HITC Sevens

2 жыл бұрын

Only three teams have been crowned as Serbian champions since the breakup of Yugoslavia in 1992; Partizan Belgrade, Red Star Belgrade, and FK Obilić.
Whilst Partizan and Red Star have long been two of the biggest and most successful teams in the region, Obilić came out of nowhere in the 1990s, bankrolled by a notorious warlord who was wanted by Interpol.
In this documentary, HITC Sevens takes a look at one of the most controversial football clubs, and one of the most contentious league titles, of all time, along with Željko Ražnatović - better known as Arkan - who was the man behind that success.

When Obilić was gaining traction and progressing through the ranks of Yugoslav football in 1993 or 1994 (can't remember exactly), it played against my hometown club in second division (1B Liga it was called then). The ref added 17 minutes to the game, namely until Obilić managed to score a goal for a 1:0 win. Not to mention that the refs had to leave town accompanied by a police escort after that.

After Obilic got relegated to lower tears they actually ended up in the same league as the club from my home town, where I was a player. It was 7th or 8th tear back then, not entirely sure. Considering we usually played on small, poorly kept pitches it was quite an experience for us playing the game on their stadium.

the balkans are infested with westerners and americans, that's also part of our problem. We are part of NATO and all other shit organizations that don't bring us any benefits but we bleed human lives, and riches that are siphoned out of our countries to the ultra rich and ultra powerful monstrosities in america, russia, germany, netherlands or wherever. It's been like this for centuries now. My country, Romania, always craved by the russians and americans alike, I've read somewhere that 15-20% of our lands are already in the hands of foreigners (dutch, germans, americans, russians, etc). Soon, we will be kicked out of our lands so that these vultures can enjoy our women, our riches, and our fresh air. This has been a problem with our Balkans and until we, Romanians, keep Romania to ourselves, Serbians keep Serbia to themselves, Bulgarians keep Bulgaria to themselves and so on... until we keep our lands and reign of the country in our own hands and share the wealth among us, Balkans we will never have peace, education, science, health, good living standards, and... football. Football in the Balkans, like everywhere else, is a result of a nation's prosperous economy and happy people. In late 80s and early 90s when Romania had still not been fully predated by the russian, hungarian, and american monsters yet we and Bulgarians produced great fooballers. Our great footballer Gheorghe Popescu captained Barcelona, for Christ's sake, and Hristo Stoichkov needs no introduction anymore. Our Gheorghe Hagi was carrying Real Madrid to glory in late 80s, and everyone knew players like Krasimir Balakov or Emil Kostadinov, so what are we even talking about? And I know that I didn't mention Serbia or Croatia in this comment but that's because these 2 nations have always produced quality players over the decades, so they're pretty good footballing nations, but so are we and Bulgarians are everyone else in this region. It's just that we're not let to live and enjoy peace so we can take care of tooball and sports in general because the global mafia that lives off small countries in general, and Balkanic / eastern European countries in particular want us constantly poor, uneducated, lazy and bleeding so they can rip us easier. Sad, really....

My coach who played for Buducnost Podgorica played against Obilic right before they played in the ucl, and Arkan came to their dressing room and said to the Buducnost players not to tackle his players because they played in the ucl soon so his player don't get injured. After my coach heard that he tackled them anyways and got a red card, so after the game Arkan cane up to him and said that he is not mad at him because he was the only one that has balls.

I remember talking to a guy from my small town who used to play for Obilic... Before he joined Obilic he was playing for the local club... And then there was a home game against Obilic, and he was dismantling them, but not really knowing who owns the club, and Arkan was spectating that game... Obilic lost that game 2-1 and Arkan was quick to point to him, saying "I want that guy on my team... ". The guy didn't have much choice but to join Obilic, since you don't say no to Arkan...😆 He joined Obilic out of fear, mostly...

I was present (although just a kid) on my local team's stadium, when Obilić won the game 1:0, but the weird thing is that the referee blew his whistle for end in 78th minute of the game. That was Yugoslavia's first division football. People say that when the locals confronted the referee about this, he reportedly told them: "It's better for me to be killed by you, than by Arkan". Fast forward into 2020s, Svetlana Ražnatović is STILL the most popular media figure, she has sold out concerts wherever she goes, and is an idol to serbian youth. Her and Arkan's son Veljko, is now a gangster, and his wedding was broadcasted on national television. That's for you to know that the Balkans never overcame the horrible 90s.

Theres so many crazy arkan stories. He was apparently connected to Serbian intelligence which explains some of the ways he mysteriously was slipped a gun and able to escape jail and be extracted out of the country. When he was tried in Serbia for assault he just walked up and put a folder that showed his massive mansion compound was payed for by the intelligence agency and the judge just dropped the case. Fun fact 1: There has been an interesting rivalry between Arkan's newly found Obilić and already existing Mladi Obilić back in the early '90s. Arkan had a team and a "vision" but lacked the necessary facilities. One day, he showed up to latter team's owner office and gave him an offer he couldn't refuse. Long story short, he was forced to sell at gunpoint. Fun fact 2: one of Arkan's most devoted disciples (if not the most) has gone on to lead a city of Jagodina for 18 years and counting, an eponymous football club by proxy for some time which saw them playing final round of Europa League qualifiers multiple times and is now being accused of statutory rape and running a sex ring while being active in mayoral position, bearing great similarities to Jeffrey Epstein. Just so you know that the cycle of scornful actions is yet to be broken. Fun fact 3: the club was a money laundering scheme from the get-go. Arkan's almost-as- repulsive widow was sentenced during the early '00s, along with her sister Lidija and her BF, leading to club's ultimate downfall. The media later sanctified her for being a victim of a witch hunt and cross she bore just for being a criminal's wife. Oddly, she was soon to be seen as the MP as the member of Democratic Party of Serbia. Fun fact 4: due to being a supporter of aforementioned party, she was given an informal amnesty for concealing arms used in an attempted coup by Arkan's buddies. Fun fact 5: Serbian FA is yet to elect a president after a year of limbo induced by ousting the former president who was introduced to football by his boss and our present dictator. He was previously a photographer and president's bodyguard. Otherwise, great video! The sorry state of football in the region could be a never ending source of inspiration.

Really great to see you make videos on Serbian football, even if the topic isn't exactly positive! Really well researched and unbiased, which a lot of foreigners doing videos on Yugoslavia struggle with. Some things I think people who watched will find fun: Soon after Arkan died, Obilić were knocked out of Intertoto Cup by Cibalia, a minor Croatian team Arkan's wife, Ceca, is still a major star in the Balkans. She's even one of the most popular singers in Croatia and Bosnia, despite her direct involvement in war crimes there Only some very minor mistakes- you say several times that SSJ became the Radical Party but really they were an incredibly minor party which merged into the Radicals due to lack of electoral success. Radicals themselves are struggling now as well, losing ground to more western style far right parties like POKS, Oathkeepers who take inspiration more from Putin, Orban and Republicans than the more traditional Serbian nationalists. Oh and there's also Leviathan, a a Neo-Nazi animal rights party led by a Jewish man ( no, really. Serbian far right was always wild). Also, Zoran Đinđić, who was assassinated by Arkan's former allies was our Prime Minister, not President as you said I have to reiterate that I really enjoyed the video, I hope you do more on Balkan and Serbian football someday- an overview of the Eternal Derby and the constant back and forth accusations of match fixing and stolen titles could be fun, as would the machinations of Tončev brothers in Radnički Niš and Radnik Surdulica, or the rise of the Hungarian minority TSC

I was surprised at the lack of supporter turnout / general fan support on the night of the game although the Red Star ultras were there in their hundreds. It rained heavily throughout the game which made me think that this was a metaphor for what Serbian football has become. Nevertheless I enjoyed my visit to Serbia, the Balkans are a special place ❤️

To ad some honesty to former Obilic players, many of them had succesful European carriers afterwards. For example midfilders Vukomanovic, Juskic, Grozdic and Sarac played for 1st Belgian league-Standard Liege, Bundesliga side-Nurnberg, 1st dutch divison-Vitesse and Ligue 1-Lens and Austria's Sturm Graz respectively. That somewhat proves that these were good players, lifted from Serbian 2nd division and proved themselves with Obilic giving them a shot when no other club wanted so.

You made a mistake around 15:40 mark, Arkan's party never had some big support, I think they managed to get in to parlament once but they no longer exist, they were relevant while Arkan was alive and for a short while after his assassination. And at 32:02 mark, Arkan's party didn't became Radical party, Radical party existed before they did, they kind of melted in to it. And Radical party was one of the biggest parties in Serbia up until 2012. when they split up and now they have around 1% of votes.

47 highest league fixtures of a nation without a loss? We are beginners then, my hometown club KuPS have played 29 games without a defeat in the Finnish Veikkausliiga, which is tied longest spell in Finnish top flight with OPS from 1980-81. However, we just cheer a lot, we don´t bribe or threaten players or referees. No assassinations!

Some says that Dinamo-Red star match was de facto start of Yugoslav war. Also there is a good thing that Serbs are slowly getting away from glorifying Arkan as "war hero" and getting with fact he was just war profiteer.
@draganmarkovic491

Some say that that event basically mad war possible in a way. After that event all senior police officers in Croatia were changed and majority of them were Serbs and after that almost all if not all of them were replaced by Croats. It also inflamed tensions, especially in Croatia among both Serbs and Croats. It is still debated why Arkan did that, was he payed by the Croats or did Serbian secret police overplayed their hand and couldn't see the dangers and consequences of those actions...
