Cutting brush to run the fence line. Replacing one of the basement sump pumps. Lots of rain. Cleaning the chicken coop, one of my least favorite things to do. Farmhouse cooking.

I enjoyed the chickens update. My egg lady dropped off 3 dozen brown eggs. I took a half a dozen and made some egg noodles. I had a nice huge beef roast in the oven and my nephew and two friends walked in. Inside, I burst out laughing.... talk about timing. So they had beef n noodles with buttered rolls. They visited and watched some movies and are in their playing games on the tv. He came home from college and brought two friends with him who couldn't get back home. I told them "thank you". and they said "what for?" I said you all went back for seconds and that's the best compliment you can get. Three 22 year olds finished off the entire pan. You will benefit bigtime by having cows. Meat is expensive unless you watch the sales. One store had boneless english roasts $7 a lb and it was buy one get one free. I loaded up because that's my favorite cut of roast. Always so tender and falls apart. I can't wait to see your cows. Watching them graze is so relaxing. enjoy your weekend.

Thank you, this is a great comment. I enjoyed reading it. I had to look up what a boneless English roast was. Here it is called a chuck roast. One of my most very favorite. Chuck steaks as well. They have more flavor than a ribeye.

I’ve always known that hoe you use as a hula hoe. I have my father-in-law’s and like you it’s a dream in the garden. A few years ago I found a small short handled one and I thought I’d died a gone to heaven as it’s so great for in my flower beds. Looking forward to seeing your finished greenhouse when it happens. I worked in a greenhouse for quite a few years before my first back surgery and I do miss the beauty of a full growing greenhouse. Being a master gardener it’s always been my passion to grow fruits and vegetables not to mention flowers. I would like to see more backyard gardens growing as it is some of the most sustainable living not to mention good eating! We are getting so much rain I can barely get my yard work done but if we didn’t have rain we’d complain about that too I suppose. Also looking forward to cows in the pasture. I guess I live vicariously through the KZfaqrs I watch!!!:):):)

Joe, doing the chicken coop made me laugh remembering doing ours and the hogs, cows and horses and always having, “help” from the animals. If not them checking out the wheelbarrow to trying to get hold of the fork or just walking around where you need to go. You’re smart enough to keep them locked in, us not so much. Down here in Minnetonka we’ve been getting drenched and everyone is complaining. Me, nope because it won’t help. Love how everything is turning out!

I can definitely tell that all the hens are much happier now not getting their backs all torn up all the time by the different roosters!!! We did have one hen that had 7 babies this year and hopefully they all will make it this year!!! @NorthernSeclusionАй бұрын
Yes but like I said, in the winter, it is all frozen and I cant get it out. Usually I would have done it earlier in the spring but there were other projects more pressing for time. Doing it more often does not help with the smell, it just shortens the time you are in there smelling it. A chicken coop really is not all that stinky until you start scraping it all up to remove it.
@dee1959fulАй бұрын
HelloJoe, in regards to the chickens house, have you thought about putting down linoleum after cleaning. Then add the straw.

Hey Joe, I follow a channel called fy nyth she put out a video “cleaning out the chicken barn in over a year”. I’m telling you about it because her coop lasted 14 months without the strong smell. She basically used pine shavings, some hay or straw and she tossed about some fresh herbs to help with bugs and mites. She was only cleaning it out due to the amount of dust that was building. Anyways just thought it would help you maybe you wouldn’t have to deal with the smell next time.

how many pasture acres do you have that are truly edible/sustainable? If you have a cow/calf pair and that is it a handful of acres would be all you need so rotational grazing for 2 is probably not needed especially supplementing with Grain/Hay. It is not the water seeping in the basement, the reason we need to pump in the spring is because that is where the actual water table is right now. until all the ditches and swamps in the area drain down into the St. Louis river, that pump will keep running. Dumping 15 gallons out on the ground so it can slowly seep down, is just a tiny problem compared to what needs to happen for it to dry up, which is... Time.

7 inches of rain this month, almost 17 inches this year so far. That is where the water table is right now. Like every year, it will go down.
