IMHO Steve Hackett was such a huge but underrated part of the magic to their sound.

Absolutely! Steve was a brilliant and integral part of Genesis! He was replaced by an American with permed hair, named Darryl Stuermer, who had none of the nuances of Steve Hackett's technique. Such a freaking shame!

@Rodzilla I hear you. But he did do a good job even though in later years, retrospectively, the sound was not as integral or interwoven like Steve. But don't blame him. He stepped in and did a solid job in guitar and bass.

Ant was extraordinary in early Genesis. His playing on Trespass was outstanding. Steve fell right into step, NOT copying Ant's sounds or style, but he had the same sensibilities and talent. What transpired from there on out was truly brilliant! By Nursery Crime, they had found their niche and it only got better and better. Once Phil joined, they were a force to be reckoned with! It still brings me too many goosebumps after all of these years!

Be sure to check an Ant Phillips piece called 'F Sharp', which is basically the entire framework for The Musical Box. Yup, Ant basically wrote the foundation of that song and it would not exist if he hadn't.

@@bandfromtheband9445 Yeah, maybe second only to The Beatles. A fascinating tale spanning 50 years of lineup and musical changes, and for 10 of the 11 members (RlP John Mayhew) to all be on good terms and/or best friends is absolutely extraordinary. Something you will not see with ANY other band. And when Mayhew passed away about 35 years after being dismissed from the band after one album (Trespass in 1970), Tony Banks posted something very nice about him on the Genesis website, and even more extraordinarily, Steve Hackett posted a very sweet eulogy on his website, even though they never played together! They have always been friendly and respectful to each other, as important members of this very important band! All very classy guys. Possibly the only glaring issue is between Banks and Hackett, but Tony has even become more respectful of Hackett in the past decade or so, going so far as to say Hackett's Blood On The Rooftops is his favorite Genesis track. That may not make up for everything but that has to make Steve feel good. I always wanted to hear a Hackett/Phillips album, l think they could do something great together. Not too late!

When I visited London on one of my trips there, I checked out some of music related places like Charisma Records head office. I think it was on Wardour St. I walked aournd the front office and spoke to one of the staff there about the label and in particular Genesis. I asked the really knowledgeable person what the biggest selling Genesis album was up to that point. She asked me to turn around and look at the wall and there was ..And Then There Were Three. She told me this was not only their biggest seller, but the fastest seller upon release. Charisma had many artists on their label. Im certain I have not heard some of the bands even Van Der Graft Generator. She told me she saw Genesis at Sadler's Wells Theatre which is a great little venue in Islington, right near Angel Station where I stayed at the LSE dorms during the summer. I met Steve Hackett in Toronto at an in store record signing, very nice guy.

extremadrummer They probably think they evolved and cannot recapture that spirit. It's left to us, mere mortals, to see their brilliance as it always was. It happened to others. I remember Woody Allan saying he cannot watch his old movies, he gets embarrassed. He must be the only one. He took chances for sure and sometimes, rarely, it didn't work all that well, but when it did he was brilliant and a class above anybody else.

No more complete albums, just pop singles downloaded through itunes.

ThEiLLtechNICIAN You raise a very valid point. Many times I bought an lp for one song but listening to the whole album (changing tune was a hassle these days), I ended up discovering pieces that were rarely played on the radio and in the end, liking them more that the song I had bought the lp for. In the same situation today, I would have bought the one song I liked and never would have come to listen to the hidden gems.

ThEiLLtechNICIAN Exactly, I even miss some of the cool album art that was included in LPs and the process of putting the album on and going over the album cover inside and out looking for some of their creative images to accompany their album. Autotune is the death of talent, it's so prevalent in everything you hear today it's no wonder there is so few acts that can play live with the skill of bands such as Yes, Genesis, Fleetwood Mac and Pink Floyd.

It's absolutely astonishing that they wrote recorded 'Trespass' and 'Nursery Cryme' barely 20 years old. They're absolute masterpieces, and while there is definitely great music being made today, I frankly can't imagine a bunch of 20 year olds creating such epic musical compositions and, frankly, journeys, today. Not that the talent doesn't possibly exist, but such a wide array of talent in one single band is a rarity. On top of the record companies actually having the balls to release such experimental and different music, something I sincerely doubt would happen today.

I graduated high school in 75 and was not aware of the band until that time. I first heard nursery crime and became addicted to the band until Peter left. After wind and withering, I lost interest. I’ve learned more from watching this than I did from that time till this so thanks very much for putting us up.

I find it peculiar one thing. The "GENESIS LIVE" was a single LP. In those days, not anything beyong 30-40 minutes. They must've recorded a full concert from beginning to end. Which must've been at least 90 minutes.I wonder if the whole tape of it exists, since it's pulled from ONE concert and ONE concert hall. It can't be that bad, the rest of the concert. Would love to hear it all in sequence. Of course with Peters in between tunes banters and chatter with the hecklers of the audience. Almost a stand-up comedy routine.

Yeah, but today, the tapes of the whole show must still exist. It's no problem cramming it all in into one CD even, and definitely not a download problem, or Spotify, iTunes release of course. I mean, the rest of it, not the entire gig again, in that case, we have that already. It would be fun though.

Phil Collins is an underrated drummer (not by musicians), some people don't even know he can play the drums, they think he's a singer. He is a good harmoniser but is a bit lightweight vocally. As a drummer he is world class.

Oh man, the end of this is a heartbreaker, where you can *almost* see, at the time, a window for the 5 of them to do something together (barring Tony, who says he is not interested!). The killer is Phil... seeing how things have turned out. He says yes, instantly, but only if he plays drums..."I've got no interest in singing". That is such a heavy comment l am not sure l want to try to unpack it completely...it does make one pause to think about what it meant for him to take over as the singer, which was a *Herculean* task. It was the best decision they could have made as a replacement for Peter, but l think the sacrifice Phil made as a drummer was always a regret for him. And now, not being able to drum at all, in the band he spent his life drumming for, must be devastating. I believe that is tied to his insistence that his son play drums on this 2021 tour. Not only is Nic a drummer totally suited to the material, l think that is a deep connection that Phil needs, like he can almost see himself playing onstage. Wow, sorry, a little armchair psychoanalysis there. The last thing l will say...if, at the very last upcoming Genesis show, in the UK, l believe... for the very last song they will ever play together, which will be Carpet Crawlers, if Peter does not show up to sing that with Phil something in the universe is terribly, terribly wrong. Or maybe not such a great idea, l think everyone in the building would dissolve into a pool of tears.

Great comment. I thought it would've been a good idea to have the double drums on the last tour with Nick on permanent drums and Simon on percussion and backing vocals alongside the other two backing vocalists , and (as Phil used to do when there was space for him to play ) play alongside Simon on another kit during the long instrumental passages. Just a thought.

This was from 1998 when this box set came out. VH1 showed this docu in conjunction with the set being released. I remember buying the box set for £40 when it was first released and was made up listening to a well recorded lamb concert, instead of the hissy bootlegs that had gone before.

"Genesis Live"...certainly among one of the best live albums ever. That album was my introduction to the Gabriel era in 1986, when I was 23 years old. I was very familiar with the band as it was at that time...but was completely unaware of that earlier music. Listening to that album blew my mind. I was familiar with and a fan of "technical" music...Rush, Queen, Yes, ELP, Tull, etc...but I'd never heard anything quite like that. At the end of this video...Phil is up for a reunion and would be quite happy to just play the drums. Steve would certainly show up...the problem is that Peter absolutely cannot stand Tony anymore. It didn't happen because of that. Too bad...much too late now.

Even though the core of the music writing seems to have been Banks/Rutherford, and then Collins added on - the heart of the band must have been the love/hate friendship of Tony and Peter. PeterG is the only one who could get TonyB to blow sparks. That in turn creates top art. It's no fun for the actors in the vortex, but the rest of the world benefits from the result. They all had high points after the split: Genesis did some decent albums after Peter and SteveH; Hackett played some nice guitar solo; Peter G released 4-5 albums of rhythm and synth that sound like one long song, but never again did they transcend like those mid 70's masterpieces.

Nit-picking but funny that Rutherford and Gabriel both get the name of Anon wrong, adding the definite article (THE Anon). They took that from various poems and epigrams where the author is listed as Anon., which is a terrific band name. Richard McPhail *probably* thought of it 😜 . God bless that man.
