In November of 1969, a group of Native American activists embarked on a bold and historic endeavor that would captivate the nation's attention: the takeover of Alcatraz Island.
Led by a group named Indians of All Tribes and it's leaders: Richard Oakes, LaNada War Jack, than LaNada Means, John Trudell, Stella Leach, and Al Miller.
The takeover aimed to reclaim Alcatraz as Native land. Lasting for 19 months, the occupation sparked widespread awareness of Indigenous rights and issues. Through archival footage, interviews, and historical analysis, this video explores the motivations, challenges, and lasting impact of the Alcatraz occupation.
The protest gained public support for Native Americans in fight for their rights. Numerous famous people supported the protest. Jane Fonda, Anthony Quinn, Marlon Brando, Jonathan Winters, Buffy Sainte Marie and Dick Gregory visited the island to show their support. The band Creedence Clearwater Revival supported the takeover with a 15000 dollar donation.
This action ignited a flame in red power Native activism, laying the groundwork for actions and protests organized by the American Indian Movement (AIM) and other groups.

They blatantly ignored it and is still ignoring it despite the court siding with the Souix in 1980 they are currently selling mining rights and land despite it being the land of the Souix and Ponca land

There was a lot of talk at my house about this. My Cherokee mother and Creek father wanted to go - but stayed because of the school she was building. Arrowhead School.

The protesters should have taken a deal while they had one because the movements always seem to go awry. Unfortunately, you don't play chicken with the United States Federal Government and win.
