In qualifying for the 2017 24 Hours of Le Mans, Toyota's Kamui Kobayashi smashed the previous lap record with his extraordinary pole position lap. I was on commentary duties for Eurosport at the time, and it was my great pleasure to find myself describing one of the most sensational laps I have ever witnessed. I hope you enjoy this one:)

@@jbhaltjbhalt8397 BoP when done right, can be fucking awesome since the strengths and weakness of cars can be very diverse but achieve almost identical lap times on a good track. Until this year, I thought IMSA had done an absolutely fantastic job. The ACO and WECs heavy success tweaks though really feel like too much and have led to some ludicrous sandbagging in GTE, especially at Le Mans in recent years. SRO seems to also have a pretty good BoP formula since Bathurst is always a banger.

@@willlasdf123 i know but im talking mainly about the drivers, f1 drivers usually dont risk overtaking unless its completely safe or on a straight, i havent seen a lot of WEC but the ones i have seen were incredible, there was a lot more things to watch, i like f1 especially at the start of the race but other than that it does get a bit boring imo, but everyone knows f1 got a lot worse without the screams of the v8 and v10s

@@revantha247 Tchnology certainly does add to speed. I visited the Unser Museum recently while on vacation in Albuquerque New Mexico. The have a display of a model used for wind tunnel tests of the Penske car that little Al used to win the Indianapolis 500. They call it the million dollar model. The movie made a farce out of wind tunnels using ribbons instead but on the actual car. Between 1955 and 1965 there were dozens of drivers killed. In the mid 60s I believe they started focusing on making the cars safer for drivers (and spectators I might add). Where are you located? I am near Toronto Canada.

Le Mans is amazing. Seeing the on board shots, especially at night is jaw dropping. Watching an IndyCar turn in at Indianapolis Motor Speedway 380 kph / 240 mph is always a rush. Back to Le Mans, if they would have left the Mulsanne straight as was (no chicanes) the P1's would probably be breaking the sound barrier (joking) by now. Ir F, I totally agree with you on the cornering speeds, just crushing G loads. Drivers all over the planet make it look a lot easier that it actually is. ;)

LMP1s don't really struggle to reach their top end *with* the chicanes.. honestly they're a perfectly good idea. What's so interesting about a car just going perfectly straight for almost an entire minute, especially when modern LMP1s have/had such ridiculous power-to-weight ratios and just blitz out of corners before you realize they're turning at all?
