NOTE FROM TED: While some viewers might find advice provided in this talk to be helpful as a complementary approach, please do not look to this talk for medical advice. We've flagged this talk, which was filmed at a TEDx event, because it appears to fall outside TEDx's content guidelines. This talk contains sweeping claims around early childhood development and epigenetics that are not supported by sufficient scientific evidence. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/t...
Sergio Pecorelli unveils his most recent research studying the environmental impacts on early life, from conception to 24 months. This fascinating talk highlights the critical benefits to lifelong health these first 1,000 days of life have on physical, mental, and emotional health. Sergio Pecorelli received his Medical Degree cum Laude at the University of Pavia, with his residency in OB/ GYN cum Laude at the University of Milano. After that, he completed his Fellowship in Pelvic Surgery at Mayo School of Medicine with a PhD in Gynecologic Oncology Research. His research has focused on female cancer and the implementation of primary and secondary prevention actions. Among other awards, he has received the Gold Medal for Public Health Services from the President of the Republic of Italy. He serves as part of the scientific committee of the Italian Olympic Sports Medicine Federation and is President of the Giovanni Lorenzini Medical Foundation.
He initiated, with an international team, a first-of-its-kind research project, called “The First 1000 days of Life”, aiming at studying 1500 pregnant women, their babies and the fathers of these babies. The study observes environmental influence on future health and wellness of these babies and their future generations. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Being hungry or exposed to stress or abuse during this time can have a lifelong effect on a child's development. An unsafe or unhealthy environment in the first 1,000 days can affect a child's physical health in later life too.

Massages, lullabies, anything she wanted to eat... being active in that support role really mattered to her and I could tell the better I got at it the more at ease and confident she was as well. Our baby is so happy and healthy now and I think that's a pretty good reflection.

Thank you Fred! I was amazed too, but this happens very often when you try to translate edge science into practice for lay public. It’s also one of the reasons why prevention has always been neglected. If I simplify my talk, the message is that lifestyles and behaviors impact most upon our health and well-being, especially if you start even before conception. Simple to be understood, especially if we start teaching it in school! Best! SP

The talk reinforces the importance of our environment-air, water, food. Time to make conscious choices for a healthier planet and, by extension, a healthier first 1000 days for our little ones.

I totally agree with this man. I've worked in child care for a long time and you can see the difference in the infants and toddlers whose parents clearly put in the time and effort before birth and after... However, I have noticed in my years that those who have had the best start pretty much directly correlates with higher socioeconomic backgrounds... So I wonder, with wages continuing to stay stagnant and the like - how are we meant to make sure the majority are given the opportunity to bring children into this world with the best possible start, when society makes it near impossible...

I'm excited to take my baby on nature adventures during those early days. Fresh air, birdsong, and a touch of sunshine-because a healthy environment isn't just indoors.
