It's one of those things. I'm 42 and still have issues with phone calls and stuff like that. Face to face is ok. Talking to someone over the phone or online, especially with the person I don't know, not that easy. It doesn't get easier with age. It's still pretty much the same as always. So don't feel bad about yourself.

How good is that feeling the moment you finish the call and say "Kewl...all good" - the heart sinks from beating out through your Eardrums to where it belongs...and you feel like you can walk on air! Until the next call of course....Urrghhh,...

I bet there is a culture somewhere in the world where that is normal. Even going to the West Country and ordering a coffee or buying a newspaper and the barista or newsagent will open with "oright moi luvver" and as someone from a more stoical part of the English speaking world one thinks "I'm your lover now am I? Blimey, that was fast! We've only just met!" Why not? We routinely hear "have a nice day" from strangers, why not "I love you"? It's only weird because no one else is doing it and if everyone was doing it no one would think it's weird.

@@theunderdog9353 It's more like overthinking what would happen. Either expecting the person you are talking to to start laughing at you because you're always stuttering and not able to find the words. You repeat yourself and can't speak up as if someone was holding your throat. You notice details on the other person's voice or face that aren't really there, but it makes you think like they're thinking to themselves:„Wow, why am I speaking with this clown?” It's all about trust, I may not have a lot of friends, but when I'm with them, I feel refreshed, to be finally able to talk about life, what I've learned or my interests. And knowing full well that these other people feel the same. Trapped in a cage of fear. Have a nice day.
@werewindwolf

This is pretty much how these things go down for me too. I'm fairly good at pretending to be talkative and relaxed, but I'm really not, and I'm often nervous for a long time in advance when stuff like a phone call is supposed to happen. Then my nervousness jumpstarts when I hear the phone ring, I do my best to cover it up during the call, and then it takes some time for me to reflect and get over the whole thing.

I know a couple tricks that might help, but you really don't want the first three. 1. Be so depressed you don't care about your own mental health. This requires a much deeper depression than merely not caring about your own physical health, strangely enough. 2. Hate yourself so much that you believe you deserve this as punishment. 3. Psychosis. If the you that is having the call has only some continuity with past you and none whatsoever with future you, then future you will be fine. Get in the habit of making notes though, because you will rarely remember anything from those calls. 4. Don't own a phone. Having to explain you don't own a phone repeatedly to everyone is also exhausting, but it is better than getting calls!

Having worked in a small family business dealing with all the bookings, answering and making calls multiple times a day nearly every day for years, definitely helped me heaps with this issue. @@thememaster7 I think it can be part phobia. Sometimes there isn't a logical reason. I think everyone has a measure of it, it's just more pronounced in others. @TimTheH
@TimTheH Жыл бұрын
@@thememaster7 Maybe a bit... I'm in a similar situation as @GreatOneSquidly but for me personally it also depends on whether or not I know the people. It's less proponent with family, friends and coworkers. I abhor having to make calls to people I don't know, especially new potential customers. Not so much worrying on how I'll sound, but rather to disappoint them in not being able to help them or knowing the answer to their question(s). It's the uncertainty of everything really. Also on how they'll sound. Will the person on the other line be in a good mood or just had some bad news or is annoyed by something, ... 3 different possible conversations with the same person allready. And you cannot anticipate nor react later (as you would in an E-mail) so your reaction has to be on point. Just like Adam in the sketch people don't always notice around me (coworkers) but if I tell them this takes an effort from me they are surprised. So I am relating a lot with this show. Nice to see that it's actually a quite common thing. (not 1 in a million at least)

It is actually scary to watch VLDL's sketches on anxiety. They are so relateable that I can barely watch them. I still want them to continue doing these videos because awareness on anxiety is so important. I once started having an anxiety attack while on my way to the doctor to talk about my anxiety. If someone on the street hadn't spotted my exact condition and helped me, I'm not sure I would have ever seen the doctor and started to get treatment for it.

How is it treated? Asking...for a friend...
@ppunion
@ppunion Жыл бұрын
@@ZarkowsWorld Well... For me the treatment looked like this: 1. Medication, which took a while to get right. 2. Individual therapy. 3. After individual therapy ended, group therapy. The therapy was largely looking into coping mechanisms. The easiest of them to master is the square breathing technique, where you stare at a square object like a window and let your eyes follow one side slowly while breathing in and then follow the next side slowly while holding it in and then letting it go and rinse repeat. Or more advanced strategies such as alternative thoughts and exposure therapy. The honest answer is that for me I have had to work my way back from literally not being able to leave my apartment for anything, including shopping, all the way up to having a job at an electronics store (in the warehouse part). It took a lot of time and there are still things that I cannot do and I still have setbacks, but my life is so much better now. Your best bet is to talk to health professionals about it, because as much as I know about it, there are still plenty I don't know.

My hubby helped me with this. He started sitting beside me while I made calls and narrating what I should say. For me, it came down to having a pre-determined set of phrases and responses. Once there were ‘rules’ and a basic script in place, it became so much easier because the unknown elements were basically gone. Had a similar fear of restaurants (don’t laugh). My family was poor and never ate out growing up. Then I got married. My husband loves food and wants to eat out all the time. Initially, this was a huge stressor for me: How do you know where to go when you first enter? Host seats you or seat yourself? Order at a counter? Cafeteria style? Endless buffet? Where do you pay? Does the check come to you or do you have to go up front? Or does it come to you and THEN you go up front? Took a while before I realized that most restaurants fell into a few basic categories, and everything in a category functioned the same way. Now I can enjoy the experience instead of fret the whole time.

Ehhhh, yes and no. A lot of companies are really weird with emails and chat. Most of the time, if you have a special request or you need a special accommodation or have a complicated issue, you still need to call their offices to speak with a live human. Because emails and chats are "in writing", companies may limit their representatives to used specific saved replies and if they deviate, they could get in trouble. Which means the reps don't have options to offer you beyond that pre-approved reply the company sends you. But with a phone call, because it's happening in real time with a live person and the company wants you have a good experience chatting with the reps, the reps have more freedom to help you and offer you solutions that are not within those saved replys for emails and chats.
