The Forgotten Nation That Shaped European Football Forever

HITC Sevens

Күн бұрын

The likes of England, Scotland, Italy, and Hungary are the countries that we tend to think of as having shaped the European game, along with the likes of Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich within the club game.
One nation and one team that rarely gets a mention is the short-lived Saar Protectorate and the former Bundesliga side FC Saarbrucken, whose impact upon the sport, and in general, has largely been forgotten.
So in this short documentary, HITC Sevens takes a look at the German state of Saarland, its impact upon the world's most popular sport, and how without them, we may not have a Champions League final to look forward to later this month.

That's the beauty/issue with being the people's channel - they've done many a video based on submissions, so it enables people to ask for things. I'm not saying its bad nor good - its just been part and parcel of this channel for as long as I can remember. To be fair, there's quite a few comments about this video compared to others.

My dad's a Saarländer. It's a special little region with a special little accent and a culture just between German and French. The oldest people still sometimes call the rest of Germany "the Reich" because of the political separations of the past ("Dahemm" (at home) vs "das Reich" (Germany but abroad)). But I really didn't know about the footballing history...

Saarland is also the region where French troops invaded Germany in 1939, while the Nazis were busy attacking Poland in the East. Although, upon conquering a couple kilometers and stumbling upon a lone MG nest, the French thought that'd be enough war for today, and retreated back to get crispy baguettes (and to get invaded by the Germans a year later).

Day 22:Please make a video about DINAMO BUCHAREST...The story of our club is a hard one...And you telling it can really help us a lot,our club is clinging to survival, and we raised 2 milion euros to try to save the club... Dinamo is one of the biggest clubs in Eastern Europe,it has 18 league titles and 13 domestic cup titles...It reached the Champions League Semi Final in 1984 after beating the holders of the trophy Hamburg...In the Semi Final they played against the great Liverpool side of the 80's...After the 89 revolution the club lost one of their greatest generation after their players where bought off by western clubs, similar to what happened to the clubs in East Germany that you already talked about...Corruption and neglect brought this giant of romanian football to it s knees...At the moment Dinamo is preety much the ONLY true historical side in Romania's top division...This team stood afloat thanks only to it's fans...In the summer some new spanish chiarman came and bought the club, brought players on huge contracts and left without paying them...The players just broke the contracts and the club accumulated even more debt...If the fans did not step in and accumulated 2 milion euros the club would have been dissolved...For anyone watching outside of Eastern Europe it might be hard to understand it s value...If u re English imagine Liverpool being dissolved...This club is OUR Liverpool, and it's stadium OUR cathedral...With all the fears of relegation, players leaving and managers coming in and leaving the club still managed to fight it's way to a Romanian cup Semi Final...Please,make one video about our story too...

Anyway, my ideas for a video; 1 - All time Basque v Catalan XIs, 2 - Scotland 1978 WC (We'll really shake them up when we win the World Cup), 3 - Matthias Sindelar (great story, I'm sure you know it, but lots of intrigue), 4 - Seven teams that play in other countries' leagues (not including Welsh teams in England, as the UK is the country). The club was TSV Hoffenheim. To my surprise, who was to enter the field but Mustapha Hadji, who I didn't realise was even still going. It was a dreadful game where neither team understood the concept of defending the wings. And the Saarbruckeners looked at me kinda funny as I cheered them on anyway.

The team I played for played in the Nord Rhine Westphalian league of West Germany (the last season of this league before reunification). We were invited down a couple of days before and shown round the ground and told of their fascinating history (but I have to admit my German wasn't quite up to understanding everything that was said), there was three of us Brits playing that day one Army lad, a civvy friend who was a chippy and myself like I said was serving in the RAF at the time. We lost the game quite heavily but it was a memory that will live long in the memory

Video idea: do a video on omonoia 1948. Basically the ultras of omonoia Nicosia (gate 9) created a new team that started from the Sunday leagues of Cyprus and by this time they are close to being promoted to the second tier.

Saarbrucken actually managed to reach the DFB Pokal semi-finals last season as well while being a 4th division side (first 4th division side ever to do so btw) !! They really love punching above their weight and it's absolutely brilliant to see.

I saw them play Frankfurt in the DFB-Pokal in the 90/91 season, when Frankfurt were almost good enough to win the German title, and they gave Stein, Bein and Möller a very good run for their money before losing 3-2 in extra time.

Great video, an amazing history! I suggest making a video of someone who truly loves the sport and dedicated a lifetime to it, with great success: FC Porto president, Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa! The club president with more titles in the world! 38 years leading FC Porto, with a strong relation to the players, managers and fans. Just hear what José Mourinho says about the man, as well as worldclass players like Deco, Vitor Baía, Hulk, Alex Sandro. Even the club supporters have a chant dedicated to the president. A larger than life character, and truly a fan of football and FC Porto. Cheers from Portugal!
