As you probably know, Dan Lloyd doesn’t do much cycling these days, but we finally managed to convince him back on the bike to film a CX bike vs e-bike challenge… only for him to crash and break his ankle! Over the handlebars with both hands scraped and bandaged, writing wrist sprained, a nasty scar, and a head somehow unscathed thanks to a helmet. I felt like a walking pair of chopsticks for a few days. Speedy recover, Dan!

As a result of a crash my right calf muscle was cut by the front big chain ring. Ended up with stitches and kissing riding by by for a few months.

My wife and I send our deepest condolences to Prof. Louis Passfield's family and friends...what sad and shocking news, we enjoyed his segments on GCN and he will certainly be missed by all who knew him. As for the show itself, what can I say other that you (Simon) and Dan are never allowed to retire from GCN...never. I enjoy the entire cast of GNC, don't get me wrong...but you two guys are absolutely fantastic when you host the GNC Show. You’re like Abbott and Costello, Martin and Lewis, Ralph and Ed, Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd, R2D2 and C3PO, Woody and Buzz Lightyear, blah blah blah and blah blah…well…you get the picture. Anyway, here’s to wishing Dan a full and speedy recovery so we can eventually see who wins the race…breaking an ankle certainly is not enough to get him out of the challenge for good. Caption Competition: “oh look…a penny!!” OK, admittedly that wasn’t very good, but making some sort of comment relating to Dan’s ankle is just too easy.

I would love the idea of a cycling themed decathlon .Downhill ,cross country , road riding ,gravel, time trial , crit racing, BMX, hill climbing, Enduro, and Vella drone.A well rounded cyclist who was able to do it all and would be the best cyclist in the world!

GWS, Dan. Got knocked off earlier this year, and damaged my ribs .... took nearly 6 weeks before I was half normal again .. was 3 weeks before I could get out of bed on my own ... you don't appreciate quite how much the body does until you don't have it.

First, really sad to hear the passing of Prof. Louis Passfield. My condolences and prayers to family and friends. Second, I really feel bad for Dan. I can't help but feeling bad after seeing him curled up on the ground next to his bike at 3:56. Having dealt with knee injury myself due to skiing accident, I can fully relate. Speedy recovery and hopefully he'll get back on the bike again (I know I need to get more time in the saddle myself). Also, I find it interesting just how pervasive this whole "Black Friday" thing has gotten. Considering it was basically an American thing since "Black Friday" is the day after Thanksgiving (which is always on Thursday) here in the US and is often considered the "unofficial" start of the Christmas shopping season. I find it interesting how many places that don't have a Thanksgiving like we have in the US and still have "Black Friday" sales and the like. Not a criticism, just an interesting observation.

I truly hurt for Dan and I do send all cheery wishes for a speedy recovery. And no knock and no joke but this is why I stick with flats, flats, flats all the time right now, not that I'm afraid of cleats, just that I feel just a bit safer with flat pedals. And just the other day at a fastfood restaurant on a rainy day, I pulled up to the door and sort of happily came to a stop and tipped the bike before I put down my left foot when, whoa, the outdoor tiles were surprisingly slick and my foot almost slipped out from under me. Yet fortunately there was just slippage before the shoe tread gripped the tiles. Still, yikes, it was just a stop for a small snack en route home from work, nothing worth an injury or whatever. Truly, we have to always be careful, especially in the cold when a rush to get inside could cause something unfortunate.

GCN Tech has the Bike Vault. I think the GCN Show needs to have the Library of Hacks. No need for a Library of Bodges. A Library of Hacks would be a great resource for cyclists to use for situations they may find themselves in. A few suggested categories; Got me home, 3-D Printed, Clothing, and Storage/Transportation. To qualify for the library the hack must have a minimum of 95% votes as a hack. No zip-ties allowed! Ride to the level of your smile.

I work as a radiology technician in the local ER, and this just confirms my observation; Ever since the dawn of ebikes more and more elderly people come in with broken hips, wrists and ankles.

@@gcn Fair point Well I only get the see people who binned theirs.... So that's an observation bias. But just from gut feeling, a would assume so. It gets (older) people out and about, so a big physical but also social advantage. Although i do think its a shame when i see load of adolecent kids on ebikes, as where before they'd just use a crappy old citybike (netherlands, we all cycle).

Get well soon Dan. Did the same thing On a mountain bike in Cwmcarn. Pushed past my comfort zone, things got a bit squirrely. I went to put my foot down, caught my toe and it snapped the back off my ankle. Fortunately no issues with tendons. Hopefully a speedy recovery 👍

I feel you Dan! I've been off for 6 weeks so far, with at least 2 more weeks to go. I've has surgery to fuse my cervical spine from C3-C6. I had a massive prolapse that had calcified and was compressing 70% of my spinal cord. Surgeon said I should have been paralysed at that rate, but I managed an imperial century 3 days before the surgery to hold me over until I could ride again. 6 weeks so far living in a cervical collar that only comes off when I eat or shower. Hate it. I am really looking forward to getting on the bike again in 16 days! (I hope, doc will decide Dec 1st)

Good luck with the removery. I managed to rupture my ATFL and PTFL as well as chipping the ankle a couple of years ago during lockdown. Misdiagnosed as a grade 1 sprain until an MRI showed the real damage. Specialist said I'd have been better off having broken the ankle!
