Step aboard The Ghan for the 2979km trip from Adelaide to Darwin via Australia's Red Centre - one of the world's great railway journeys. We travel in Gold Service for this incredible experience. Find out what the cabin is like, see highlights from the journey and see a selection of the silver service meals on offer.
The Ghan is the world's longest passenger train (excluding trains that also feature freight cars, such as the Auto Train in the USA). Today's train has 35 carriages hauled by two NR class diesels and is 876m long.
This is the first of two videos documenting my experience on The Ghan. In this video I travel from Adelaide to Alice Springs.
This video was filmed 11-12 October 2020 when there was no community transmission of COVID-19 in South Australia and the Northern Territory, so face masks were not required. A range of measures were in place on the train to minimise health risks including pre departure temperature checks and reduced capacities in the dining and lounge cars. Passengers were seated in a checkerboard layout in the dining car.
The second video, from Alice Springs to Darwin, is available here: • The Ghan experience | ...
The Ghan is operated by Journey Beyond Expeditions.

You made a comment about a question often asked. "Doesn't it get boring?" and your reply was something akin to a passenger on an ocean liner of the past. The seascape on a ship is always different but always the same (sort of) .. the similarities of watching an endless similar landscape passing by .. as in the ocean passing by, in calm waters and stormy seas, it almost forces you to be sociable and what a wonderful thing that is. I have done many ocean liner voyages most were 4-6 weeks long from NZ to UK and vice versa. They impacted on my life in so many ways, and I get the feeling of something like that in your videos. Difference is there is no outside deck to wander around on. Funny old world. Cheers

I have loved The Ghan since I was very little, and even though I have never rode it, I would ❤ to one day. The reason why I first heard of The Ghan was because one of my Mum's friends Dad loves trains, and he drove across Australia for years, filming trains across the country, and put all of the footage onto a DVD once he got all the footage he wanted of trains he wanted to see, and two clips of the The Ghan were among them. A short while longer, my parents discovered I had a huge interest in trains, and asked the person to make a copy of the DVD for me, and he happily did so, and when I first saw the Ghan train on the DVD, I instantly fell in love! The red NR class locomotive, and the stainless steel carriages which reminded me of the USA's Budd passenger cars, and the route it takes, Mmm-Mmm! Lovely!

Whqt would be great to see is The Ghan running from Melbourne to Darwin, overnight stay in Adelaide. That way we'd eliminate the need for The Overland. Melbourne to Darwin would be one of the worlds top 3 train trips behind The Orient Express & The Rocky Mountaineer.

@@rick_fortune this post focuses on The Ghan, Australia's best and most famous train journey. Nobody mentioned anything about the boring east west trip. I'd rather visit a giant ball of mud than a shithole like sydney. Melbourne is Australia's best city and its also the rail and transport hub of Australia. All trains should run through Melbourne, not through dirty shitholes!

As in the US, I'm sure that the tracks are maintained primarily for freight trains, and improving their condition for passenger comfort would be a costly program. The majority of people who travel long distances fly, though they miss out on the spectacular scenery! But The Ghan has done all they can to make you comfortable, and those meals looked wonderful.
@FromtheWindowSeat

Yes, true - it's mainly a freight line. Other than that, yes it was wonderful. :)

BUT the entire line was newly constructed 30 years ago (late 80’s) with modern techniques. To be honest it shouldn’t be in bad shape it’s not like it’s 100 years old with minimal maintenance.
@qjtvaddict
@qjtvaddict 2 жыл бұрын
That’s the problem most rail passengers do not travel long distances. Intercity rail doesn’t work without extensive suburban rail systems in the cities served and in between. The other conditions for success include speed or a combination of speed and density of areas served. India gets away with its network due to such a high volume of people. The French railways and Spanish ones were in decline before upgrading to high speed service. USA has literally zero intercity rail outside the NEC that is even useable as frequency is too terrible to use fully and the few trains that run are slow and unreliable therefore useless. China literally had to kick passenger trains off of freight lines in order to make them reliable that’s the real basis behind their high speed rail system to separate freight from passengers to the benefit of both.

Thank you so very much for sharing your journey. I have lived in Alice Springs for twelve years, from Brisbane. Each week I sit in my car or pull up with bicycle or walk adjacent to the railway line walkways and marvel at this almost one kilometre of travelling bewilderment of steel, luxury, comfort, freight, fellow travellers, and staff. I think about the people behind double-glazed windows staring back at me on the journey they made to be where they are. Inching their far away ways through the red centre. I will be so humbled later this week to standby the railway walkways of Alice Springs as The Ghan enters 0870, I will gesture with gratitude for knowing so much more about this mighty and legendary locomotive of travel and adventure and what makes it tick with service and hospitality on the inside. Thank you, watching your two videos on the stretch from Adelaide to Darwin has made my year. 😊🚊🎒📚🧳🚂🌏

I did this the year the Darwin section first opened, it was Brilliant, shame they don't still have the seats that recline for backpackers, it was a great way to see Australia. I did 10 trips although covering, Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Alice Springs, Darwin, Back to Alice Springs, then back to Adelaide for my trip to Sydney. Then I rejoined at Alice to go back to Adelaide and back to Perth. other than the lack of choice in the buffet car, it was great. Miss Australia and all the friends I made.

The Ghan has changed when I went on it in the early 70. The had seats for passengers. We had a wild time on the trip..
@KitKatess
@KitKatess 3 жыл бұрын
They still had normal passenger seats back in the 90's when I used to ride on it quite regularly. People would end up sleeping on the floor between the seats in the good old days! Look like it has changed a lot. I'd love to take another ride one day, travel in style.

Nicely done. Such a relaxed approach but with plenty of detail. Still pricey but the carriages are better than I had thought. Shame we have no Dome carriages in Australia. No mention of being able to transport your car as driving eastward from a mid point would be an adventure. Spending 10 days travelling across the top from Darwin to Cairns would certainly be an experience.

Thank you. Yes, dome carriages would be cool. Love those on Amtrak. I think the Motorail option is available again to take cars.
