NOTE: Apologies to newer Patreon backers, this video was made a while ago and so the list at the end is not up to date! Missing is: Andy Garcia.
2015's METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN opens in Cyprus, where a conflict has continued to smolder since 1974. In this video, as part two of my analysis of the importance of setting to MGSV at large, we take a deep dive into the history of Cyprus, mainly focusing on the 20th Century, in order to examine how the island, with its unique blend of cultures and long history, fits into MGSV's wider themes.
Along the way, we also wind up discussing the Greek Civil War that followed World War 2, and how the Truman Doctrine was issued in response. As a result, a 'new kind of war' was born - one that was waged in respect to the new threat provided by nuclear weapons, and one that paved the way, to some degree, for the 21st Century's War on Terror.
Lastly, we also discuss Anglo-American internationalism, the empty promise of the Soviet system, and other 'groups above nations' like NATO and the United Nations. I put forward the controversial idea that such bodies are arguably, the direct descendants of colonialism, and use Mark Mazower's 'No Enchanted Palace' to speculate whether, specifically, the 'special relationship' created between America and the UK in the early 20th Century did not perpetuate a system of continued racial dominion.
As a last note, I did my best researching a lot of controversial and sensitive subjects here. I'm bound to get at least a few things slightly wrong, so please let me know in the comments if you notice anything amiss. The reason I call what I do 'essays' is because I don't consider myself a historian: this is my best attempt at interpreting history, totally subjectively, through the lens of MGSV.

Like pre-war Belgium. One country, two language groups / German meddling. Or pre-Revolutionary Belgium, one country, two religious people (Dutch were much more protestant in those days / French meddling. Like Ireland, Belgium is still not whole. Parts of Belgium are still in France (Hauts-de-France), Holland (Zeelandic Flanders en Limburg) and the entire country of Luxemburg. But there's zero animosity about these things. People don't care. And in case of Luxemburg, Belgium wants an independent Luxemburg as it's a tax haven for rich Belgians. BeNeLux Union make these points moot anyway and the French can keep Northern France, we **really** don't want it :D

(Greek) Cypriot here. Excellent video really with neutral and deep looking research. I would have liked if you had covered more the incidents of 1964 and 1974 and how the British (along with USA) had the eventual split of the island planned with a full map long before it happened. All your points are correct and all the problems come from individual persons. There are good hearted people all around the world along with people that just want to see the world (and others) burn. Ask me anything, i'm a very open person and i have a few (Turkish) Cypriot friends as well. Lastly i want to thank Kojima for touching these subjects and Futurasound i'm waiting for your next video. Guys fuck the ivory tower & we can more or less dispose of the entire western philosophical tradition as far as I'm concerned, but to suggest you can learn just by staring at the absolute avalanche of bullshit that exists online is naive in the extreme. Even "critical thinking," the catch-all term we use to refer to "how to parse information" or maybe just "how to recognise propaganda," is now a mostly-bullshit concept. The information is all here, for sure, but the accessibility creates as many problems as it solves. I still prefer this to "the Academy" though, don't get me wrong.

I just thought Kojima picked Cyprus because of the David Bowie song "Move On" which features the lyric "Cyprus is my Island, when the going's rough, I would love to find you somewhere in a place like that". It makes sense since Bowie's music plays such a key role in MGSV (Man Who Sold The World, and Diamond Dogs)

I've met people there that you could say almost adopted me and helped me during that time and these events are very recent and painful for them. Even people my age grew up in families that had at least one missing person. It's ironically, a version of Phantom Pain for them. Unseen for most of the time but still there. 33:30 The implication of Japan's clause being put into the Treaty of Versailles is that *the status of sovereign warfare as a tool for racial inequality between the populations of countries like Cyprus or Afghanistan would have been at major, if not monumental danger.* The idea that civil war could be used as a tool to determine the *"purest, most rightful singular race for a country"* would also have been at a turning point, giving nations such as South Africa, Afghanistan, and even America a much better set of relations between the non United Nations-backed counties. As a result, both nuclear warfare and other forms of warfare would have been set to a much lower standard between the still unchecked agressions (lmfao) of these nations. No Afgan Conflict, no Belarus Conflict, no Vietnamese Conflict, no Cyprus Conflict. Without any political/religious/racial/insurgencies being *allowed* between these nations from this treaty's demand for freedom of equality, none of these wars would be deemed acceptable by the Warsaw Pact; as it would have been written with a much different intention, as ideological disagreements could not be deemed "acceptable cause for warfare". The basis of the Warsaw Pact is in ideological disagreements, in the same manner that the Japanese clause would have deemed unacceptable. Therefore, they wouldn't have happened, and if any of them did, it would have caused a much more monumental (and likely positive!) change in the politics of these nations than what we currently see.

The best video Ive seen on your channel, unity through national identity has always been hard to achieve because of ethnic identity, wether that ethnicity was distinguishable or not, just look at cyprus, yugoslavia and todays ukraine. Unity is something all nations and people should strive towards, but as we see ethnicity and foreign policy aggressive against nations with that ethnicity have long been causing much division and conflict throughout history. However, unity behind national identity has in many parts of the world transcended ethnicity, such is the case with todays US, Russia and pre yugoslav wars yugoslavia. In my eyes there are one of 2 main causes of ethnic conflict: ethnic groups being oppressed, provoked or threatened either directly or by foreign policy against nations with their ethnic majority, or such as the case was with cyprus, ethnic or national division being created when there is none there to weaken the unity and strength of those unified people and cause division. Nationalism, Religion, ethnicity and many other aspects of humanity are used and exploited in many instances to further the goals of ideology, powers and conspiracy as is the case with the conspiratorial view of history, but ironically their founding purpose is to unify. Nationalism and ethnic pride should never infringe or threaten the lives of innocence or be exploited that way, instead they should fulfill their purpose, that is to unify. Unfortunately, either by nationalist leaders or globalist conspiracy, that important and fundamental aspect of unity and freedom is forgotten, and thus conflict arises. Freedom, nationalism and unity is something you cant have without being willing to share it with or appealing to everyone else. And that is what true liberty through unity is.
