CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Dickie (Christian Bale) takes his cake and visits his old friends at the crack house.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Mark Wahlberg stars in Paramount Pictures' inspirational docudrama exploring the remarkable rise of Massachusetts-born, junior welterweight title winner "Irish" Micky Ward. A determined pugilist whose career in the ring was shepherded by his loyal half-brother, Dicky (Christian Bale) -- a hard-living boxer-turned-trainer whose own career in the ring was nearly sent down for the count due to drugs and crime -- perennial underdog Irish Micky rebounded from a disheartening series of defeats to win both the WBU Intercontinental Lightweight title and the WBU Light Welterweight title thanks to a fierce combination of determination and hard work. David O. Russell directs from a script by 8 Mile's Scott Silver and Paul Attanasio (The Bourne Ultimatum).
CREDITS:
TM & © Paramount (2010)

My mom and my brother both cried when they watched this scene. It was incredibly powerful to watch this man so tortured by his addiction finally truly let go of it and had the immense strength to just simply walk away. Outstanding performance by Bale. Love this movie.

I just got out of the pen, I’m sober finally and you just want to get me back in that little fackin dark corner I couldn’t come out of.... Naw, I have a corner to be in now and that’s my brother’s you fackin loser hillbilly. How fackin stupid was I to think you’d ever have my back or were a friend. Happy birthday, “The Pride of Lowell” isn’t back. He never left, and I gotta go be there for him because he has a chance to do something I never did.... enjoy the cake fatty. Peace y’all.”

this is a not perfection but completion as Carl G jung had described. In this moment, Dickey became a complete person. He realized it's not by fighting the temptation but by accepting it, we can defeat it. He has dropped the rope in the 'tug of war' and hence he could never be defeated by his temptations. A happy beginning can only come out of a happy ending-this was the closure he chose for his drug addiction. Hats off to Christian Bale for bringing it so beautifully on the screen!

This scene when he gives “The Pride of Lowell” cake (immense symbolism) to his addict former friend is a signatory moment where he is letting go of that title. Moments later while walking away he licks the icing off his finger. Enjoying a ‘natural high’, a SUGAR rush if you will, and moments after that he admits to Charlene that SUGAR Ray had slipped in the fight. He begs Charlene to be in his corner, because he knows that Mickey needs her. He let’s go of the title, knowing that Mickey is going to be the new Pride of Massachusetts... let alone Lowell. He makes up with Charlene, becomes sober, and is the first one to go to lift Mickey on his shoulders (another symbolic moment) carrying him on his shoulders but couldn’t do it alone. Mr. O’Russell has quite the connection with these actors.... but what a f*^***g well written scene, let alone movie. Bale deserved the Oscar and that standing ovation. -CinemaCriss©

Agreed with this whole thing. Very well put. I have to question whether or not he was admitting that Sugar Ray slipped. When he said to her “I was in that ring that night don’t you think I know what happened?” I took it as Him telling her yes I knocked him down. Wouldn’t I know this better than you?” But who knows. You could be right. Great analysis

He acted at a professional level in this movie, unlike many titles he is in. To be honest i never knew that Christian Bale had this kind of talent inside of him. Because of the proof that he actually is a very good actor we can easily blame the directors that he worked with..because Bale is the type of actor that needs specifik direction during the making of a movie. When he recieves that kind of information, the actingskills are strong.
