The tragic flight events of N515GK were recreated with the National Transportation Safety Board Preliminary Report (ERA23FA024) to help understand what went wrong on October 18, 2022. At the time of publishing this video, the cause(s) leading to the loss of control of this airplane are unknown. With Pireps and Airmets reporting moderate icing in the area, airframe icing is a strong candidate for this accident.

The PIC was my friend. He was a great instructor, pilot, musician and person. We'd always talk about flying together when he visited SoCal so I could show him around...sad I never got to fly with him. Every time I fly and see a King Air, I think of him. May he RIP.

@@TheFlightLevel Thank you! I appreciate your kind words. To be honest, flying is by far the most enjoyable activity I do, but I am always reminded that it can be over "just like that" - I cherish my moments with family, especially with my wife and kids and before I go up, always tell them I love them. Thanks for putting this together.

I got to fly a few times with him at the start of my flight training. He was a great instructor and a very nice person to be around. On that day I was on my way to work. I live about 20 mi south of the airport. It was a foggy morning with large supercool droplets. I had ice freeze on my car while driving through them. I am sorry for your loss of a good friend.

God rest their souls and bless their families! Just goes to show how many things have to go right to fly and how quickly things can go wrong and cause a tragedy. This is a testament to the quality of the flight crews, mechanics and controllers that provide a very safe mean of travel day in and day out, thank you all for your service to air travel!

Great video! Very sad and unfortunate. Even though we may never know for sure what went wrong, it’s important to investigate these events. Icing is so unpredictable and can sneak up on you. Thanks again for recreating and dissecting. I really enjoy all of your videos!

Thanks for the visit! This accident happened in less than a minute without any reported problems and is just so hard to comprehend. If icing was not part of the cause, hopefully the final NTSB report will give solid insight into the central flight failure.

No way!!!! I love this! Ok first part the narration is awesome!pls you have a good voice over. I love being able to listen to these stories while I do things around my house. Can we just appreciate the video quality & how realistic the plane looks! Everything about this video is amazing!! Last, Ty for sharing the stories of these pilots & flight crew/families. It's easy for us to forget the horror these hero's & innocent lives go through but today and past days you share their memory. God be with them all 😢💯 🙏🏼✈️

These t-tail airplanes are very susceptible to stall. Pilots don't get any stall warning.. Because the stall device is on the main wing. So the tail accretes ice and disturbs the air flow and stalls.. The force keeping the tail down and the nose up goes. On approach, no one will recover.
@TheFlightLevel
@TheFlightLevel Жыл бұрын
Hi and thanks for taking the time to comment. I was going to include a segment on the types of stalls but the section got too detailed for the average viewer. You are absolutely correct and if I had to guess the reason, I’d put my money on a tail stall. There are not very many seconds between the time when the tail begins to stall, then the nose dives and just not enough altitude to recover. Blue skies!

@@TheFlightLevel there is an old faa video on tail stalls.. I'm sure it's on KZfaq. Anyone who flies ga in icing conditions should looks for it... Could be a life saver. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hKiIa5eTq5jIZIk.html

The accident aircraft is an E90, it is not a T-tail aircraft.
@TheFlightLevel
@TheFlightLevel Жыл бұрын
@@Tom854 Thanks for the visit! Yes, a good E90 model is not available in the simulator at this time so I had to use the 350i. That was as close to the King Air model as possible. Great observation. Blue skies!

If you do get a tailplane stall, it can be very hard to do the opposite with the yoke (pull back), because every stall in training is a wing stall, which is yoke forward. If they had too much ice on the tail, and the aircraft began to stall , your natural reaction would be to pull back.

I wonder if the pilot slowed down just a bit perhaps being concerned of the vehicle on the runway chasing wildlife and also like you suggest , icing occurring on approach that caught them off guard . Very sad for the families indeed .
@TheFlightLevel
@TheFlightLevel Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your thoughts! If ice was the problem, I can only imagine the pilots were unaware of significant ice accretion and as such airspeed would be very critical on the final approach. An increasing angle of attack would have occurred before a stall as a warning sign also if all systems were operating correctly. So close to landing when everything seemed fine. Hopefully, the final report will shed more light!

Could be icing if they were too slow but the KA is an absolute beast in icing conditions. Another thing that comes to mind is some sort of flight control problem.

Conditions might have accumulated small amount of ice, but not enuf to pop the boots on approach? And what about elevator electric trim getting stuck and steadily rolling too much trim and stalling and down low and slow. Maybe ice in flap track, on one side more than other side. RIP and comfort for families and friends.

Good catch! The sim doesn’t have a good E-90 at this time and the 350i had to fill the spot. Thanks for the visit!

@@Namratiug Bingo. Non-pilots just LOVE to cling to that "radio...emergency...MAYDAY...BS" NO ONE on the ground is going to assist JACK SQUAT when the feces impinges upon the blades. The microphone does nothing for you. Only those interested in determining what happened. Tail ice is a very likely scenario. Sucks.
