I'm what they call an original Trekkie! I was there for the series premier in 1966. Star Trek is great science fiction and , IMHO, should be seen in it's entirety. Yes, there are a few episodes that may be wanting but regardless, I will be here with you for each and every episode😮😊ENJOY!!

This was the first to air, but actually the 6th to be filmed. I remember seeing this in 1966. If you are looking for best starting with season 1, I would start with: "The Corbomite Maneuver", "Arena", "The City on the Edge of Forever", and "Space Seed" (not because it is one of the best, but because of the tie to ST2). next season 1 tier: "Where No Man Has Gone Before" "The Naked Time" "The Menagerie"

Basically any from S1-S2 you can't go wrong!

Look at the opening scene again: Nancy has two different hair colors, black for McCoy, and salt & pepper for Kirk, in addition to a whole different appearance top to bottom for Darnell. McCoy looks at her strangely in the scene after the credits when they find Darnell dead because at that point Nancy appears with both black and gray hair at the same time, to him as well as Kirk.

How this became Season 1 Episode 1: After two pilot episodes, Star Trek was set to premire Mid-September 1966. Then someone at NBC (the US network airing ST) thought it would be a great idea to celebrate this was the first year all their shows were in color by premiring their new shows two weeks early! Except that second pilot had a lot of effects that still need polishing in post production. Three compleated episodes were offered in its place. The network saw the words 'alien monster' in The Man Trap description and said "We'll take this one" 😊

Watch them all! If you decide it isnt your taste you can always move on!

"What's he got in his ear?" - what they thought a futuristic ear-pod would look like (one they got wrong - but the flip phone they got right) - You'll see Uhura has one too,

Please keep in mind that Shatner and Nimoy do not have their characters down. It took them a few episodes to create their characters. Not to mention the rest of the cast of gel with each other.

Right here in the1st episode aired is the indication of McCoy's age. "Hardly 25" "When I met her 12 years ago" and "Walked out of each other's lives 10 years ago." Pretty much says McCoy is around 47 (Kelley's actual age at the time 46). Shatner's aactual age at the time - 35.* Yet 2 seasons later the idea of McCoy having a 20 something daughter who would crush on Kirk when she visited her father on the ship was rejected "because the audience perceived Kirk and McCoy to be cliose to the same age" - I always knew they was a 12 to 15 year difference. * According to Memory Alpha (a site that coordinates data from the films and shows), Kirk was born in 2233 and took command of the Enterprise in 2265 when he was 32 and makes him only a year older in this season (2266 - and validates my memory that Shatner was playing Kirk a wee younger). However, Memory Alpha agrees with the notion that they're closer in age saying McCoy was born in 2227 making him 39 at this point. Spock is listed as born in 2230 (even though Nimoy was born 5 days after Shatner). Considering the supposed longer life span of Vulcans I might have made him a bit older These future dates - determined long after the third season of TOS - still don't rule out the possibility of McCoy having a 20 year old daughter.for an episode set in 2268. The only question is would her mother have been Nancy?

I love the fact that you are watching the ORIGINAL version of the series... not the remastered version from 2007 with new CGI effects. You are seeing what we saw when we first watched the episodes all those decades ago. Since you are watching the original version with the original effects, I want to clue you onto something that you may or may not have noticed. A lot of stock shots were made of the Enterprise model for the second pilot. A LOT. However, when the show was green lit for full production, it was decided to upgrade the 11-foot ship model. Some changes were made... rotating fans and flashing lights in the front of the warp engines instead of dark red globes with spires in them, a change in the backside of the warp engines from small portholes to protruding half-circles... a realignment of the under-saucer navigational lights, the main sensor dish made smaller, the bridge section of the ship made smaller.... lots of little things like that. BUT... since a LOT of stock shots of the earlier version were made, the decision was made to continue to use them instead of refilming them with the upgraded model. As a result, you will see them mixed in with the production version shots, so one shot will show the Enterprise with spinning and blinking front engine caps, but the next shot will show them as painted dark red with little spires through them. The remastered versions with CGI effects took care of the inconsistencies by making all shots of the Enterprise somewhat the same, but for most viewers, the original model effects shots just look more "real". As you watch the episodes, you will see what I mean.

The thing on Spock's ear is a communications ear piece device. Also i'm so glad your watching the original series with the original effects as it was in 1966 👍. Watch the entire series in broadcast order I think you'll be in for a ride I'm glad your enjoying it.

Fun whenever I find someone taking on the original series. Many incredible stories, touching on subjects you couldn't easily put on TV of those days. A few episodes you really need to see ; Balance of Terror, City on the edge of forever, Doomsday Machine, Amok time.

The brightly-colored uniforms (and bright color in general) was because this was during the transition from black-and-white TVs to color, and so the show had to look good (and the characters be identifiable) on both kinds of TVs. 7:00 "What's he got in his ear?" -- Star Trek predicted Bluetooth earpieces almost 40 years before they became a thing. 🙂 9:35 "What is that device" -- that is, in fact, the communicator. That compact "flip-phone" style was a radical idea at a time when most science-fiction shows used redressed, military-surplus walkie-talkies with radio antennae sticking out of them. 🙂 12:09 Actually, Sulu *was* the helmsman at this point . One aspect of his character was that he had a lot of different hobbies he indulged in during his off-hours, although that kind of got pushed to the background as the series went on. The frequent "Captain's Log" entries were typically placed at the points where they came back from commercial breaks. It was to help remind the audience where they were in the episode, and also to catch up anyone who might just be tuning in after switching channels during the commercial break. Sometimes it was also used to bridge two scenes with a quick exposition, without having to actually show the events in between.

I had seen the movie... it's an... experience... and I walked to my house and my mom was on the couch (she's super clean cut and bubbly and dorky) and soon as I entered she was watching IFC (Independent film chanel) and I heard the music. I knew INSTANTLY what she was watching, and I knew instantly she was entering the final half hour. she looked at me in horror and explained this movie started while she cleaned, and after a bit, she just couldn't look away anymore and had been stuck on the couch, unable to move. I nodded and said ok I'll be back in half an hour, and we'll have to have a talk about it. she was like 'YOU'VE SEEN THIS?!?!' I'm like, yep, that music is burned in my head. I haven't even looked at the TV, and I know exactly where you're at. I'm going to my room. I'll be back. lol, we both have a love for independent film. we both love Buffalo 66' for an insite into our tastes lolol we still bring this movie up when discussing film every now and then... love or hate it, you'll never forget it.

"City on the edge of forever" is amazing in my view. There are other good ones, but I only remember that title :-)

Every once in a while you'll find a main cast member MIA - because there were no lines for their character. The ship pilot has no lines in this episode except "Warp One,sir" - so Sulu got the role of the botanist who otherwise would have been another actor. You wouldn't expect Scotty of having an affinity for botany. This of course leads to Sulu having diverse hobbies.

There were some exotic salt shakers ordered for that scene where Janice puts salt on the food. They were rejected bacause the audience wouldn't recognize them as salt shakers. They were repurposed as dome of Dr. McCoy's medical instruments.

There is something closer to a consensus on the TOP FIVE episodes on the Original Series, than on what are the ‘best’ episodes after that top-5 tier. The five listed above, are much worse.) •••• ...If you want to "get as much out of the Original Series as possible," you'd be well served to check out the podcast "Enterprise Incidents with Scott And Steve" (available on KZfaq & elsewhere. ) They went through the original series episode by episode (in production order) and brought an amazing level of insight to this show that has been around for more than 55 years. They had a great many insights that even long-time enthusiasts like myself, hadn't noticed or hadn't considered. (I would take in their podcast treatment after you've watched the episodes themselves, naturally.)

The other guy is a redshirt (even though his shirt is blue). The term didn't become a thing until later in the series - which lead to the division color changes in TNG (hint: science/medicine remained blue).

Viewing order does not matter. I watched these growing up in the '70s, in the days of the affiliate stations who just grabbed random episodes off a shelf. The pilot didn't even air (outside of conventions) until the '90s. Didn't prevent me from falling in love with the series.

As a fan that started watching it in 1969 when it went into syndication on my local channel I'd say watch them all. It is one of tvs great series. Production order may be better than broadcast order but I don't think it matters much as I saw them all out of order in syndication and it still became my favorite series. Sure it has lesser episodes but many more great ones.

There are pros and cons to watching the original, unaltered show as opposed to the remastered version with CG ship scenes, but I generally recommend first time viewers to watch the remastered episodes. Obviously the classic effects are the true way the show was experienced back in the day, but many of the space battle scenes are really sparse and outdated by today's standards. You'll also notice that there are really only about 10 shots of the Enterprise in the entire classic show that they reused endlessly. As much as I personally love the original, the remastered version seriously improves on all this, and it's for that reason that I think it's probably worth switching over since you're younger and your expectations will be higher. The remastered effects are very well done for their time, and it allows the show to be what the creators envisioned if they'd had an infinite budget for effects. I know this is probably controversial, and that you'll get a lot of old schoolers insisting that you watch the unaltered versions. But episodes like "The Ultimate Computer" and "The Doomsday Machine"are much more enjoyable in remastered unless you're a pure historian. Since you have no nostalgia for the original presentation, I think remastered would be better.

hey there! glad to have ya aboard! Before I make a list, There ate TWO versions of every episode. In 2006 they remastered the show. They rescanned the film to make it higher resolution. And the remade all the special effects. Its not perfect, but it was a big improvement. You can easily tell by looking at the Enterprise. The newer cgi is much cleaner. Although the lighting of the ship models are all kinda dim and gloomy looking

Watch them all. No, not every episode is a banger, but there's value in scenes and character moments that you only get by watching the entire series.

The device in Spock's ear and briefly seen in Uhura's ear is what we would call today an ear bud. Ours are much smaller of course. And the communicator in the original series is the inspiration for the cell phone. Captain Kirk gets a bad reputation for being a womanizer. While he has romantic interests in the show, he also uses his charm to get information. "She's got some great salt there." And a uniform she had the costume designer tweak so it showed off her legs more. (Maybe she was the inspiration for ZZTops Legs). If you just continue on you'll realize the episodes are appearing out of production order error (for instance Episode 3) There are two episodes where Uhura wears a gold uniform - they were the episodes filmed directly after the 2nd pilot - then Nichelle saw Janice's uniform and said "Hey, wait a minute!!!! and got her own red dress. Seriously they looked at that those two episodes - realized positioning of the work stations made the gold and blue uniforms prominent - Uhhura in gold behind Kirk also in gold mage her disappear into the background but a red uniform would make her pop and put all three colors in most shots. And who was more deserving of a pop than Nichelle?

But I’d watch as many as you can to at least get the feel for who the characters become.

They were still going with the trope of horny sailors (girl in ever port type) on a naval ship suddenly having female crew members. If you watch one of the inspirations for Star Trek - Forbidden Planet - you'll see an all male crew reacting to a very attractive 19/20 year old woman - after a long journey that was, at least, months through space.

1st episode broadcast, sixth filmed. But either broadcast order or production order is good. It's true that one can watch in any order, but it's mildly helpful to see the concepts slowly developed and firmed up. I'd recommend watching at least all of the first two seasons and then doing a best of the third, which was much inferior after Roddenberry quit as show-runner and was replaced by Fred Freiberger, who both didn't get science fiction, and had to work with an even smaller budget. This is also an extremely unusual episode compared to the ethic of all the rest of STAR TREK, where alien life is to be understood and communicated with and preserved unless there's absolutely no other choice. If this was what ST became, they would have tried to communicate with the salt creature, and find it a safe place to live out its life with adequate salt/food, etc. But they hadn't figured that part out yet.

Count me among those who recommend watched the ORIGINAL 1960s optical-effects - as you did with this episode. So much of what is great about TOS was due to its unique and fantastic collection of talented actors and film-artisans who contributed to the show’s success and longevity. For first time viewers, like yourself, who seek to experience what it was like for audiences and fans who watched the Series during the 1960’s (and, later, in reruns), IMHO, should definitely choose NOT to watch the modern, cgi-crafted effects.

1. Grace Lee Whitney was always my favorite hottie on this show. Unfortunately, there wasn't enough room for two hot blondes. Gene Roddenberry married Majel Barrett/Nurse Chappel so guess who got the gig. There was also behind the scenes issues that sent her packing.☹ 2. This is one of the very few episodes where "Bones" completely loses his cool. 3. Welcome abord mate.😁

Im seeing an unusual amount of negativity here surprisingly. There is a reason that Star Trek is the only sci-fi show in history to have its own conventions first. Lets have some optimism here!

With Season 1, it's easier to recommend episodes you _shouldn't_ watch than ones you should. It's a really solid season. The exceptions are "Miri" and "The Alternative Factor." The same is true with Season 2. It has a few duds, like "The Apple" and "The Omega Glory," but it's overall on par with the first season, churning out one classic after another. But Season 3 . . . not so much. It has "The Enterprise Incident," "Is There in Truth No Beauty," "Let that Be Your Last Battlefield," and a few other good episodes, but it's mediocre. And there's the animated series, which acts as Season 4. "Yesteryear" is worthwhile viewing, and there are a few fun sequels to the live-action episodes, but the animation is bad.

Will, with maybe one exception, every episode of the first two seasons is superb, and with only a few exceptions, every episode of the third and final season sucks. There's an historical reason why that happened.
