The Footnotes of MGSV: Words to Control the Subconscious [Tape Investigation 1]

When MGSV: The Phantom Pain came out, some people thought it only included lots of story content in the form of tapes because it was simply unfinished. This is the start of a revolutionary YT series that seeks to examine whether or not this was the case. If we get enough support, we'll move on to the story itself: but for now, we have to 'set the table' so to speak, with some important context and background information.
We begin simply with the first tape you're given in TPP, 'British Sovereign Base Area - Dhekelia'. This, in turn, opens the door to a wide array of interrelated subjects, that form together a sort of tapestry of meta-meanings.
NOTE: At one point I intentionally change 'unconscious' to 'subconscious'. That has to do with the legacy of Sigmund Freud, who, though widely discredited as a psychologist, arguably, along with Carl Jung, pioneered the very concept that then he called 'subconscious' but today we prefer to call 'unconscious'. This, you see, is an example of 'word control': by saying one, you indirectly conjure to mind the other.
PT 1
0:00 - Introduction
01:03 - Tape 1, BSBA - Dhekelia
01:55 - Ocelot's peculiar, yet precise, choice of words are anachronistic
02:47 - The meaning of 'British Overseas Territory', and 'BSA
03:04 - Overview, Cyprus SBA (Sovereign Base Areas)
03:29 - Teaser for the 'Family Jewels' (huge trove of intel I've gathered over 5 years of research and development)
03:53 - The origins of the SBA on Cyprus
04:17 - The origins of the 'Special Relationship' between the US and UK, and the 'Concert of Europe' which became the UN today
05:18 - How the pursuit of global governance arguably triggered WW1
06:34 - The UK's rivals: Germany and Tsarist Russia (see: The Berlin Conference of 1884 and R. Kipling's "Kim" for more information)
07:08 - How the Victorian Era gave way to phantoms in the form of the Soviets and later, the Nazis (for more on the Victorian era Police State, see www.jstor.org/stable/20081332... and journals.openedition.org/chs/934 )
07:35 - Overview, suzerainty system, and how it morphed into 20th Century-era 'decolonization'
08:56 - The Suez Canal Incident
PT 2
10:24 - Ocelot's phrase 'British Military Hospital'
10:44 - The Alexandra Hospital Massacre in Singapore, 1942 (NOTE: The name Yamashita will be mentioned by Ocelot later on, who refers consciously to judo master Yasuhiro Yamashita, and unconsciously to Tomoyuki Yamashita, aka The Tiger of Malaya, who commanded the force that conducted the massacre)
11:24 - The debut of Disney's Pinocchio, 1 week and 2 years prior, at the Center Theatre (not Trade Center) in Manhattan
11:41 - Overview of Pinocchio in the context of its release on the verge of WW2
PT 3
15:50 - Monstruo, or the Whale (a paleo-etymological survey)
16:26 - Discussion of Livyatan Melvelli
18:30 - The deeply rooted origins of the concept 'Leviathan' in the 'unconscious past' of so-called Western society
18:50 - Pinocchio's monster being unconsciously conjured to mind by the fictitious phrase, "awaken the sleeping giant"
19:26 - Long-form discussion, analysis, and interpretation, George Orwell's "Inside The Whale" (see: orwell.ru/library/essays/whal...)
(NOTE: around 31:44 I blend two disparate songs onto each other in the background, subtly using music to enact Orwell's notion of doublethink)
FURTHER READING:
Henry Miller's "Tropic of Cancer" (www.amazon.com/Tropic-Cancer-...)
Review of the book, which inadvertently gets at what I was attempting with this video: www.independent.co.uk/arts-en...
"One might worry that I would have been corrupted by the book. Thankfully, at that point I found it totally incoherent; the page-long sentences unwinding like the ramblings of some drunken poet, wandering from meal to meal, drink to drink...The surrealist stream-of-consciousness style, the impossible mixture of social commentary and autobiographical rantings, did not provide me with the tools I required from so-called pornography. ...I mentally filed it away under "pretentious modernist experiment"."

Very impressive, so glad MGSV is back in your purview. The amount of suggestive connections in your vid between words, their concepts and their truth reveals the dense sinew still undiscovered in the Phantom Pain. The analysis of quietism, literature and the importance of 'sincerity' in fiction is really good. It reminds me of that scene in the Wonder Boys where Douglas & Downey Jr. are riffing about "Vernon" when Maguire wakes to flesh out a 'better' fiction than theirs. It wasn't that their fiction was worse or less creative, but rather, that Maguire's was 'true.' Or in Orwell's sense, 'sincere.' Keep up the awesome work! :))

The biggest intrigue about the tapes for me is the question of whether we can trust them to be real conversations instead of figments of our character's imagination. We have the Paz tapes which can't be true, so we have a solid precedent that the tapes could be imaginary. This is especially interesting in the light of the "Truth Tapes", which seem to be named after the Ministry of Truth from 1984, an institution which doesn't exactly live up to its name... Also, I'm so glad I found this channel, The Phantom Pain definitely deserves to be analysed closely; it's actually insane how many people miss the depth of the game just because it presents its story and themes in a different manner than the previous games in the series.

It’s funny that Orwell references Miller and Tropic of Cancer inside the whale essay, which now I need to read. But firs take its humorous just how unrelated Miller is to Orwell in terms of subject matter and writing style, curious to see how that would fit into his essay in any way outside of it opening barries in terms of promiscuous thought able to be more openly published.

That serpent/God conflict concept reminds me of a West African creation myth. Except in that one, the creator deity was actually wed to the serpent, a dragon named Aido Hwedo, and he assisted her in creating by carrying her in his mouth, making mountains/fertilizer out of his poop, and holding up the sky. She made the ocean to help him cool off while he held the sky.

Mgsv really have a extensive lore like the other mgs, like mgs3 for example, but some dont consider that new form of story telling in tapes as a "story telling" and simply hate one of the best metal gear game
@Rihcterwilker
@Rihcterwilker 4 жыл бұрын
Tapes in this game are basically the substitute to the codec calls. That's the thing, a codec call was a more elegant way to give exposition to the player, because there was this idea that you were still in the field, but took a break to listen to some random trivia, and it kinda of created a masquerade on the monotony of it. Just going through a menu and listening to a voice clip makes it look like it was an after thought that didn't had the time or budget to be implemented in a cutscene.
@DarkWatcher149
@DarkWatcher149 4 жыл бұрын
@@Rihcterwilker Yeah mate. To this day I wonder if Kojima was really forced to rush the game's development and didn't have the necessary financial support or if he really made the game exactly as he wanted, because in the official game guide he justifies why the game is like is in all aspects after all, there is no official pronouncement coming directly from Master Kojima himself saying something like: "I was forced to rush the game and I didn't finish it completely". Before I also thought that there was this possibility that the game was given to us incomplete and that Kojima was somehow forced to something, but reading some things directly from him as the official guide (as was mentioned) and seeing some interviews, I realized more and more that in some way mgsv is what he planned to be, in this case, a metal gear focused almost 100% on gameplay

Yo man, italiano wiever here. I've been binging your content, it is nothing short of amazing. Since I know you won't mind me correcting your pronunciation, here's how Monstro is called in the original Collodi tale of Pinocchio: Il terribile pescecane Eel teh(hard t)-rr(both hard r)ee-bee-leh peh-sheh-kah-neh So basically every italian 'i' is read as an English 'ee', but shorter, and every italian 'e' is like 'eh' in english but without much stress on the 'h', just the vowel. Same goes for the 'a' sound. I know it's messy for anglophones. Hope this comment made some sense for you all.

You can't say "its finished" when kojima himself said that its not and when we know roughly a third of the game was not completed and put into the game and when we know that it was the finale of the plot. By every standard its not a complete game. We could even argue that ground zero being its own standalone paid content makes it incomplete.

Ehh if I am not mistaken kojima himself said in an interview that MGSV turned out just like he planned it to be and he is happy with it. He says it's complete as well. And that third chapter is a myth although some missions were cut during the production which is normal but still the story is complete. Yeah u can say more hints and connections would have been better, agreed with that but let's just enjoy the game we have got rn without bitching for no reason. I think the game seems to be unfinished because a lot of the plot points seem to have been left unresolved ( and I’m aware that in some cases the resolution is implied in the cassettes, working off of the mgs lore in general). It just seems like the opening had a vibe and seeming intention that never really followed through into the rest of the game. Example: Why bring Chico up in gz and then basically ignore him for most of the rest of the game in tpp? Why did the skull face story stall out mid game to result in that awkward car ride. His story was so shallow compared to the way he was depicted early on. I think a lot of the fan theories are far fetched and a lot of what the fans attribute to why they think the story seems unfinished are moot points, I think all of us as fans could tell that the story felt like it ran out of steam after the start of chapter 2. So many “promises” of gz and the intro of tpp were left to resolve, if at all, in the least climactic ways possible. The only sense of resolution at all in the game were hidden in the paz tapes, which took us right back to the promises of gz. What could have been 😩...

Communism and fascism are both different types of socialism.

there's a grain of truth to what you're saying, and yet it's also insanely reductive. Mammals, birds, and reptiles all share a common ancestor. Are they 'different types of' the same organism? To quote Orwell at length, "Fascism, at any rate the German version, is *a form of capitalism* that *borrows* from Socialism just such features as will make it efficient for war purposes. Internally, Germany has a good deal in common with a Socialist state. Ownership has never been abolished, there are still capitalists and workers, and - this is the important point, and the real reason why rich men all over the world tend to sympathize with Fascism - generally speaking the same people are capitalists and the same people workers as before the Nazi revolution. But at the same time the State, which is simply the Nazi Party, is in control of everything. It controls investment, raw materials, rates of interest, working hours, wages. The factory owner still owns his factory, but he is for practical purposes reduced to the status of a manager. Everyone is in effect a State employee, though the salaries vary very greatly. The mere efficiency of such a system, the elimination of waste and obstruction, is obvious. In seven years it has built up the most powerful war machine the world has ever seen. *But the idea underlying Fascism is irreconcilably different from that which underlies Socialism.* Socialism aims, ultimately, at a world-state of free and equal human beings. *It takes the equality of human rights for granted. Nazism assumes just the opposite.* The driving force behind the Nazi movement is the belief in human inequality, the superiority of Germans to all other races, the right of Germany to rule the world. Outside the German Reich it does not recognize any obligations."
