Kudos to the architect that had the vision to melt all the existing lines and addition lines into a seamless plan. Donavan gets a lot of credit for executing the plan precisely. And the skillful cuts man gets credit for quickly recognizing that you can't get 121 3/4 inches out of a ten foot board! Nice hamming for the camera when you two did the sycronized trim assembly on the windows.

Architects purposely put those jogs in the outer walls like that to give the house character and make it seem like it's bigger than it really is. You guys putting the walls back to "straight" lines like this makes it feel like the straight walls of a double wide trailer-- architects always try to avoid that simple look; That's also why that "bay window" is there on the right-- it's only there to give that huge flat wall some dimension and breakup the long, flat, straight lines. They will even put fake dormers on the roof, just to make it look like it's a 2 story house from the road, but really it's just empty attic up there. lol... I've had to build a lot of them............... So on this front addition, typically: rather than making it come out flush to that wall, I would have made it come out 6" inches further passed the wall, just so that it puts another little jog into the look of the house, and breaks up the straight lines; It just makes it segmented, and have it's own little distinguished additional look to it. It still looks great how it is--- I just know that I've worked with enough architects, that they would have insisted on NOT going exactly flush with that other wall. But your house is big enough that it doesn't need these "fake tricks" to make it seem bigger. cheers

@@calholli But the design was pure garbage from not only the exterior but the Interior as well. Juts make it interesting but design is more than that.
@calholli
@calholli Жыл бұрын
@@envisionelectronics Yeah, most houses are just tract homes. I've built entire neighborhoods, block after block -- where there were only 7 different floor plans. Over 300 houses, and literally only 7 different designs, just repeated over and over. Some are mirrored or change the roof from gables to hips, or make the front porch taller, or maybe add some fake dormers on the roof, or add a bay window, ect. ect.. There are ways to hide the fact that you're using the same floor plans--- but you can still tell that the entire neighborhood is just cookie cutter houses. People love it though- they buy them up like crazy.

Watching this series from the beginning, my main takeaway is that Donavan has a huge wealth of knowledge and skill. He seems to know how to do just about everything on the house from framing to windows, doors, and siding, to trim, and more. Rare to find folks who are equally good at all those things.

You are spot on, but in addition he could probably do the electrical, plumbing, HVAC, concrete and all things in between. With experience comes the wisdom to know where your enjoyment of the work and level of necessary income balance out. Being able to focus on what you find interesting and enjoyable while making a living is a great place to be.

In a "most unusual way", I enjoy the vicarious thrill of watching two people experience the passions of my life. Companionship fellowship that induces superior Family dynamics, based on law - big time - thank you Lindsey for being a consummate practioner of the "glib tounge" that earns disposable income that helps build the expansive new compound.....not to mention my passion of shaping wood........ Yep, I bend trees for some one to sculpt from an urban log of the woven mullberry trees in my small front yard-several years down the road.......the heart wood is a beautiful pinkish red that has been my privilege to carve.......and just for fun on the "what a hoot" scale, my poppa totally taught me how to build your wood mill.... I was only a sawyer for the guy that shipped red and white oak - sawn to quarters - to Japan - he got rich and I continued....... And yes, at 72 orbits of life, I count you fortunate to have merged passions to such a glorious continuance....

You had a guillotine chopper! I just finished a bunch of Hardie plank siding, and we had a nibbler - $140 tool that mounts on a drill, and takes a 1/4" kerf. We did rips of 2'x8' soffit panels, so the nibbler is the only tool that is affordable to get it done. And you have an oscillating saw - I had forgotten I even have one of those.

@calholli
@calholli Жыл бұрын
meh.. It feels important to those who think it matters. Things like lining up your siding at the corners so that the match as the wrap around the corner--- it's not actually important at all and doesn't matter functionally. But it just gives it a more uniform look that some people have to have.

@@calholli Put me firmly in the 'it matters' category.
@calholli
@calholli Жыл бұрын
@@tuesboomer1623 Most people think that, but would you even have noticed if I didn't point out that the siding should be aligned? Most people don't even notice at all--- until someone tells them, and then they can't stand it, and can't un-see it. lol.. But before you point it out, it doesn't even occur to them-- because it's not actually important at all; It's just something that people tell you to think. It's interesting. Kinda like tile: Some people like it to have perfectly square lines, some like them staggered like stacking bricks, because it's easy to hide imperfections-- and some insist on them to be turned into a diamond pattern. Does any of it really matter or make any difference? No.

@@tuesboomer1623 That's where you're wrong, I couldn't care less about what people think, I do it my own way --- and I've ran a crew building houses for over a decade. You're the one following the crowd and worried about what people think and how it should look. lol.. You didn't know how it was supposed to look until I told you. Now you're attacking me because I told your there's another way. bwhahaah.. I guess I shouldn't try to help people open their mind-- it's just too much to ask apparently.
