So exciting for Matteo. I am glad that Germany does this. It makes the transition to school easier.

Hi. Its basically the same here in Berlin. The only difference is that „Einschulung“ ceremony is always on the first Saturday after the first week of school. My first school day was in 1985 and it was also a Saturday. After the ceremony the children spent an hour or so in their new class and then go home. The school then starts regularly on the following Monday. It’s really nice because that way the whole family can celebrate that day with coffee and cake or barbecue after the ceremony and the family doesn’t have to take a day off from work. It’s really cute to see all the little first graders in the streets all dressed up with their families on that particular Saturday morning. 😍

In Schleswig-Holstein, “Saturday school enrollment” seems to be school-dependent and not a general rule. Our children were also offered a small ecumenical service in advance and then the participating children went together with their parents to the sports hall, where the actual school enrollment ceremony took place. There, every 1st grader received a “school mentor” from the 4th grade. Afterwards, the first graders had about 1 hour of introductory lessons and the parents and guests (mostly grandparents and godparents) were provided with drinks and snacks in the schoolyard.

Congratulations to both of your children! I hope all three are happy and healthy. The first day of school was very similar to my boys in Ba-Wü. The first day of Weiterführendeschule was similar minus the Schultüte. The kids and parents met at school. The Rektorin gave a little speech, the teachers called out the kids from their classes and took the kids into school for a short day. The parents had a cup of coffee/Brezel and then left after chatting a bit. The kids were home for lunch.

My 1st day of school was in 1963 in Erlangen, there was no "school app" by that time, computers were operated by a crank (Tischrechner), like the old cash registers. And our telephone was supplied by Deutsche Bundespost (now Telecom), was attached to the wall and was the rotary style. I really enjoyed my school during 1st grade, after that I just hated school, same with college. For me it was just a means to eventually get a useful job.

Glad everything went well .. two kids and for parents as well. My first school day was back in 1976 in a Bavarian rural area and I don't remember it much - Schultüte of course, in that time some candy or pencil etc, but as well 1 or 2 apple as a cheap filling. In generell I guess it was much less effort as nowadays to let the kids get smoothly into first grade. I assume school/teachers do a lot of effort to make it more and more easier for kids. Especially the first day of first grade: very short (and still overwhelming for the kids), parents are nearby with coffee&cake, it's more a positve (party) feeling. In our local newspaper first group photos of beginner school classes already published.

The first school bag is also a big deal because typically you keep it for the 4 years of elementary school, almost everyone did in my school :)

A great day for the little man. Although it's not that long since I started school (15 years), I can only remember two things well - my school cone and the fact that I messed up my mom's new dress with my hot chocolate.

I grew up in Baden - Württemberg. I can't remember my first day of school very well. But I remember that all children where in a big room. I think it was the aula. Without the parents.I guess they where in the background or outside the room. They showed a song which I knew from a tape. It's called das kleine Trampeltier von Frederick Vahle which was very exciting for me. I was very disappointed when I saw, that it could be chosen an other schoolbag brand. I thought I was only allowed to by a bag from the brand scout. Because the commercials where so overwhelming. So we bought a red one from this brand. But I rather loved to have a pink Amiga. My school cone was red with a panda and white fabric on top to close it. After that official part we went home and had a barbeque at our garden. My first real day at school was a bit chaotic, because I was at the wrong school. I have to explain this. My primary school was splitterd into two schools. A big an a small one with the same name. The rules said I have to go to the big one because I lived in their "Einzugsgebiet". But the big one was further away from my home than the little one. So my mother fought for the ability to send me to the smaller one. So because of that I had my "Einschulung" at the big one and my first day of school, with my fist lesson at the smaller school.

Had three kids here, gone through the pregnancy and birth to kindergarten, Grundschule and weiterführende Schools and even the Ausbildung system. Time really flies. From third year when the exams start I think we can except less enthusiasm about the system and later when they do English… 😬

Ah i remember the massive celebration and Schultüte ❤ loved as a kid but as a mum now I’m really glad we don’t have that in the UK and my nervous introverted kids were able to go into their first year of school without making it a bigger deal that it needs to be.

I can’t really remember my first day in school, it was in 1986, so pretty much all of my memories are overshadowed by Chernobyl. But my child’s first day in school was similar, no app yet and a child-appropriate church service for everyone, who wanted to attend (Protestant, Catholic, Muslim, atheist, … everyone was welcome). Auftreten that we had the ceremony in school.

I remember my Schultüte was green and had a mushroom theme. I think I picked that theme myself but I have no idea why. Otherwise I remember rather unique incidents like me and my mother bumping heads when I opened my Schultüte or the waiter at the restaurant that we went to giving my little brother the nickname Fritzchen.

In Hessen the kids get into the school a "Schulbrezel" at their first school day and a fotograph make pictures with the Brezel from the whole class, my little son had hunger and bits into his brezel before the fotos were made, so he have a foto with a big whole in his brezel.

at the end now things are getting serious cause school is at the end survival of the fittest. Grundschule is easy and learning is slow but gets faster the closer it comes to the end of elementary school which is a kind of switch in life cause university will require that you have been on the gymnasium or an equally school which is rare cause students from the gymnasium usually surpass those from these other school where you can not get a general Abitur, only specialised which will limit the access to the university and what can be studied there. You have to get through and stay focussed for 13 years to get the degree from the gymnasium which allows you to study in general except a few like medicine and what not where certain skills and levels are required like latin skills and what not. Full time school is also not better cause it cuts off the freedom in the noon to develope hobbys and share experiences, sports, learn instruments and what not. It is more or less an option that mothers get more time without the need to have someone who is looking for their child if they are at work or not at home. But at the end the child looses options and comes home far more exhausted than from the usual school. At the end of the day you trade something in and get 2 or 3 hours back cause usual school from gymnasium ends about 1 pm and full time school 4 pm with the difference that your child has 3 hours to learn alone at his or her learning speed and how she like to learn which is different from a class room situation. Here the usual sport courses for kids start in the noon, also to learn to build and fly a model rc plane which for examples starts at 3 pm here and rowing 2:30 pm 2 times a week. Good luck for Matheo and Emilia for the upcoming challenges in this post covid era, which makes a lot of things easier than in the previoius years
