Welcome to Atop the Fourth Wall, where bad comics burn. In this episode, Linkara takes a look at the origins of the Fantastic Four!

ORIGINAL INFO: Secret Origins Month continues with the Fantastic Four! Marvel at how they use their powers to cause as much damage to people and property around them!
RUMINATIONS: So if I was so overwhelmed from the Entity finale, why exactly did I start up a new storyline RIGHT afterwards? Two reasons, one less important, one moreso.
The first, less important reason, is that any time you have something that might attract newcomers to the show with the topic, stuff like, say, Batman or Transformers or, in this case, Pokemon, something that gets the attention of people who wouldn’t normally watch the show, you want to give them incentive to come back. If they liked the review and storyline stuff already, why not give them a bit more? It’s the same as the momentum gained by the Mechakara finale from a few years back - keep that energy going and keep bringing people back. You’d think this would be a bigger reason, but of course there’s no guarantee people will actually give a crap about the storyline stuff.
The second and more important reason is that I hadn’t ended a storyline before February before. Sure, there were only the two, but it had established a pattern. And I still wanted SOMETHING to have for a double feature when the time came, thus I needed to come up with something. “His Blue Soul” was the result, at first supposedly hinting at Mechakara’s return, but referring more to Pollo in reality. I couldn’t stretch the storyline too long, since there wasn’t much to it, but it would be enough to fill in the intervening months between Halloween and the proper storyline finale. And once I knew what the storyline would be about, certain pieces NEEDED to fall into place - stuff like the new Pollo body going up to Comicron One, the stuff that happened in the Star Trek II reviews… it all made sense in that regard, taxing as it may have been on me.
The explanation for Mechakara’s supposed return here, while it turns out to be false in regards to THIS instance… was actually also a DIFFERENT subtle hinting. To Boldly Flee was in the advance stages of planning at this point and it had been decided Mechakara would be in it, so I needed SOME explanation of how he had come back to life after the Power Rangers Zeo #1. As such, I decided on the fakeout of the main storyline, but that indeed Linkara’s speculation about the magic coin granting him new abilities would be true. In this case, he had survived the battle (minus one hand) and had instead gone off and followed the Critics during the events of Suburban Knights, claiming Malachite’s Hand in the end and leading us to To Boldly Flee.

Does anyone else think the comic's opening would've been better if the Fantastic Four were summoned by Reed Richards to stop the nuclear missile instead of the nuclear missile being launched against them because of their completely stupid and reckless behavior? It definitely would've excused their complete urgency and disregard for human safety.

It's a good song, it's just horribly mismatched for an exciting superhero cartoon. It sounds more like the tune was written for a cartoon about a kids' sports team that was canceled during development and they rewrote the lyrics to make it be about the Fantastic Four because they'd already paid for it.

Linkara, did you know that the fantastic four's original powers were different. In the original concept, once sue became invisible, she had to, I kid you not, wear a replica face over her face,the thing was the same, though the script never said anything about him being orange, Johny could only"flame on" for five minutes and then wait another five minutes in order to "flame on" again, and reed could only stretch a limit until he started to feel pain. Yikes, pretty wierd if you ask me. Could you review ultimatum requiem ff or xmen, they don't seem that good and a really bad way to end those series.

There are two interrelated reasons I personally count this rather than Namor and the other Golden Age heroes as the start of the Marvel Universe: First is the earth of superhero stories in the fifties, which opened the door for reason 2. That being that this is where Stan Lee’s vision of what a superhero story could be (that “feet of clay” stuff) was given the chance to really take off. Granted this still ignores Dr. Droom/Druid, but no one really cares about him anyway (still hoping he shows up in a future Dr. Strange movie and doesn’t get shafted like Brother Voodoo did).

Well, we can blame the current events. - the impatience is based on how we should beat the Russians at space race. - the stories' elements was kind of original back in the day (No Secret Identity, quarrels, and monster as hero). - and 1960's sexism.

I'm almost 100% sure that Reed Richards is a high functioning autistic. Like that would explain a lot of his mannerisms and the fact that he comes of as ignorant to everything except for the task he's working on. I think it'd be pretty cool if marvel went in that direction.

I have 2 theories about why the FF are the “start” of Marvel. 1). After the Golden Age, Timely/Atlas/Marvel stopped doing superhero stories, and when the Silver Age hit they were more interested in new characters rather than reviving old ones. Contrast that to DC, where Superman, Batman & Robin, and Wonder Woman never left publication, and most of their big Silver Age heroes were reboots of Golden Age Ones (Flash, Green Lantern, Green Arrow, etc.) 2). The FF were the start of Stan Lee getting to shape the Marvel Universe according to his own vision (with some help from Jack Kirby and a few others), I.e. very “human” and flawed heroes.

As crazy as this origin story was, I like it. Just like with the X-Men, this was the team's pilot episode and they would definitely get better with time. Hopefully, the Fantastic Four will get movies that do them justice in the future. As for the F4's mission? I think, in the original version, it was to land on Earth's moon and win the space race. Heck, there's a story arc currently going on, called "Point of Origin," that retcons the mission into trying to land on an extrasolar planet. Possibly to see if it could be colonized...
@Redshirt214

Linkara, I should just point out the ANG used to fly both the F-106 and F-102 interceptor jets, and these aircraft often carried the AIM-26 Nuclear Missiles and also AIR-2 Genie Nuclear rockets to shoot down Soviet bombers. In those days, heatseeking missiles were kinda in their infancy, so to ensure that jets charged with the mission of shooting down Soviet bombers would get a hit, these early missiles had nuclear warheads on them. That way, even if the missiles didn't directly hit a bomber, they'd blow them out of the sky. It should also be noted early heatseeking missiles sometimes got fooled by the sun, or the heat from ground! So maybe the nuclear tip wasn't such a hot idea... but it was standard practice back in the day.

Fun fact; the Fanastuc Four were created because of a midlife crisis. By 1961, Stan Lee was 40 years old and he’d been writing the kind of Silver Age fluff common in the 50’s. Dumb, braindead comics aimed solely at children and he felt unfulfilled and like he was wasting his talents. He wanted to quiet but had a wife and daughter to support so he sat down and had a heart to heart with his wife Joan. He poured his heart out and her response was basically “fuck it, make a more adult themed book. You already want to quit so that’s the worst you could do.” Thankfully for Lee, he was already chief editor at Marvel so he quickly got it through to the ceo who approved it and released this book as his final Hail Mary. Of course, it exploded.

Impacts can cause retina damage, one of mine was almost detached (which would cause blindness) by the impact of a plastic bottle with a small amount of water in it being thrown at me.

Oh, so this IS Linkara's official channel. Amazing. Can anyone tell me if there is some playlist that goes in chronological order? Or just a video with compilation of his plot segments?
@AT4W
@AT4W 9 жыл бұрын
Other people have put together plot compilation videos on youtube if you'd like to search for them (usually going by storyline, which you can also find in written form here: at4wplotguide.tumblr.com), otherwise there is a playlist of all AT4W episodes in order on the channel... although it's a bit behind since I've been kind of busy and haven't had a chance to add stuff to it for a while. ^^;

Yeah they were meant to be flawed individuals in an age where most other heros in both Marvel and DC were self inserts which is the main reason they were so popular for so long. They were the first Heros who felt like actual people with real emotions as opposed to the cookie cutter adventures of Captain America, Wonder Woman, Flash, Batman, and Superman. This led to the creation of many more flawed individuals in Marvels lineup most notably Spiderman. The problem is nowadays writers oftentimes forget that we are still supposed to like them (especially Reed) and they let their flaws overshadow everything else about them. This has been a problem Marvel as a whole has had for a very long time.

In was just announced by Kevin Feige that the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot will be set in an alternate 1960s. I kind of have mixed feelings about that. I mean I know we’re in the Multiverse Saga but I just always imagined they were native to the Sacred Timeline. I’m guessing maybe they are going to relocate but well I can’t see into the future.

3:07 And what even better way of celebrating it than to create a movie that represents the OPPOSITE of what Fantastic Four is meant to be about(!) Seriously, Fox, just give the rights back to Marvel already. You've continuously proven how much you understand these characters, i.e. sod all. And I'm saying this even though I'm not a huge FF fan!
