Also worth mentioning that Bridget has an almost full set of heavy combat armor (she doesn't have the right arm). Doesn't matter if you're level 1 or 200, she will have it. REALLY good pick up for early game if you can get past all the gunners.

As a former Army Tanker let me throw my 2 cents in here. While some folks are thinking LT might mean Lieutenant Colonel or Lieutenant General, I don't think so. First of all, in the real world, all Generals are referred to as "General" with specific rankings use mostly for formal situations only. Lieutenant Colonels are referred to as either as Lieutenant Colonel or Colonel depending on the situation and Colonel in question (some Colonels are picky about their rank). In this case, I think your initial thought of Lieutenant is correct. I went back and read the computer entry again. As to why the Captain "sent word along to the LT, and he can decide" I think the Captain is delegating authority here. To me it sounds like the Captain really isn't interested in the cannery, that overall it won't be worth it. It's run by one guy, not a Raider gang. So the Captain probably sent word down to the LT that if he wants to take some troops over and take it he can with the Captain's approval, but it's not mission critical since they would need to find someone to run it after taking it. Just a thought.

I cannot believe the Gunners aren't a joinable faction in the game. They're organized, ruthless, and strategic. Their mercenary army is capable of taking and holding territory, conducting counterintelligence operations, and sustained, organized assaults. They're more than a match for any faction in the game, and it's quite disappointing that Bethesda chose to make them simple enemies to kill.

On one playthrough, I was minding my own business building on Finch Farm when my settlers went bonkers, running away, guns out. Turns out they didn't much care for the Gunners killing the brahmin. My two settlers with Fat Men took out the overpass Gunners and this caused most of the rest of the Gunners to come out of Hub City. I let my settlers take care of them. There were only two Gunners left inside all said and done. I have never seen settlers go that far away from a settlement before and I wasn't modded at all. I guess they just really liked those brahmin!

Learning about all the strategies the gunners have been using makes me think it wouldnt be to crazy to think that the gunners could've taken out the BOS by employing guerilla tacticts. Theirs obviously superior on the ground...

One thing always bothers me about the Gunners.... well, several things, but the big one is that they are mercenaries. Guns for hire, selling their services to the highest bidder. Sooooo.... who's paying them? I know Shoddycast characterised them as basically better dressed Raiders, but they're not. They wear uniforms, have a command structure, have very good armour, plenty of weapons, however, their operations don't seem to be aimed at making a profit. They are behaving like a military force, securing areas, dealing with threats, gathering intelligence and if McCready is anything to go by, establishing themselves as the _only_ mercenaries in the Commonwealth... but they're not for hire. So who is footing the bill, and it's a pretty big bill given the number of Gunners about, and what are their intentions?

Further to the north, near the coastal cottage on the same highway for that matter. There's another gunner outpost that almost always has a higher rank gunner, a sentry bot, and an assaultron in my experience. When you finally clear it out, the equipment seems to suggest that its a listening post.

Whenever I want to do a sneak attack of Hub City, I go up to the section of Finch Farm on the overpass and snipe from there. I also set up some turrets there in case a gunner happens to wander close enough for them to spot. If you have a companion with you, there's a chance they may teleport over to the other side of the overpass, and you can command them to start a fight from there.

Thanks to you, Ox, I can never get board with this game....I use your videos to show me something I haven't found or to remind of some place that my new guy has not been to yet....

this is one thing about the game that drives me nuts. it's the ranking structure it is all screwed up. I think the people at Bethesda wanted to change it for the other military factions and keep the MM. I think LT. Ryan might actually be a LT Colonel. but like I said Bethesda may have change things around. very annoying for a retired army nco to deal with. For sure LT is referring to Lieutenant, but it might be that she is passing the info to an LT because he is the POC for whatever intel or strategy department the Gunners may have. He doesn't necessarily outrank her, but his position in whatever department may make him someone she has to relay info to and he gets it to her actual superiors. I've seen it in our real-life military, well something similar anyways.

If the military general places a LT in command of an operation, then all personnel who are assigned to that operation report to the Commanding Officer the LT, regardless of actual rank. If you saw 'Saving Private Ryan', there is a scene where CPT Miller reports to CPL Henderson as PVT Ryan was under the CPL's command. Positional authority (for example, second in command of a unit) generally exceeds rank authority.

I do like the Gunners. One of the few actual threats to a high-level character, and rich rewards if you can catch the commanders unaware before they get into their power armour.

Having the Brotherhood arriving to the Commonwealth really breaks alot of encounters both if one has gotten rid of them or if one hasn't. I started a new campaign where I tried to make sure I have explored enough of the Commonwealth before I went on the quest that makes the Brotherhood arrive. My own story for my character is that, after securing most if not all of the settlements and the Castle with the Minutemen the Brotherhood arrives and finds a already organised community under the guard of Minute men. This gives them pause but they still take over the airport and sets up their operations. It is a pity that this wasn't part of the main game. If your character either was or wasn't the General of the Minutemen the Brotherhood would react differently towards you and the Commonwealth. Open warfare with the militia that has the people's support would not look good for the Brotherhood and could makes the leadership look bad. Great vid Oxhorn. Your content has made me interested in playing Fallout 4, and in a different way than when I first bought it:)

If you have a rifle with a good scope and some sort of jetpack, you can use the third floor of a ruined house that's about two hundred yards to the east to pick off the gunners, and the distance gives you time to wait out searches before getting back to melon popping.

If you are trying to be semi-stealthy taking the area. It is better to do it from the top down coming from the direction of Finch Farm. Just get on the over pass at Finch Farm, and you can snipe the gunner with the rocket launcher. Then after killing the rocket launcher jet pack over and snipe the rest on the overpass. From there you can snipe the ones in the camp. Alternatively You can climb up to the roof of steelworks and snipe the ones on the overpass from the cat walks at the steelworks. You can then jet pack over from the steel works to the overpass. I usually play a sniper character, and I have found having higher elevation than the enemy helps a whole bunch.

I cleared this area at night with a stealth character, the only part that was hard was the bot, she was hiding inside the subway car and she spotted me well outside the usual aggro range of the POI. I needed to clear it so I could use the overpass to snipe the roof guards at Saugus. now I have to go back and get all those notes you found.

Another option is that captain Bridget meant Lt.Colonel , someone who would be above a captain, and would probably be the one that coordinates information for their Colonel who might be the person in charge of the entire commonwealth area for the Gunners. That is assuming the gunners have that level of power and that large of an operation.

I'm assuming that Lt. does in fact stand for Lieutenant, but rather than claim that Lt. is higher than captain (which doesn't even work because Lt. Ryan reported to Captain Wes), I think that Lt. is actually lower rank. What's going on here is that Lt. Ryan is in charge of certain covert ops, and as such Cap. Bridget reports to him regarding these operations. I'm a former infantry Marine, and we had a saying: billet over rank. That means that the job you have (your billet) is more important than your rank. So sometimes Corporals would be placed in charge of Sergeants, just because the Srg. was working on something that the Corp. was in charge of. While that was avoided over all, it still happened, and if it's your job to be in charge of something then that's what you do. It might seem weird for a corporal (or Lt.) to be placed in charge of something that a Srg. (or captain) had to work on, but this video actually shows a perfect example of why that happens. People often work for different departments or detachments, and get promoted by different people or for different reasons. Here we see a Captain in charge of a large outpost, but the covert op being run by HQ is under the command of a Lt. from HQ, so she leaves those decisions to him. Most likely there were plenty of other decisions that Lt. Ryan had no part of, and he couldn't have shown up and started ordering Capt. Bridget around. But ignoring Lt. Ryan's role as the guy in charge of that specific operation would have made Captain Wes very angry.

It's awesome to see the settlers in the slog to take on the ironwork and the flinch take on the gunners then flatten the Super mutants.

(14:45) Clint is also a lieutenant. (14:50) Lieutenant is the lowest *officer* rank. It is above all of the enlisted ranks (private, corporal, sergeant). Since Wes at Gunner's Plaza is a Captain, Ryan would be second in command there. Bridgette would refer matters to Ryan that he had been placed in charge of coordinating, even though she outranks him.

If I'm playing a power armor character, what I usually do is skyrim my way up to the top of the overpass over Finch Farm. Then I use a jetpack to fly to the Gunners' overpass; it's a bit of a stretch, but it's do-able. From there, I take out the Gunner with the missile launcher as stealthily as possible, then make taking out the Fat Man a priority. From there, it's fairly easy to pick off the rest from the overpass.

It could also be that the Lt. Captain Bridget is referring to is a Lt. Colonel which would be a higher rank than either Wes or herself. Every once in a while military types will use that as shorthand for that rank. Could also be that this was a handoff to a lower ranked officer as in she didn't care and was willing to let a subordinate make the call if he had the troops. Honestly hope they do something in the next Fallout game with the Gunners. They seem like a former army unit from the war to survived intact and turned to mercenary work to keep itself going over the next two hundred years. It would explain the large amount of military hardware they have as well as their ability to recruit as they likely would have a stronghold somewhere that may very well be about as strong as anything an individual chapter of the Brotherhood of Steel might have.

Well, I usually clear Saugus Iron Works first, then snipe them from the catwalks around the furnace on the roof. It's best to lay a few mines about in case the Assaultron and one or two manage to evade.

In regards to the Gunners I think we're missing some information about the faction as a whole. I think Lieutenant Ryan is in fact a Lieutenant Colonel or Lieutenant General. Gunners can spawn with npc's titled as Brigadier. So I think it's possible there's an even higher command we haven't met.

You can go up on the outside of the iron works and snipe a lot of the gunners on the over pass and in the scrap yard. Two shoot gauze rifle with a long range recon scope will make quick work of them. Also very fun, but requires patients.

Hey governor of the commonwealth (Oxhorn) still really enjoying your channel and watched your 5 criteria for mods video again and I started again in fallout and took cheat mods out and just have customisation mods that don't give me an advantage (I'm on PS4) and did the same for skyrim and really enjoying more and the challange too. First Theory: I believe that LT thing may be a division of labour. LT Ryan is stationed at the Gunner HQ. Their job might be operational planning, logistics etc. It's an administrative job and they would have the best overview of the available resources such as specialists capable of running the factory. The Captain is out leading a patrol/encampment. Her job is to do her duties related to her posting. That is combat, patrols, scouting, entrenching etc. She has a field work focused command. LT Ryan might not be as useful in combat as a Patrol Captain, so they are in a lower rank, in order to avoid a chain of command problem. Second Theory: The word Lieutenant has historically been used to denote someone who is second-in-command. In that sense, Lieutenant Ryan may actually be the right-hand-person of the Leader and thus the second highest ranking officer in the Gunner's.

I keep mishearing "Dunwich Borers" as "Dunwich Horrors" and thinking I'm about to get a supernatural plot twist.

I was working on croup manor and when I was building and a vertibird crashed, then not five seconds later four cars exploded near libertaria so I had to go over there killed some of the raiders and trying to see what happens. THEN a random encounter spawned six rust Devils, and at the impact site two raiders survived. Then randomly a car blew up near nhaunt chapel. No reason, not a thing was there. This was god damb crazy.

Ox they could be referring to the Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) and shorting it to LT because they are not worried about the LTC coming there as the higher ups are probably further away and not close enough to check up upon them yet, much like the Enclave on the oil rig or the Brotherhood in the West before the two distinct splits that happened with the midwest and the east.

Wouldn't surprise me if the gunners are linked to some kind of enclave remnant. I could also imagine that there was an idea to make them a joinable faction very early in the design phase, but this was abandoned.

The Lieutenant might be an intelligence analyst (or gunner equivalent) and the Captain is going to consult with him before any firm decisions are made.

Captain Bridget's terminal: it might not be bridget's terminal. She might be there to read it and take action instead of her lieutenant. Let's assume that someone else is in charge of the camp, and wrote the logs + sent a message to the lieutenant. The lieutenant then reported to his superior (captain bridget) who was already patroling in the area. She than decided to go to hub city in order to check on all the logs herself, and come to a decision. But the most probable explanation would still be that bethesda messed up and assigned a captain NPC next to a terminal talking about reporting to a LT.

Could stand for lieutenant colonel which is higher than captain and major. O3 sometimes use it as slang for their direct superiors seeing captains are usually company commanders and LTC's are usually battalion commanders.

The reference to passing the query about the robots to the LT may not indicate a report to a superior but a request for assistance to a technical specialist.

The rank problem is not a problem at all Oxhorn. The captain didn't report to "LT", she has send a report. Probably about requiring IT support for this operation. See, for example in a regiment there are battalions usually commanded by Lieutenant Colonels and the regiment is commanded by Colonel. But regimental CP will also have CP Staff coded as S-1 to S-6 (I think). And for example an S-3 is the officer responsible for unit training (also training specialists) and that man can be anything from Lieutenant to Lieutenant Colonel (there are de-facto restrictions but in war time very few ppl care and in this case I doubt Gunners would keep to the rules that much). But the battalion command will constantly send their recon reports up the chain no matter what rank the person who is responsible for recon has in the CP. That could be a Lieutenant but battalion commander still HAS to send those reports to him. And in this case I believe it's not out of the question that this Captain has send a report on finding this important asset, to the person in Gunner HQ that is responsible for dealing with hi-tech problems as part of standard protocol. The only thing that's actually awkward in all this is the way the Captain has wrote it. Not the part about deciding. That lieutenant can very well be the final decider on such matters in the HQ, and after all functional and usable robots can be a strategic asset in the wasteland. The weird part is that if all that was true, she would refer to him by function, not rank (for example "I've send word to S-3..."). There can be (technically) up to 5 lieutenants in regimental CP. So just calling him an "LT" isn't practical. Unless there's only one. But it' still wouldn't be the usual way it's done. And she couldn't have meant Lieutenant Colonel because that abbreviates to L Col. That's all that comes to my mind.

Oh, I recently had to defend Finch Farm. Happens that not only Raiders attacked, but also those Gunners moved over hunting the brahmin and my caravan coming from the Slog brought half the guys from Saugus with him. Oh and then there is the Mr Gutsy on the road,

That's pretty incredible....We've got some major Gunner fans out there, might want to consider designing Gunner t-shirts. Anyway, in response to your video, this further strengthens my theory of the Gunners wanting to expand their territory/presence in correlation with Captain Wes tactical decisions....Cruz was needed to stay alive because should they managed to successfully take over Fallons and Hyde Park, he was to assumed a leadership position at one of the aforementioned locations, while Wes stayed at Gunners Plaza. This video also further evidenced that the Gunners prefer only their most capable men (and women) to take charge at other minor Gunner bases scattered throughout the Commonwealth....Gunners like Captain Bridget, Cruz (my assumption), Winlock and Barnes at "Mass Pike Interchange" and former minuteman Clint, fits that description. Afterall, what's the point of expanding their territory when they don't have the men like Cruz to defend it?

Stealth works better if you snipe from the hill near Dunwich Borers. You can hit targets on the overpass and on the walls, and you can pick off the assaultron when it runs out the "front" entrance.

Maybe the L.T. manages the Gunners who are skilled in tech and stuff

I'm pretty sure the ranks you see when targeting gunners reflect the level of difficulty of that enemy, which adapts to the level of your character, but the ranks mentioned in the Lore are pre-scripted. This leads to these discontinuities when a Captain (levelled enemy) reports to a Lieutenant (scripted lore). If you arrived at a lower level you might well have found a Sargent or Corporal in command. I did notice in the Gunners plaza video there were like 20 Captains and one Sargent.

Ox there is a mod called In Plain Sight that states the Gunners are a portion of re-branded Enclave that would be interesting if it was true. I also think a play through of that mod would make a good Stream.

Oxhorn, I'd like to see you cover why the Gunners attacked Quincy. I think the ambush of Gunners outside of Fallon's and GNN could have been by Minutemen which could explain why they took it down. They could have been attacked because the Minutemen are hostile to mercenaries (Preston sure hates it when you take money) or it could have been an attack reminiscent of the problems plaguing the Minutemen prior to Quincy where like James Wire they started taking to general raiding (and attacking mercenaries lies in the moral gray area that those like Wire slipped into first before going full blown raider). After all, take the Institute mission outside of Graygarden for example where you recover the physics genius to help with Phase 3. If you arrive you find Minutemen there (unless you haven't met the Minutemen, then you ironically find Gunners). The local Minuteman gives you two options, (1) storm the house to kill the Institute reps or (2) set up outside and flush them out. If you pick option 2 he says no. If you tell him "that's an order" he laughs and says, "this isn't a military" and considers the idea of you giving him an order ridiculous. This lack of order and structure exists while rebuilding the Minutemen and you are told was worse prior to Quincy. The Gunners are about acquiring areas of strategic importance, controlling (directly or through espionage or deal making like how Barnes says they leave McCready alone to avoid conflict with Goodneighbor) the security situation, acquiring resources, and making money. Quincy smacks of the personal. There are no areas of Gunner conquest where bodies were burned in the streets and people massacred except Quincy. Raiders do that. Gunners fight for money or when other options aren't available. After all, the two main commanders at Quincy are locals, Clint who is a Minuteman they recruited and Tessa who is a raider they recruited. I think a Minuteman ambush on the Gunners may be the best explanation for Quincy, either ordered as a mission to clear out mercenaries or as an example of the decay of the Minutemen where rogue members attack with raider intent and Minuteman justifications.

My theory is that the Gunners dwell from Vault 75. Or they have ties to the Enclave Remnants. It still feels like there was something more to them than just another Raider type. Like Bethesta had other plans for them.

Oxhorn, LT Ryan has probably the Lieutenant Colonel rank, it's just above the Captain's, and it also explains and makes more sense, because the Gunners uses USA Army Ranks and Chain of command, like the brotherhood out on the west coast does. but it doesn't explain how captain Wes is the head of the whole operation in Boston.

I'm surprised that the Gunners don't see Longneck Luckowski's Cannery as a source of income. If they can get hunting teams assembled to bring down creatures like mirelurks, yao guay, mole rats, and radscorpions for food processing. But I guess that isn't the goal of this mercenary group. And having forward operations centers at Hub City Auto Wreckers and Galaxy News Network Studios would give them a huge advantage over other factions. They could use those locations as a means to stage invasions, run covert ops, and perform recon missions on the various locations and factions of the greater Boston area. Not a bad plan but they're mercenaries. Who are they doing this for, I wonder? Nobody really knows…

You can gain entry climbing the wall at the same point you exited the compound, near that exterior shed. It isn't the best spot, as I found myself quickly spotted and under too many guns to hold the ground. Still, I was able to get a couple sniper kills before having to run. The Hub proved a hard nut to crack for my primarily sneak and shoot character. After seeing your troubles, I don't feel as badly about the stim-packs I spent there.
