So cool to see the Native people of that era living, breathing, moving, rather than just a portrait. Amazing!

This film was released and made public by Library of Congress. They rekease one film each year. White Fawn was played by Lucille Younge. Digital copies of films in Library of Congress can be obtain for cost of processing to a flash drive. I obtained a film with Lucille Younge which is available on KZfaq. Behind the Times 1911 with Owen Moore and Ethel Grandin.

The chief was spectacular! I really enjoyed watching this. Amazing how many of life’s problems are caused by communication breakdowns.

So awesome, this is some great history. I have a fascination with older film and movie. Silent films just carry this eerie feeling about them and it intrigues me

My comment was going to be "misunderstanding is the root of human suffering" but that last frame a chief pointing "out" That tribe becomes a reservation. That family becomes a nobility. Because of one gesture.

Thanks for showing an example of silent film. I'm not sure about how accurately it portrays the Native American. While maybe not in film format, there are more accurate ways to depictions of Native Americans.

@@smokeyjoe6177 All movies were silent until "The Jazz Singer" (the very first "talkie", or movie with sound) was released in 1927. 🙂

@@emilyvogt66 Many silents had "sound" years before 1927 in the form of music accompaniment, whether original for the film or later an added score. Here, unless someone adds it, there is none.

Not bad at all for 1910. Feels so authentic also. None of that sappy Hollywood crap which would be soon to come.

Is this the inspiration for Disneys Pocahontas...? Cuz it kinda seems like it is. Like I dont mean it in a rude way or anything but especially like the last 20 seconds of the film

The inspiration for Pocahantas was from John Smith's 1616 story. Smith told a number of stories in different settings - in one, he is taken prisoner by Tatars after battle, then sold as a slave to a Greek mistress who falls in love with him. He then escapes to what is now Russia, and after a long odyssey in Europe and North Africa he returns to England.

The Pocahontas visual connection at the end of the movie has been cited by many. Those early silents were strongly influenced by literary sources, Pocahontas being one of them. Scholars have also noted that Young Deer simply reversed The Squaw Man's story, already an established play back in 1905. In White Fawn's Devotion, instead of the Native woman killing herself when she believes her white husband abandons her, she feigns death and is happily reunited with him.
