CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton) tries to get Lydia (Winona Ryder) to say his name three times so he can escape into the world of the living.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Thanks to the carelessness of a cute little dog, newlyweds Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin are killed in a freak auto accident. Upon arriving in the outer offices of Heaven, the couple finds that, thanks to a century's worth of bureaucratic red tape, they're on a long celestial waiting list. Before they can earn their wings, Davis and Baldwin must occupy their old house as ghosts for the next fifty years. Alas, the house is now owned by insufferable yuppies Catherine O'Hara and Jeffrey Jones. Horrified at the prospect of sharing space with these obnoxious interlopers, Davis and Baldwin do their best to scare O'Hara and Jones away, but their house-haunting skills are pathetic at best. In desperation, the ghostly couple engage the services of a veteran scaremeister: a yellow-haired, snaggle-toothed, profane, flatulent "gonzo" spirit named Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton). The problem: Beetlejuice cannot be trusted-especially when he falls in love with O'Hara and Jones' gloomy, black-clad teenaged daughter Winona Ryder. Beetlejuice producer David Geffen, director Tim Burton, and composer Danny Elfman were also involved in an animated TV-series spin-off.

It kinda shows a little depth. Despite his antics, I've always wondered if there is somewhat a little bit of sadness to BJ. He's stuck as he is so he rolls with it but something tells me that if he could, he would probably give it up for peace.

“Why” That line delivery always got me. It’s not mocking, it’s not sarcastic, it’s not even demeaning. It’s soft, almost whispered. He’s genuinely confused, and the way he says it makes me believe if it had been a different circumstance he would have wanted to keep on that topic.

I just love how even beetlejuice is like "why ? " when lydia wants to die. I mean it's a kinda subtle moment that maybe he actually does care

I was just about to comment on it. That part has always intrigued me. There is a pause written there in the script. It's not so much that he cares about her but there's genuine confusion from beetlejuice. He's a prisoner of the world he lives, which Lydia views as a free world. It's a small moment that I could easily say is one of the top memorable moments in the film.

+Claudio Torres Yeah it's very subtle but very rich. Someone dishonest would have a suspicious mind, it's completely illogical for him that anyone would willingly choose death and so he can't help but wonder "why?", "what do you try to achieve or gain from this terrible deal?" and then he goes right back into his salesman act, seeing that he could use it for his personal interests. It shows you who he really is and the truth about death and that the living have nothing to envy from the dead.

As long as Burton, Keaton, and Ryder are all involved, I'm game. Obviously Shadix can't come back since he is really deceased and Jones can't come back because he is a real-life pedophile (ironic, considering that is the impetus behind Beetlegeuse wanting to marry Lydia beyond wanting out so he could cause mischief again, instead of being restrained by the bureaucratic red tape of the Neitherworld's bylaws) and Baldwin would need to lose his excess weight and stop actually coming off like a raving loon, but I'd also be up for a Davis return, if they need her.

Burton, Keaton and Ryder seem to have already confirmed their involvement in the sequel. It’ll be interesting to see how they either come up with a story without the rest of the cast, or how they picture Baldwin and Davis’s characters.

“...why?” this line always stood out to me. the delivery is fantastic. he’s not mocking her, or joking, or being sarcastic, or playing a character. it’s the only genuine thing that beetlejuice says in the entire movie. this dead man, obsessed with the idea of being alive, is mind-blown at the fact that a living girl wants to be dead. in just one word, he communicates that death isn’t something to wish upon yourself, and that life is a precious thing that shouldn’t go to waste. it’s incredibly powerful.

I always thought he said that because the afterlife sucks, and he wants to get out of it. Juice probably saw the afterlife as more of a prison, than the fun of the living life.

Lydia: I wanna get in. BJ:....Why? That part always sounded so odd. I feel like Beetle Juice was genuinely facinated by Lydia. She's the only character in the entire movie that actually wants to die while everyone else is so adamant about living.

B.J. still has his human side. I almost cried when he asked Lydia if she would help him get out of there. Almost like he was begging her for help and he sounded so happy to have someone else to talk to.The saddest scene for me was him trying so hard to make the Maitland's like him. But the saddest one was when he was begging the Maitlands to stay, and then inviting them to his house. He looked so hurt when he looked back and they were gone. Anyone else ever been judged by how they looked, and judged by what other people say about them besides me?

I don't know if anybody has mentioned this yet, but the original director for this film was going to be Wes Craven. Of course, back then, the film was going to be far darker and less comedic. The Maitland's death was going to be more graphic, the deetzes were to have a second younger daughter named Cathy, which Beetlejuice was going to horrifically mutilate while in the form of a rabid squirrel, and he was going to want to rape Lydia instead of marry her. I'm actually glad they changed it and made it funnier.

I think my favorite line in this movie, oddly enough, is the way that Beetlejuice says "Why?" at 0:37. I feel like that was the only crack of humanity that we'll ever get to see in the character. I don't know, I just feel like he says that in a certain way that implies some things about the character. But I'm likely reading into it too much. ;P

"Me?! What snake?! You kids and your imagination!" Burton really has a heart for teens! 🧡 He's giving them credit here for the power of their mind and cleverness. But it goes deeper than that. He knows about the suffering that they are prone to at that age, I assume he even knows about feel like wanting to die at this fragile and confusing period. And he wants to give hope with Lydia's story - he shows that deep down she doesn't really want to die, but wants and needs another life. She flourishes and is a happy teen at the end. Burton must be a very lovely man in my imagination.

Interestingly enough, when Beetlejuice was a success, it helped greenlight the 1989 Batman. There was however skepticism about having Keaton play the part Batman with his comedy typecast as BJ. It was only when Jack Nicholson signed onto the role of The Joker that the film was given the OK. 🃏

Photons from a light source bounce off of him and some of them go into her eyes. I'm not an expert on how it gets processed from there, but essentially she is able to compare that image to her memories of what fingers look like, and count them without much effort.

Ok everyone commenting on the Keaton's Why? Line in the script. Lily and Beatlejeuse are polar opposites in a way. He's really a normal guy who wants to be in the real world again, whereas Lily is the morbid goth loner that can't fit in the real world and wants to escape into a fantasy morbid universe.

I may be completeley wrong, but I always thought that the real reason why Beetlejuice couldn't say his own name is because it would be kind of a cheat. If he could say his own name 3 times, he would be able to get out of the Afterlife when he pleased.

Based on how effortlessly he saved the day, and controlled inanimate objects & manifested things from thin air at the end, Beetlejuice seems to be the "ghost with the most" indeed

Michael Keaton has been in some amazing movies, he is an accomplished actor by any standard. That being said his role in this movie is my all time favorite. Just like Heath Ledger playing the Joker in that Batman movie Keaton is the only actor who could have played this role.
