I'm so glad that the podcast invited Dr Dunbar to the show. The Gilded Age is not only elaborate dinners and dress, but also the realities of the South for Black Americans and the oppression of the white working class in Pittsburg. The majority of the show highlights the "minority" wealthy class, but also takes the time to unpack the realities of the majority of Americans in other ways. Thanks for taking the time to have a balanced conversation about this particular "era" in America.

I hope they explore Agnes's past and marriage more. Her behavior and motives are driven by this. I remember in the first season that Ada stated to Marion, that "Agnes 's husband was not a man you want to be alone with". I personally think this is the main reasons she wanted to keep Ada from marriage. She desires companionship but not marriage for herself. If they n explore this in the future episodes. It can help Marion to come closer to Agnes more how the selfishness of the men in the family created the stern Agnes today.

I love this series and also look forward to a season 3. The Gilded Age is the only reason I keep HBO Max. I love the Africa-American story line. When I learned that Audra MacDonald was in the series and Julian Fellows was writing I anxiously waited the premier. I also need to covey how dazzling the musical score is for this series. I am a long time collector of film scores and the Gregson-Williams is right up there with the best. Also Alicia and Tom, you commentary after every episode extends the pleasure with entertaining creative and historical insights. Your work on behalf of this series is brilliant as well.

Was so disappointed with the plot development of Peggy's budding romantic involvement with her married boss. It violates her character imo. She was one of the only characters with a well developed sense of who she was and what she stood for. Shagging the married boss is an insult to who she is, all for cheap drama. Is this the same character who helped Ms Brook stay strong when she was tempted?

I love this show but I don’t enjoy what they are doing to Peggy. First her child dies off camera, then she just has to return to 67th street, because god forbid we get to see life in Brooklyn for the Black middle class. Now she’s an accomplice to adultery? I’m going to sit and watch what happens but I’m seeing a lot of missed opportunities to tell Black stories in this series. LOVE the trip to Tuskegee but we truly didn’t need a romance sub plot with these two characters. While every major white female character gets to keep their proverbial moral hands clean. Lastly, if they had casted T Thomas with an actor closer to his actual appearance- it would offer much more nuance to the social conditions among Blacks of that time. He appeared to many as “white passing” and that played a huge role in his life and legacy. Hoping they do better in the future.
@user-xn3lz1bj1h
@user-xn3lz1bj1h 7 ай бұрын
Love your commers in every way. While the actor playing T. Thomas Fortune is excellent casting someone closer to the appearance of the real T. Thomas Fortune would have helped the audience understand so much about American slavery and howFortune’s attitudes were formed due to being in places and spaces that Peggy and her parents would would have been prevented from entering and experiencing.

Casting sometimes fails to pick up on the small things. There is a huge difference of treatment for a person of color who is a « mulatto » without color, than a slightly light skinned person. That would have been a great subplot.
