The Gilgamesh Epic and Its Interpretations,a lecture by Prof. Ed Greenstein of the Bible Department
The Epic of Gilgamesh is a great and extensive narrative poem from ancient Mesopotamia. One can find many themes in the epic, underlying the adventure-filled plot. Among those that will be discussed is the tension between civilization and nature that is featured in the structural analysis of G. S. Kirk.

Interesting and enjoyable lecture. The method and specific types of things to pay attention to through out a "Story" are very effective and insightful. A generous gift. IMO

I've been enjoying the Prof's video lectures and papers ever since I read his recent translation of "Job". Amazing stuff that really ties into mysticism of all cultures. The whole balancing of "civilized" vs "natural" elements of humanity is the same problem we struggle with today! Also thanks for the childrens' book recommendations, just ordered a copy of the trilogy!

The grate library of the seventh century b.c.assyrian king ashur panipal was unearthered in 19th in 1850 and thousands of tablets found there were transported to to british museum .amoung these was the flood-tablet ,deciphered by george smith in 1872 which altered him to the existence of ancient epic of GILGAMESH.self-- taught scholar george smith labored for years at british museum before stumbling on a a clay tablet from NINEVAH(part of mesopotamia)one winter day 1872 . Its contents stunned his generation, upended the way the bible is read , and reintroduced to the world and EPIC poem lost for millennia.that's all firmed written story about that gilgamesh and remaind are rumours and a waste of time.gilgamesh was from zagross mountain.if i found more, will put here fore reseacher friends.thank you.

RE: 54min in-I believe an assess jaw bone is a popular musical instrument in some cultures, this seems more likely than he just 'found a jawbone'. Im no expert, but this glaring omission has made me question the rest.

I am student in social i got only one sentence that is Gilgamesh is a great epic poem of mesopotamians so i was curues for so more detail about it so i asked about it then I learned more about it , i searched in text book only that one sentence is there so in youtob i asked it

Thank you for sharing this. Prof. Greenstein did not fully flesh out the synchronicity nor the diachronicity very well (IMO). I would have rather enjoyed hearing that as well. Overall, well presented, if not perfectly shot by the videographer. ;)

All this going around and around and we have to understand this and understand that to understand the epic of gilgamesh Because its tell about the story of the flood and Utna nubishtum which is Noa as it is in Quran and torah befor morthan 1000 year and its tell they story of thr flood in difrent way we Noah warrend his ppl but Utna Bushtum did not he said to his ppl the Gods hate me and i have to leave with aboate and i have to take with me the seed of evey living thing . And this is painfull for both religions Islam and jews when its look like some one eals have writen the same stroy and Tura is update for what Balylonian and summerian mythe or epic of gligamish and enuma elish the epic of creation

Could the story be the story of Adamu (Enkidu) and some other pre-man creature named Gilgamesh and how a goddess (one of the race of creatures who genetically created humans) wanted to civilize Adamu and breed him like the animal he was?

I don't like this guys negative view of prostitutes: Prostitutes were highly regarded as a facet of a society, in fact even of a civilization. He has a very Jewish viewpoint, rather than a Greek Roman or Assyrian way of looking at characters, he's too judgmental.

I am rather disappointed that a professor would teach a class and mention Genesis 6:3-5 and promote this ideology of Gods son/angels taking human daughters to create a super humans race. This is coming from a professor from the Department of Bible?!? This hybrid God/angel myth is just that, a created myth If the professor is going to use the Bible in his course, he should know that in 1 Corinthians 15:39-40 it clearly states angels and humans are very different, just like land animals, birds and fish are different. A fish can't have sex with a cow? The same goes for angels and humans. In Mark 12:25 it also clearly states that angels cannot marry, nor be given in marriage. According to Gods law, if you want to have sex and procreate, you need to be married to participate in that act! Genesis is a book of genealogies and focuses on human families. The sons of God are the faithful followers of God and the daughters of men were those who did not follow the Laws of God. The Bible's Old and New Testament makes it very clear who are Sons of God. John 1:12 Romans 8:14 1 John 3:1 Exodus 4:22-23 2 Samuel 7:14 In fact, fallen angels in the Bible are NEVER called sons of God!!

+jair molero The Bible is NOT cryptic? Any time there is mention of a dream, or vision, the meaning or explanation is ALWAYS followed. A lovely example is Daniel 7. Which is basically Daniel’s vision of the four beasts. From Daniel 7:1-14 the dream is documented, yet Daniel 7: 15-28 goes into detail to interpret the dream. If you take the time to READ it is very clear. There have been people out there bend on deterring others from reading God words in order to promote their own agenda. Enforcing and perpetuating this idea that the Bible is cryptic, with errors, it’s all fairytales or what ever other lies they are always used to discourage anyone from actually READING the words in all that collection of book. Many people know how influential the Bible can be and many of those same people know that ignorant people are far easier to control and manipulate, compared to those who are knowledgeable and aware. Now regarding your comment “Not taking into account the possibility of insertion of lies and deception” You might want to investigate how and when those edits were introduced and seek out the possible motives. This is all document history. The information is out there….investigate for yourself.

+jair molero How is the entire Bible a myth when there have been actual historical discoveries that have been confirmed by archeology and history. Due to time…one example is that the Hittites which were considered to be a myth, were discovered in the last century through Biblical and Archaeological research. +IC Henry : If 2,000 years from now future archaeologists found a few Marvel Comics would they be correct to believe Spiderman was real and existed? They would have evidence showing NYC was real, and Spiderman lives in and most of his adventures take place in NYC. Just because a few things in the Bible might be historically correct, (most of it isn't), that does not mean the whole Bible is true and historically correct.
