4 жыл бұрын

The Cold Fusion line off of North Timpanogos, UT can be seen from the cities of Utah miles away and thousands of feet below. Its sight alone draws in skiers like bears to honey. What drew The FIFTY crew to Cold Fusion is a potential for sunny skies and unusually stable avalanche conditions. With a last minute call from Utah locals, the crew decides to hop in the car, drive across the desert and give Cold Fusion a chance. Starring Cody Townsend, Bjarne Salen, Drew Peterson and Mali Noyes. Photography by Bjarne Salen and Ming Poon.
This is Episode 22 for The FIFTY, and line 21 completed by Cody Townsend. The FIFTY is a project following Cody Townsend as he attempts to climb and ski all fifty of the lines and mountains chronicled in the book, "The 50 Classic Ski Descents of North America." The series documents Townsend's journey's, travels, challenges and each line and mountain listed in the book. It's a journey through the most majestic mountains and ski lines in North America along with a unique insight into how skiers make decisions in the backcountry, how they plan, navigate and safely move through the mountains and the people that dedicate their lives to the mountains.

“Never let the cross county skier set the pace on a skin track”! Ha, I know that too well, having skied regularly with a once ultra-runner myself. Just as I would summit, he would be skins off, refueled, and ready to rip... Oh, and nice color matching, team orange!

I like how so many people climb mountains and they hit the summit and that's the goal and its a good goal because that climb looks very hard for the average person. These people hit the summit and they're like ok we summited this mountain now lets do what we actually came here to do and ski down this gnarly looking steep rocky avalanche chute.

I feel like a scold for saying this and it's probably obvious to everyone, but... assessing avalanche safety is way more complicated than that brief "ECT digression". For one thing, Cody (I think) mentioned a persistent weak layer early in the video. Those can be present in some places but not in others due to wind and weather affect on the early-season hoar, so if you don't dig your pits in the right places you won't find the true hazard. When Cody mentioned doing "hasty" pits on the way up, that's one way to test whether the snow has changed relative to what you tested. Also, those beacons aren't much use if you expose 3/4 of your party at the same time on the way down. I'm sure that Cody and co had a very good handle on the hazard and were perfectly safe in doing so, but for the rest of us it's a good idea to only expose one skier at a time, both climbing and descending (see: 4/20/13 Sheep Creek avalanche for an example of not limiting exposure on the ascent). With that said, see avalanche.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/06_ISSW_Simenhois.pdf if you want to geek out on the test they used.
