This system is very flawed. The valve reduces the flow, which prevents all particulates from being pulled out of the oil pan with the oil.

I used to have a Citroën SM. Its oil drain plug was so large that it used a 17mm hex key, same as a Volkswagen Beetle’s transaxle plug. The threads were like 25mm. The oil dumped in only a few seconds. The Citroën transaxle was the same design as on DS/ID cars so it had more normal drain and fill plugs like 21mm hex head, 14mm threads.

@heathjones7002
@heathjones7002 4 жыл бұрын
I looked at the Fumoto valve before I made the Valvo Max purchase. 2 things that made me go with Valvo Max. 1: Looked like the Fumoto was brass, I was worried that it would be susceptible to damage from road debris being soft metal. 2: I was concerned that the lever might lose a pin or break off. Maybe not the case in actuality, but if I'm laying down $30, and traveling as much as I do. I don't take any chances. I also keep the original plug in the glovebox, wrench and 5 quarts of oil just in case.

Same here, been using Fumoto since 2005 or 2006, on total of 4 cars (two of them I don't own anymore). When I first learned about Fumoto I found that they sold a simple clip you could put around the lever to prevent it from being knocked open by accident. I tried it without the clip, and found the valve never opened by itself. Of course I only drive on the road, never do any off roading. So I never bothered installing that little clip :)

Same, and should I ever bring my car to the shop, they can change the oil as well with the fumoto valve. And somehow I am sure, that when I would use this valve, it would probably take me longer to find the that drainhose, than it would to remove the carter plug.

@nokieng6502

x2xtreme360 Subaru Outback (and other models I’m sure) has a top of the engine oil filter canister. Pop open the hood. To the right of the valve cover and next to the oil filler cap is the oil filter. Only issue is u cannot pre-fill the canister with fresh oil prior to installing like u can if the canister was screwed on from the bottom of the engine. Being top mounted it unscrews with no oil mess since all the oil that was in it has returned to the oil pan. I believe Porsche, BMW, and other cars have the same set up.

My wife's '18 FIT had a rock chip in the windshield and it cost $1600 to replace it when all was done because of the computer link to the mirrors through the video on the windshield. Wow! That device looks very similar to what some of us used on the Oshkosh Mk.48 LVS, along with other vehicles & equipment. Back in my military days, (25 years ago) it had no official nomenclature and certainly wasn't a standard issue item. Apparently, it was acquired by some of the NCO Marines working in the motorpool who had close ties with the machinists. They were very proactive and constantly thinking of ways to improvise tools & methods to enhance performance of equipment, as well as workshop efficiency. There were a lot of Navy Achievement Medals earned back then!

Before draining, make a little puncture hole on top of the oil filter, then drain, the oil filter will then drain out a little bit better 🚗🙂 i learned that Trick from changing oil on old Porsche 911s, the oil filter would make a nasty mess when u unscrew it if u didnt make a little pin hole on the top first so that air could get into the filter when u drain the oil from the engine, if ur really OCD let it drain overnite 😊

I agree! Depending on the car, the placement of the filter really sucks when you have to remove it. Basically side-mounted and near the exhaust manifold makes it impossible to not make a mess. The drain plug is always at the bottom and easy to control
@IIGrayfoxII
@IIGrayfoxII 6 жыл бұрын
Same. On my imp the filter is near the exhaust headers and that is where the mess comes from, normally a bit when unscrewing and the most when lowing the filter down, this is why I use a large rag to soak up all the oil.

I come up through the bottom and have someone hold a plastic grocery store bag by the handles. Modern car developers after watching this in their office:Hey what if we remove the hole for the oil so people can't change their oil.They will have to buy a new car every year(whole company applauses).
@JamesSmullins
@JamesSmullins 5 жыл бұрын
You joke, but there are plans to make oil changes done with a cartridge type system. No longer owner capable as you have to go to a dealer and it's hooked up to the cars computer so it has to be set and match as a oem part. Their excuse is people using the wrong oil and causing too many warranty issues.

Spyros M. Or do like they did with the transmission. When you go do your first transmission service on these newer cars you have to take them to the dealer because there isn’t a hole to put it in. There isn’t even a dipstick to check the fluid.

Srsly? Oil drains have been around for 100 years, give or take, though in the early days they stuck out more with a turn valve more similar to a water valve.

Installed one on my V6 4Runner a few years ago and between the Sure Drain Valve and the OEM oil filter placement with drain tray, I can do a fluid/filter change pretty quickly and with no mess. The 6 grease fittings on the axle take some time, but that is typically every other oil change.

I've had a FRAM suredrain system for years which is pretty much thw same thing and it works great and leaves no mess however if it has been left for a while it can be hard to get the dust cap off so it might be an idea to file down two sides of it or something so you can get a tool onto it to grip it better, but i definitely recommend it if you dont want oil pissing everywhere during an oil change

I just installed an easy drain valve and glad I did. I never wanna deal with a service station or oil change station ever again in my life. They use to put that bolt on so tight that it would be impossible to take it off and change your own oil. Every car on the planet should have one of these easy drain valves changing your oil takes 5 mins it’s truly an incredible item I’m glad I found. Don’t neglect your car and it will always treat you good the first thing is religiously change your oil even if you use full synthetic oil every 3,000 to 4,000 miles. This makes makes changing your oil a snap.

That's an interesting idea. I wonder if it could be used in the situation where one has stripped the threads in the pan. Normal approach is a new pan, since the depth of the threads may not be enough for a Helicoil. Instead of replacing the pan, you could try to glue this into place with JB weld. If it works, you've saved the cost of a new pan, if it doesn't work you have to replace the pan anyway....
@markypolo55
@markypolo55 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, or go Metric instead ( in case of a SAE thread), or SAE in case of a Metric bolt.The difference in size is minuscule and only removes small amount of material. Of course, you are going to need the Tap and Die sets ( which may offset the cost of a new pan ( if you have to buy them).
@wildbill23c
@wildbill23c 6 жыл бұрын
For the cost of a replacement engine just buy a new oil pan, far cheaper than an engine replacement wondering if your attempted JB weld repair will or will not work LOL.

This kind of valve and cap system is called quick disconnect and comes from the aviation systems and it was used since long time ago for the hydraulic systems for example. The quick connect and disconnect valve and cap fixture is used for testing the hydraulic systems trough a ground pressure source. Net fixture now exported for the automotive industry

A few issues to watch out for. First is the valve isn't as free-flowing as removing the original drain plug so if there is sludge or metal filings, they won't come out as easily. On that note, most OEM plugs have a magnetic end which pulls fine metal out of the oil. Other point is many mechanics and "lube and go" shops won't touch a third party drain plug for fear of being blamed for leakage. I have a fumoto petcock valve on my car for over 8 years, it works great, never leaks, but I don't have the diagnostic of a magnetic plug and I can't find a shop willing to change the oil as an option to doing it myself.
