I'm 68 now, born and raised in Dorval, Que. I joined the neighborhood hockey team at 6. My Dad and I had to sign a Canadians contract which stated I was Habs property. This was 1957 and most kids were signed at this age [6] in most of Quebec. Our coaching was top notch with a lot of Junior A players as coaches. Even then, the Canadians had about 5-6 players not from Quebec, so it wasn't all Quebec players. Anyways, I thought you would like to see how it was run before the 12 teams and the draft.

Montreal drafted David Fischer two spots ahead of CLAUDE GIROUX. Ontario born and raised, but French and French speaking. Fischer never signed, and we all know what Giroux has done. Giroux said he dreamt of wearing the Habs sweater.

I'm in Quebec, so I can talk about it. They should not really care about it, but they for sure do care. The language barrier is a thing here, I'm not trying to hide it. I learned in my early years that being bilingual was the way to go (for me), but it is not the case for everybody. And if Montreal was to win a cup without anyone from Quebec in the lineup, I don't think it should matter. Then again, it's been 25 years already...

It's funny depending on who you listen to the media says it's the fans but if you listen to the fans they say it's the media however there was one incident where the fans in northern Quebec said that they would stop buying Molson beer if Montreal didn't have a French speaking coach or gm

I'm from Ottawa and here it's 50/50 French English with no real divide on culture or anything like that. The divide though is apparent in a big way as soon as you start getting out of the national capital area. Unilangual French speaking Québécois are frustrated with anybody that doesn't speak French and for good reason. I don't see a English coach in Montreal unless he is Scotty Bowman like as in the best coach that EVER lived

The french aspect of the Montreal Canadiens is important because the GM and the coach of that team are the ones that need to communicate with the fans who "own" the team.

One can also add in that Montreal hasn't had a Captain who is even Canadian, let alone a Quebecer, since 1999, so if that is the case then why should the organization care about the coach and GM speaking French, when the locker room leader doesn't. Montreal passes up on so many quality coaches simply because of the language they speak. I totally agree with you, if they are going to make a big deal about it, they should display that in how they form their team that they put on the ice.

As a Chicago fan I always love to see Illinois guys on our roster. I love Vinnie Hinostroza and loved Tommy Wingels. It hurt a lot too see Wingels go, and to Boston of all places. Wingels’ family lives blocks from my house and his sister was my brother’s teacher. He went to my elementary, middle, and high school too. Being from your home town can make a Bottom 6 fourth liner the most special player on the team. I’d love to see him come back or a guy like Dzingel or John Moore come in.

It is weird how the french speaking qualities are so important for the Gm/Coach but not the players. I think one of their biggest issues is scouting, they haven't drafted well in recent years. They've found a few decent players but most of them would be bottom six forwards and bottom pair D. Victor Mete was a great find but taking McCarron so early was bad, Hudon is no better then bottom six. Beaulieu didn't turn out very good, Juulsen may be ok but hard to say if he'd be a Top 4 D or bottom pairing. The last 10 drafts they hardly have any 1st round picks on their roster and the ones they do are either still young and hard to evaluate or turned out to underwhelming the fans. Best Prospect they've had in awhile was Sergachev and they traded him. It's not just Bergevin, the issues in drafting and developing were there before him and he hasn't done anything to fix it. Molson just went on record to say Bergeving is great at evaluating players, that was the funniest thing I heard all week.

The players that want to be known they learn French or at minimum try to. There's been many players that didn't speak French that ended up learning it in Montreal. It really helps if you have a French locker room.

Never was a big HABS fan even tho I'm from Montreal. They are drowning themselves with these moral rules. Get the best team available. Doesnt matter what language they speak. The new GM or coach would just have to learn a couple of words in french ( bonjour ). The french media and the fans will be so happy Lmao. PS: over his long career in MTL markov didnt speak in french once and fans loved him.

French speaking quebecer here. To my opinion, the reasonable position is in between. Not caring at all about the language of players is clearly not the right thing to do, and none english-speaking person can truly understand this, unless you experienced the reality of being a linguistic minority on an english speaking continent. It has to do with the sense of belonging of the fan base towards their team, which (sadly or not) doesn't depend only on winning games and championship. On the other hand, in today's NHL, a GM can't be blinded by this fact, and considering building a team only with french speaking players : its a nonsense. With players from all around the world, talent is dispersed everywhere and is not only concentrated in eastern canada, like it has been long time ago. It is a reality. So to me, the solution is to have a little core of french speaking player all the time, that relates more with the french fanbase. Guys like Drouin, Danault, Deslauriers and Hudon do that. Without being the top players of the team, they build a specific relations with the local media and the fan base by speaking french, which is positive for everyone. 4 players on the whole team isn't exagerated in my mind. We just need to be careful to not be blind by this fact, and not priorizing a french-speaking player at the draft for instance, in circumstances where we should not (remember Louis Leblanc).

At this point, in 2018, the insistence on French in the Habs brass in purely a media thing in Quebec. Franco sports media in Quebec is very much a part of the language politics in the province. In their minds, they need to keep the team "straight" and accountable. They have always played a hard game of shaming the team's owners and brass. Historically, GM's and coaches have overwhelmingly been anglo and the players franco reflecting the upper class to lower class Quebec dynamic. By the late 70's when the sovereignty question started becoming important to the population we saw a shift. Bowman (coach) and Sam Pollock (GM) were gone and slowly it became a must to have both positions filled with French speakers. The Nordiques also played a huge role in this issue; the rivalry created a race to who gets the best French personnel. Today, years after the Nordiques have left to Colorado, the race still stands except the rival is a phantom and it leaves the Canadiens imprisoned in ideology.

I'm really happy we got Drouin, and i love Hudon, but we shouldn't go exclusively for French Canadian kids, just get the best guy you can, and hurray if he's from QC or Montréal. As for the coach/GM, Scotty Bowman was the best coach we ever had and no one ever cared he was an anglophone, and we could get a 14 year old Nepalese kid to replace Bergevin and I'd be happy at this point

The "French Connection" is a Media creation that started in the early 2000s. If you look at the habs history, you will quickly realize that the Best Gm ever was an Anglophone (Sam Pollock). The best coach ever was also an Anglophone ( Scotty Bowman). As a Francophone Montrealer, I can tell you that fans want a winning team and not a french speaking team. This is the fix Montreal is in. Your coach and GM are ambassadors for the team to city and surrounding areas. Fans want to hear from the head coach and GM about their team. Using interpreters gets old pretty fast so that's out, so what else can the Canadiens do but continue to hire French speaking personnel.

As a Ranger fan from New York I fondly remember when the Montreal Canadiens were the "Flying Frenchmen". It was an image and a unique identify that symbolized the speed, skill, finesse, and domination of those great Canadien teams that were loaded with French Canadian players from Quebec. It made the Canadiens different from all of the other teams in the NHL. There were stories of guys like Guy Lafleur who grew up in Quebec dreaming of one day playing for the Habs and continuing the "Flying Frenchmen" mystique. Now unfortunately the only thing that differentiates the Canadiens from the other NHL franchises is their past. Nowadays the Canadiens are just like any team in the league. There is nothing special about the Canadiens anymore.

On a somewhat related topic, there’s only 34 Russians in the nhl but so many of them are high quality players. Kucherov, Malkin, Ovechkin, Kuznetsov and Panarin are the top 5 Russians this year. 3 of those 5 players should get hart trophy consideration, and when you look at Panarin’s points relative to his teammates you could make an argument for him as well. Then you have young studs like Tarasenko, Dadonov, Sergachev, Provorov etc. So many quality Russians leading their teams in goals, points or ice time. To say nothing of goalies like Bobrovsky and Vasilevskiy.

Interesting topic. When you think about it what Russian is there that plays on a 4th line in the NHL? Maybe the game is so different over there that only the high-end skill guys will make it. It could be that they don't teach players to become role players, it's either 1st liner or bust.

Dark Magician The only one I can think of is Yakupov and he was drafted number one overall. Speaking of which, I’m from Barrie Ontario. We have two Russian import players on the Colts. Even Zaitsev leads my favourite team (leafs) in ice time.

I'm not Quebecois but honestly I like the idea of them having a predominantly french organization, it's what makes them the Habs. I get the whole "get the best you can" argument but I think in this case (and a lot of cases) you can't look past the cultural and emotional implications that come with something like this. I just don't buy for a second that it wouldn't be sweeter for Quebec to win with a mostly french team than with a bunch of people who couldn't care less about the culture of Quebec. Turning everything into a soulless commodity is abhorrent to me. I agree with your points in this video though Shannon, great stuff as usual.

I know it's early in the season, but it seems obvious that there's a wind of change blowing in Montreal right now. I'd like you to discuss the change in playing style since last year and the new "attitude" . Also, sometimes the name doesn't dictate the language. Beaulieu didn't speak a word of French, however, Paul Byron and Mathew Peca do. And frankly, I was very happy to see some French speaking swiss guys back in the later 00's. But in the end, I think pride is the most important thing. French player often have more of it playing in Montreal, but it's not an automatic.

At that time, SI wrote the Candiens passed up on some French players in the draft and they started off decent, Chelios was one player and I think Tom Kurvers was one of those players. It's media driven, fans don't and shouldn't care about a coach or a GM speaking french, the fact that Montreal only won 1 Stanley Cup with a francophone GM and coach in the last 30 years shows it doesn't work. Hire the best available candidate no matter where they are from, that obsession with french speaking management is ridiculous and is only hurting the team and the fans
@Mellotron63
@Mellotron63 6 жыл бұрын
I think most of it is either media driven or politics unfortunately. I can understand why they feel the need to have French coach's and gms since a lot of the media in Quebec probably can't report in another language. I wouldn't be surprised if there are French speaking Quebecers who feel the need to have a French coach/gm as well. Because at the end of the day communication is important and you wouldn't be able to reach a large portion of your fan base if you couldn't communicate with them. But on the other hand the only thing Montreal fans should understand is winning. I do believe it's a bit much since we have won in the past without French coach's and gms. And as a fan base, organization, and even province I feel it makes us an easy target for ridicule. Quebec is a beautiful province with a lot of great people, so it's unfortunate that other Canadians will think less of Quebec because of our politics. Not saying everyone does this, I've just had my share of experiences.

The legendary franchise francophone defenseman turned GM turned Canadian Liberal Senator explained it best in his ultimate advice to the actual Habs GM. In montreal, you can win in any togue but if you lose, people will not forgive you if you don't have french players and french staff... So you can clearly see that current management is simply edging their bets. The goal and the reason to exist of the organisation is to rake in entertainement dollards for Molson. And that is why the last cup has been won in Montreal... it will not come back lest they move the focus of the organization away from simply competing and being popular.

remember the drama over the possibility of Vincent LeCavalier moving to montreal all those years ago? smart move by Vincent to stay out of there. this team's been spinning it's wheels for years. yes the rehiring of an old coach is endemic of this but it is separate from the french question. It's admirable to want to focus on a league like the QMJHL but historically it's been weaker of the three leagues. last year Nico was the only first rounder from the Q I believe, (this year looks quite different thanks to Halifax mostly and that's due to import talent) The real prospect gold seems to be in the largely unexamined markets. Boston in particular really struck gold by focusing on the college pool. Tampa is having good results in lower tier russian leagues. lastly the pride question: will a team of Quebecois who grew up watching the habs play more passionately? this is a double edged sword. for as many who rise to the occasion, there are just as many who crumble under the pressure of hockey crazy markets like Toronto, Montreal, Edmonton. also, as a franco-ontarien who grew up very close to the Quebec border, I can tell you, kids grow up idolizing the habs outside of quebec. I watched in awe in 1993 when I was 10. and the number of great eastern ontario or northern ontario francophone players is immense. i bet a bunch of them are habs fans too. you can add the likes of Claude Giroux to that list of francophone studs

I'm from Montreal and do speak french as my native language. The thing is that most people here, myself included, don't really care bout. But we don't represent the average Quebecquer. The older generation is still stuck in the early 90s where the french and english were kinda after each other in Montreal. I asked my family the same question about the language and they all said to me that it's of the upmost importance. I can ask many younger guys, they don't give a damn. I really think it's because of a generational gap created by the divide between Canada and Quebec around the two independence referendum and the War Time Mesure Law that was enacted in the early seventies.

Is not necessary to have a french coach or GM in Montreal only if the team wins…In the other case, it will expose the person into a silly situation like when Randy Cunneyworth was coach of the canadiens. @The Hockey Guy just imagine how that could be a distraction if the next coach in Vancouver would only speak spanish…the guy will be annihilate by the media if he can’t make his team competitive. It is hard for someone to have correct view on this issue if you haven't been raised in Québec (french part) and don't know political history of Québec. You need to be aware of links between the team and the emancipation of Québécois. The team represented for a long time the hard battle that Québécois had to fight through to get rid of discrimination against them. The team showed that by fighting you way through unfairness (like Maurice Richard) and never abdicate that great things could be possible for Québécois. The french issue here is just a legacy of this era and is still relevant to this day.

Timmins wanted to draft John Carlson in 2009 but the draft was in Montreal and he said management felt extra pressure to draft a Quebecois. And yet they pass over some of those names on your board. It doesn't make sense to me. I like seeing local players and coaches succeed in Montreal, but the league is in such a state of parity these days that it's got to happen naturally, they can't try and force these things when every other team is having a hard enough time staying afloat as it is.

This is why they fired Therrien when they did and why Bergevin will keep his job until either a better French speaking candidate currently with another team becomes available or until Patrick Roy starts answering to Molson's calls.

Old article but here's my 2 cents. Sam Pollock wasn't French, not a bad manager. Drouin really crapped the bed in Montreal. Some guys can't stand the heat. He has multiple issues, I know. Bergevin's messed up with that move.

I'm a huge habs fan, and it's more the media that want french speaking coach's and gm's so they don't have to translate has often lol, but seriously, if a long time habs that doesn't speak french took one of the jobs, we would let him like let's say if Kirk Muller (captain Kirk!) wants to be head coach, we wouldn't bat an eye on this. Long time ago some canadian (and some europeens) players until the 80s learned a bit of french when they played in Québec (like Stastny in Québec or Gainey and Bowman in montréal)

I remember 2011-12 after the Canadiens fired Jacques Martin as coach early in the season and they promoted Randy Cunneyworth an American Assistant Coach who knew no French as Interim Head Coach. And Montreal media hated him and after the season the Habs fired him and brought in Therrien.

Montreal will never win again because they are stuck with this french language issue and because of it they will never hire the best GM and coach available, because of parity a winning team in the NHL today must hire the best staff that they possibly can and Montreal is limiting themselves, back in old days the french connection was an advantage for the Canadiens but today it is a real disadvantage, until the Canadiens realize that they must hire the best staff that they can regardless of language they will continue to flounder in the NHL,can't this team just hire a translator?,that would solve a lot of Montreal's problems right there. Bob.

I don't see how this discussion has anything to do with Toronto, different teams can have different reasons for their struggles. I think the main reason in Toronto was because the management always had a 'win now' mentality and tried to win by recruiting older vets because they didn't think the fans could stomach a full rebuild, rather than building themselves into a contender internally through the draft etc. The new regime in Toronto is certainly adopting a new approach, and I would argue it's going well for them (of course a cup is never guaranteed, but it looks like they actually have a window opening for the first time in a long time). Maybe with that said it is time for Montreal to try a new approach and try something new.

I live on Québec and I don't care about the language at all. I just want to see the Canadiens win a Cup ans that's not going to happen in the next few years. The problem in Québec with the language is like you said, 4 millions are not speaking english at all. Most of this pepole are old and they grew Up with the dynasty of the 70's when there was à lot of french player and management. For them, the solution of the Montréal problem is to get more french player because they won like that before. They are in that mentality still abd it is not Working! I think that Goeff Moulson continue to get à GM and coach who are french speaking is for that kind of pepole in Québec that are in the old mentality. Merci d'avoir lu!

I think Montreal just needs to go after fresh blood in the QMJHL. They need to just keep getting coached from the league until they find the right one. Could you imagine if they could have landed the Crosby Lottery. Crosby spoke French well and probably still can. Playing his Junior in Quebec and going to school there for those years you bet he can. Or even Toews who is a French guy from Manitoba... Yeah I lived in the Peg and yeah it's bilingual with one of the largest French communities outside of Quebec even with really big French festivals that rival some in Quebec City.

yes the population here wants the organization to speak French, but I think we don't really care at the same time. we were statistically the population (Quebeckers) that is the most complaining in the world lol, so Quebec will always find something to complain about but especially, ESPECIALLY about whatever happens to our team, its our religion! I think majority of Qc would prefer either past player of the team or French speaking GM and head coach but for the rest of the coach/managing staff we don't really care that much I think... but at the same time we wouldn't say no to a scotty bowman who don't care about speaking French but is finally gonna bring the 25th cup and more to the city/province (I prefer to say city because the city of Québec doesn't really like us since that game of the playoffs in the 80s and more because they lose their team when the nordiques moved to Denver lol), same thing for the players, the city AND the organization would select first a French speaking player over another guy if they have same talent and potential... like when we drafted Louis Leblanc instead of kreider because the draft was in Montreal. Leblanc could have been a superstar as it was said but they didn't really help him developing his abilities and talent and it was the end for him, and yet kreider is still of that top six of the rangers... I think every case is different when it comes to us in Montreal to be honest, every situation, whether coach gm or player, every situation will always be different especially when including French speaker in the equation

That stat that 4 million citizens in Quebec don't speak English in an bilingual and majority English speaking country is truly shocking to me. Being Swedish and living in a monolingual country i would consider myself bilingual in both Swedish and English, that fact that many French Canadians don't even grasp the majority language in their own country baffles me. I do understand history but just because you speak French at home should not make you monolingual when the majority of your countrymen only speak English.

This begs the question about the Randy Cunneyworth not being able to speak a word of french to the french press in Montreal..?? I don't think Montreal could win a Stanley Cup with a line-up full of french players, but being a coach or GM in Montreal you have to be able to speak and converse to the media in Montreal which is PREDOMINANTLY FRENCH!!!....you'd don't get a lot of press coverage from TSN or CBC but a lot more from RDS and TVA those guys do more of a in depth coverage for the team...
