Shortly after a mystery substance leaked into the waters of a small oasis in the Arizona desert, bugs in the area would begin to display larger than normal body mass. However, shortly after a local spider zoo keeper found the bugs, he immediately began feeding these bugs to the spiders. This quickly resulted in larger Arachnids, but as they continued to grow, this would result in an invasion in the small town. In todays episode, we will discuss what happened to these spiders, and how it might be possible for them to grow to the size they did!
Thank you for watching Roanoke Gaming and I hope you enjoy The Gigantism of 8 Legged Freaks Spiders Explored | Yes it's about as horrible as it sounds

From what I remember, the title change was not because he liked the line, but because the Iraq War had just started, and "Arach Attack" suddenly sounded...unfortunate. That he liked the line was possibly why that phrase was ultimately made into the new title, but the change would happen regardless.

This was literally my favorite movie in preschool, it's so cool that you covered it. It's also what sparked my interest in spiders, by kindergarten I could spell cephalothorax and identify random spiders around the house. My dumb teacher actually complained to my parents that I was reading too many non-fiction books. So yeah, I was basically that kid riding his bike to see some spiders. Now I'm 24 doing manual labor and drinking too much. Funny how that happens.

This movie is so God damned good. The story is pretty solid tbh. The way the sequence of events happen honestly makes sense because they follow the rules set within thier own movie. Like disappearing and bringing back characters with the mine, the way the phone line goes down and the subsequent fight to get the 1 cell phone in town some cell service. Anyone who says it's bad isn't paying attention to the movie. The perfume part was pulled off way better than evolutions head and shoulders idea. *to be a boomer about it too, having 1 cell phone in a town like that back then is so goddamned realistic.

Another impossibility in all this is that spiders in real life are incredibly cannibalistic, even mothers will often see their own young as easy snacks. Even if they were smarter like in this film they'd still be constantly eating each other as it's an abundant food source for them

Even during mating session it is risky. A lot of males end up dead and even so if both strike each other and does not get any aide then their open circular system cannot close up their wounds and they both will die. The only few spiders that would survive are the trap door spiders and that made up species in the movie.
@krlosz1996
@krlosz1996 2 жыл бұрын
depends on the species, there are several that are communal and social like a few huntsman spiders that live in nests that can contain hundreds of spiders without cannibalism being an issue
@k.v.7681
@k.v.7681 2 жыл бұрын
@@krlosz1996 Yup. Cannibalism in spiders is seriously misunderstood. For starters, while common, it's not nearly as common as people believe. It's also wayyyy more subtle. Some spiders never cannibalise. Others will have males willingly kill themselves to give food to the females. Others again like the Brazillian wolfspiders will have males hunting older females to "renew" the population, which is pretty unique. All in all, cannibalism for spiders is an advantage for selection and reproduction, not a drawback.

Interesting side note: if spiders managed to grow to that size, they almost certainly wouldn't have the ability to crawl along walls and ceilings since the setae on their feet would never be able to support so much mass. We see this already in a lot of (normal-sized) tarantulas that have developed larger claws to aid in climbing. I know it's not much, but at least it would put the bastards back on a more 2-dimensional warfighting environment rather than 3D one.

The first spider that attacked Joshua is Avicularia Avicularia aka the Pink Toe Tarantula. This tarantula is a super docile tree dweller from South America in and around the jungles of Columbia. They prefer to run and jump away, as they are super shy and heavily prefer to avoid any confrontation. Most spiders and tarantulas are like this too. We do hear about spider bite reports. Especially from venomous species that can really make a very healthy man sick. This is rare, as they only bite if they feel cornered. Tarantulas especially will give warnings if they feel cornered by showing what is called a threat posture. Their body flexes in a L shape, the upper body and first 4 pairs of legs are raised in the air towards the perceived threat. You can see under them and their fangs. The more defensive tarantulas from Africa and Asia take it one step further by slapping the ground. This it to intimidate to show how fast they are. It is rare they will bite first without warning but it is possible they will. All tarantulas can slap, and even will slap their owner. My Texas brown, one of the most docile slapped my hand when I was removing her water bowl for cleaning. Still do not let this movie fool you into thinking spiders are bad and aggressive. They are defensive creatures and to them we're fricken giants.

Spiders have to molt when they grow. Thats usually what kills a spider before it gets so large that it can't breathe. Its much less about the amount of oxygen in the air and more to do with how healthy a spider is when it molts. If a spider grows too fast it won't have the energy or a proper diet. So they would literally just die even if the science behind the growth was sound. Also fun fact Jumping spiders and tarantulas are extremely intelligent and can sometimes recognize their owners

23:20 is hysterical to me, because you have a jumping spider literally ushering other spiders to get into the mall in slower "go go go" sort of fashion. That said, the one thing you missed regarding the spiders moult is that... they simply grow way too fast and don't eat nearly enough to sustain them. The spiders wouldn't be out of their first moult before they start their next with that sort of exponential growth in the first few days, and so they'd all almost certainly die mid-moult as they get stuck in old exoskeletons and then wind up still trying to moult again. Moulting is also a process that takes a huge amount of energy on the part of spiders - certainly not enough for one single man to feed the sheer number of spiders we see. Basically, even if there was theoretically enough oxygen to support spiders of this size, they would NEVER grow to that size in just a few days naturally, and any imbalance in their system causing them to grow faster than they can manage to moult would inevitably just kill them as they'd die mid-moult due to being unable to shed properly. Not even talking about the fact that many, many, many species of spiders are cannibals and even with higher intelligence, these eight legged dudes would probably just eat each other first. Maybe they'd just say "Sorry bro but I'm hungry" given the higher intelligence and be a bit polite about it.

I forgot Scarlett Johansson was in this film. She's aged well. As always mate great video. Keep being rad my friend, stay safe out there, and thanks for the Merch will order a hoodie later. I hope you get those posters at some point. Your Halo:CE Cpl Mendoza quote had me dying.

My dad tried to kill a spider with hairspray once. It didn’t work, so he said: “At least his hair is set.”

Had a rose hair tarantula for almost 8 years, literally the most chill pet ever. You could handle her as much as you want and leave her where you wanted since she wouldnt go far at all or even just stay put

My dad took me to see this at our local drive-in when it came out. . .so there I was, an arachnophobe watching gigantic spiders on a gigantic screen. . .my skin was crawling for almost the whole movie, but we still enjoyed the night.

Here for the watch minutes before it gets yanked. I did enjoy being a young child watching my arachnophobic dad attempt to watch it because he could handle them if they were little ones, but boy he freaked out as they got bigger. I was a strange child.

@@adrammelechthewroth6511 hey now, he watched the whole thing, which for an arachnophobe, is a big deal imho. I don't have a fear like that so I can't relate but I commend him for sitting through the whole thing. He still will jokingly quote the "Eight legged freaks!!" thing when he's talking about spiders. Occasionally he's over reacted, but that's phobias for you. :P Will or not, monke brain is gonna make sure you don't die.

@@Crisjola but spiders cant get that big. Their skeleton cant support that weight and there isnt enough oxygen for them to grow that big. Spiders and other antropods are limited in growth of available oxygen so global warning does something right. Even if they were that big for some miracle then you could still take them out with a hammer or a gun as their bones are thinner then you would expect.

@@youtubestudiosucks978 I'm not arguing with you, Roanoke lays that all out himself as to why we no longer have giant centipedes that are 7+ feet long and other giant bugs. I'm saying if someone has an irrational fear of a thing, regardless of the actual logic, you're gonna have that fear and while as a child I thought it was funny, as an adult, I applaud my dad for sitting through it. And we 100% have a reason to have monke brain dislike skitter skitter. :P Evolution has taught us that tiny spiders can cause death/the loss of limbs (and then death) so just making them bigger is more to freak out that primal part of you brain because now it's a much bigger threat that our mammal and/or lizard brain is trained to react to. Like if a dog was snapping and snarling at you except instead of it being at hip height, it was the size of a school bus and snarling. Your body would be hitting flight mode even harder than with just a normal sized dog.

@@Crisjola spider only developed stronger poisons because they got smaller. Ancient giant spiders didnt have any poison so their prey had to suffer the whole ordeal. To gain a power you got to lose a power and those exoskeleton animals chose poison over size.

Something you didn't mention but would have also needed to have happened is some change to their locomotive systems. Normal spiders basically use pressure to move, that's why you will see spiders suddenly stop, they need to repressurize their limbs. But these big spiders are relentless.
