The real lions of tsavo were maneless lions, but when the makers of this movie looked into using some of them, they were told by the trainers that lions of that kind were too wild and aggressive. So they used the regular maned lions instead.

I remember watching some animal planet or discovery type stuff a decade or few ago, but wasn't there a pair of brother lions in the wild more recently? Not man eaters but the normal driven off till they taken over the pride types. They tag teamed an old boss. Probably survived together as they were driven out as cubs from some other pride. Usually I think they kill all the male lions so maybe their daddy was king there and they just got old enough. Didn't find them in a search. I have't been keeping up. Instead I found something worse. Instead of a two pack I found a gang of 6 going around conquering shit. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a997lMZ-xqjchZs.html

"Have you ever failed?" "Only at life." Fun Fact: Only one scene uses an animatronic lion. All the other shots used two real-life lions named Bongo and Caeser. The same lions appeared in George Of The Jungle (1997). Gun Enthusiast Fact: The rifle used by Val Kilmer is a "Lee Speed" sporter, most likely in .303 caliber. The movie rifle is historically correct and most likely came from a South African movie prop supply house. BSA made these rifles from 1892 until at least the 1930s in .303, 7mm, and 8mm. BSA offered several different versions and options on these rifles. The term "Lee Speed" was used for commercial rifles. These rifles were mostly manufactured by the BSA Company, who also made Gov't rifles (Lee-Enfield Mk1 NoIII being the most common) and had the machinery in place to make sporting versions, appears to have a 26" barrel and is probably chambered for .303 British though the BSA was available in different calibers. The Lee-Speed was popular with British officers and other hunters who wanted a fine rifle, but couldn't afford the expensive double barrel rifles made by Purdy and others. The Lee-Speeds were also popular because they fired the British service round and had the same action as the Lee-Enfield bolt action rifle. In the primitive conditions of Africa in the late 19th and early 20th century, the British Army was often a source of supply for hunters and colonists, which would have included spare parts and ammo. There were not many Cabelas sitting around on the grasslands of Kenya. Historical Fact: The Lions of Tsavo were maneless, perhaps due to environmental variables, although maneless lions are not unique to Tsavo. Their taste for man may have been due to an outbreak of Rinderpest at the time, which may have depleted their normal prey. The legend surrounding this event is almost entirely based on the books written by Patterson which became run-away best sellers for their day, and made Patterson a good bit of money. It is possible, if not probable, the count of 140 deaths may have been trumped up a bit. Patterson certainly set himself up as the hero of the story, which certainly fit in with the Western notion of the "great white hunter" of the period. It is known that he killed both lions (both nearly nine feet long), and that they did indeed kill and eat humans. It is also possible that they did this because they may not have been able to kill and eat their normal prey as the jaws of the two show some sign of unusual dental disease. The hides now reside in the permanent collection of the Field Museum of Chicago, but the government of Kenya is moving to try to obtain the pair.

The Maneaters of Tsavo were real, and Col. Patterson was real. The book is a great read. How he kept from being killed early on is a miracle, because he made some fatal blunders that SHOULD have killed him. FWIW, the lions were mounted and are in the Chicago Field Museum. You can actually see the lions of Tsavo at the Field museum in Chicago. They are actually maneless and larger than other species of lions. On another note, a lion roar makes the air nearby feel as though it turned liquid. I heard one in Arizona and I didn't know I could feel fear the way I did until then. So watching men quake in fear at the sound of a lion seems very realistic to me.

Yeah, but the models at the museum are a travesty. Patterson turned their hides into rugs. When reassembling them, a lot of it had to be trimmed off due to the rough shape the pelts were in. As a result, the Tsavo Man-eaters are dramatically smaller than they were in life. You can see the hide stretched tightly over the model. Such a shame.

I remember seeing the movie and was terrified of the lions. Years later, I was in Chicago to see relatives and decided to go to the museum where the Tsavo Man-Eaters were housed. To this day, decades later, I still felt a sense of unease and dread looking into their eyes. I know the eyes were glass and all, but I felt like I was looking into the eyes of serial killers and only a thin piece of glass stood between them and me.

Also take into account, they're actually smaller now than they were in life. Patterson had them skinned into rugs initially, after he died and they were finally went through proper taxidermy, the pelts had shrunk, so again, they were bigger than they appear.

I've read the book Val Kilmer's character wrote: The Man-Eaters Of Tsavo, and one of the craziest things is that all the least believable parts (the lions ducking the decoy hospital; the sepoys being within 15 feet of the lion BUT NOT HITTING HIM) were the parts that really happened. That said...this has my favourite Michael Douglas line: "You're right...the Devil HAS come to Tsavo. I AM THE DEVIL."

Not only is this pretty closely based on the true story, but “Man-Eating Lions” i.e. lions attacking humans were actually a thing in that region of Africa for many decades after these events. That region (forget the name) is pretty ecologically fragile and frequently has droughts and other extreme weather both back then and even more so into the modern age. The wild animal populations are much smaller in this region than other comparable ones including the species that Lions usually prey on. It is theorized that the attacks stem largely from the fact the Lions in the region have fewer food options than their peers elsewhere so they attack people sometimes. I don’t know if this is still the case. I learned all of this from a mid 00’s documentary about the original event and the history of the region since. It’s very possible the region is rough enough now that they don’t even have lions anymore, at least that was what the ecologists were predicting would eventually happen.
@frankdryer2935

The region is Tsavo and the only reason the lions in real life didn't have manes is because of those harsh conditions. They adapted because of the heat and many of the railway workers were men imported from India because many of the local workers abandoned the project due to the lions.

Ah man what a great movie. See Tsavo was a region that slave caravans leaving Africa for the Arab slave trade stopped at heavily. The lions inside Tsavo over the centuries of eating the dead or abandoned slaves evolved to see humans as prey, to where they will often ignore more resource rich animals to target an injured person. The lions in Tsavo also have an odd mutation that means the males have no manes and a lot more testosterone and adrenaline. Making them extremely violent and untrainable. That's why they used regular lions in the movie. While Remmington wasn't a real person everything else more or less happened. The lions were unusually clever and unusually aggressive even for a breed of lions known to be unusually aggressive. Think of them like Jason and Michael Myers when the rest of their fellow lions were guys like Hannibal lecter🤣 They were crazy even amongst the crazies. History is stranger than fiction!

@@jayeisenhardt1337 the same used to happen with wolves in Spain and France. Partially because the Caliphate/Normans used to execute common criminals by chaining them up and letting them die from exposure which resulted in wolves showing up to grab a free meal. This resulted in something like 25,000 people being hunted down and eaten by wolves between the 1500s and 1700s. The jurassic Park analogy is apt, in that in the novel Malcolm's whole point was "nature just sees human encroachment as new resources to adopt too and will adapt to us, sometimes better than us".

In the film they used lions that had lush manes however, in reality the lions were near mane-less. This is due to how hot it is and how much mane would be lost among the brush and thorns found in the area. Another great choice of movie!!

There is mounting evidence that lions make war. There was an altercation between several prides of lions and a couple of tribes of hyenas that lasted 18 months and killed over a hundred lions and hyenas (mostly hyenas). Most of those were never eaten. Some young male lions were observed leaving the pride at night, in the dark, and finding and sometimes killing hyenas as they slept. I suppose it's possible that something about these interloping humans triggered that behaviour in the lions of Tsavo.

This event did happen but Charles remington isent real. Patterson killed both of the lions. The real lions were actually brothers and they were rare maneless lions. The lions together killed upwards of 75 people (officially) but Patterson claimed it was in the hundreds. One lions diet supposedly consisted of at least 1/3 human and the other 2/3 human

The true number of the victims is much less than in the movie. Modern studies shown that both lions had eaten human flesh in the months before their death, but with a remarkable difference. One of them had massive problems with his teeth which might have prevented him from hunting the ususal prey. He problably consumed about 24 humans, the other lion about 10. Most victims were indian workers who had no experience with the african wildlife. Nevertheless a terrifying number!

I was fortunate enough to see the actual lions from this story at the Field Museum in Chicago during a field trip (they were stuffed). To be honest, they didn’t look very intimidating. They were a lot smaller than the lions seen in the film (which are scary as hell).

The lions in the museum are considerably smaller than they were in life, because the pelts were not properly cared for, and by the time the museum got them, were in pretty sad shape. They had to do a lot of trimming to get the lions mounted so they wouldn't look moth eaten.

The Masai are excellent hunters, but their home territory was full of competition for protein sources. Their cattle were very valuable, used for trade, and status exchanges (like dowries). To supplement their protein, they would puncture a vein in a cow's neck, and use the blood in food. They may have drunk some of it, I'm not sure about that. The cow suffered no injury, other than the surprise of the initial puncture, kind of like a needle stick.

Man, I haven't watched this movie in years. It's a great one! They do a very good job making the lions feel so threatening and frightening. Another really good movie that's similar-ish to this (as far as general vibe and being located in Africa) is "King Solomon's Mines" staring Patrick Swayze; he plays famed literary character Allan Quatermain. Highly recommend!

Been waiting for someone to react to this movie for a longgg time! Great reaction! Interesting bits of info: one of the lions they recovered 9 bullet slugs from once it was dead. Had been shot by low power rifles that didn’t have enough energy to kill it. Also, as far north into Africa as this was (Tsavo, Kenya) these two lions didn’t have manes. Manes get more pronounced further from the equator I believe so the best maned males are typically in South Africa. Also in the movie the lions attacked “the” new hospital when in real life they may have attacked three different temporary hospitals according to reports I read although it was probably just a singular attack and not slaughtering everyone in it.

Last edit I promise. The carpet of bones in the lion’s den is accurate, there are pictures, and to this day no one can figure out why the lions dragged so many victims back and left the bones piled up like that. It really doesn’t make sense.
