnecessary hate they get espicially compared to the recent ones. I also disagree about the singing its pretty good too Btw raceswapping is stupid and lazy, they should just make original characters instead of ruining iconic characters
@user-pl3ov4vx3h2 ай бұрын
@@Rachet87-yp7qq Why does it bother you so much? All Disney stories are just a reimagining of other stories. Cinderella alone has been made so many times in so many different ways by people other than Disney and when the movie is done well race swapping didn’t matter. I honestly would rather the liveactions be a reimagining of the fairytales in a new way rather than try to copy the animated versions because they just can’t live up to the comparison. If anything is lazy it’s the copy and paste of the stories and songs from animated to “live action”. I would love it if they tried a shocking concept and wrote a new script and new songs, then there wouldn’t even be anyone comparing because it would be separate from the animated version.

To me as a mixed race woman I dont find these recasts as special it feels like pity. Like Disney is doing us a favor by remaking the same European fairytales with POC characters. Like if you want to represent a race cool great but then represent the culture! I thought it would have been so cool to see the little mermaid through the lens of Caribbean or African culture. Think about how cool Atlantis would look and all the interesting costumes and creature's we missed out on. But no Disney is fine to just give us their leftovers with a bit of spice on top and say they are "representing."
@uselessnobody41782 ай бұрын
I’d personally like to start moving away from movies starring minorities needing to “represent the culture.” Halle Bailey was just a really good pick and the little mermaid remake wasn’t about African culture. I don’t think should have been changed just because a black person has been cast. But yeah, it would be cool to see an African or Caribbean princess at some point.
@tehilagrunebaum-lake69822 ай бұрын
@uselessnobody4178 I agree Halle Bailey was an incredible singer and a good pick for the role. My point is why are we using POC actors to remake movies? When we can spend the time and effort making more original stories I loved Princess and the Frog, it was not a perfect movie not at all but I adored Tiana. Im not African American, nor am I from New Orleans but when I watched the film I admired Tianas hardworking attitude and I loved the setting of the film it was so different and interesting and it showed me a glimpse of a culture that I have never experienced. I find that so much cooler. I want to see other worlds new and new characters. These remakes are just poor imitations of their original counterparts and in my opinion are often a waste of the talent they cast.

Look the casting for Ariel was fine because she's a fish. It doesn't matter her race, but for Tangled it matters. Story of Rapunzel is a German fairy tale, so she would be a white woman and the whole story revolves around her golden naturally blonde hair. Can we stop diversity casting just for the sake of it?. I feel like people would feel the same way if princess Tiana was a white woman or Jasmine became Italian all of a sudden.
@uselessnobody41782 ай бұрын
Indian people can be blonde. I also don’t care about cultural appropriation or whatever. Stories should be open to taking and doing whatever we want with them. Film history is full of minority roles being played by white people. We should just let artists make art and then judge it on whether or not its good.

I'm noticing a pattern of different excuses for the same thing. A poc gets cast as ariel. Everyone went on about how ariel couldn't possibly be black because it doesn't make sense biologically (i dont care to explain why this is stupidbut she's a mermaid ffs). Now we can't argue that for Rapunzel, so they're scraping for any other excuse to be racist. I dont know if i trust Disney's intentions in this. I can't help but feel like Disney's been casting poc women and not standing behind them or supporting/ advocating for them. Part of me wonders if they cast these women in these movies just to put them in the line of fire. It causes controversy, which is publicity. They need to do the right thing and stand by their actors and actresses.

To be honest, I think the only thing Disney should do is make better films. A good movie will shut everybody up. Idk if its smart to stoke the flames of the detractors.

My problem is Snow White is not Rachel, my problem is with the seven dwarfs. Most of them aren't even dwarfs they just look like regular sized people. You can't have Snow, White and the seven dwarfs without seven dwarfs! It's not Snow White and the seven regular sized humans!
@uselessnobody41782 ай бұрын
I have no idea what’s going on with this movie. Some set photos look like they’re using regular people but other images it looks like the dwarves are going to be cgi. Haven’t looked too deeply into what exactly they’re doing though. Lol

I’m sorry, but it’s never that serious like who cares if Rapunzel is Indian like if anything it makes more sense because they are known for their beautiful long hair… I don’t care what anyone says you are racist if you are genuinely mad about this . It literally changes nothing about the story . The only one that I can understand is snow White because of the fact the whole fair as snow and her name being snow white , and it’s not a bad thing to represent a princess who is white lol and it’s not like she’s American white 😂 She could have been Hispanic, but they could’ve chosen someone paler atleast (as a hispanic)
