Rogerio Ceni is a unicorn in the history of football. He is the soccer equivalent of a scientific accident, a goalkeeper who discovered a gift for free kicks that would take him to World Cups and straight to club legend status. He was also, of course, a very good goalkeeper separate from his tremendous goalscoring.
Ceni has the world record for most goals scored by a goalkeeper. It is not particularly close. It is possible there will never be a player like Rogerio Ceni again, a unique gift from the creative milieu that is Brazil.
Much Love,
The Zealand

I am a São Paulo fan myself and I really enjoyed this video.Congrats! Other major accomplishments from Rogerio Ceni are the 3 Brazilian Championship in a row(2006/07/08), no other team was able to do the same until today. Another thing was his ability to play as a extra defender thanks to his skill with his feet, he used to play really long and insane balls for the strikers and used to play really advanced, like Neuer does today. On top of all that he was a true leader, he played 980 games as the captain of Sao Paulo squad, I believe that is another record. In addition to that as a true São Paulo fan("São Paulino") I can say that he excel in represent the fans, in the interviews, with the media, he was an iconic symbol that always said the correct words that represented what the fans were feeling and thinking. A trully Legend, the Myth!!

Rogério also had a couple of very funny encounters with the media. The most famous one happened in 2006, where a journalist said on live TV that Rogério didn't get criticized for his mistakes, and accused him of faking a signature from Arsenal for his own benefit. Upon hearing of it, Rogério called the network to confront the journalist in a very awkward manner. Also, one of the best color commentators in Brazil had a leaked audio saying "Rogério Ceni is annoying as fuck" (Rogério Ceni é chato pra caralho), also on live TV.

The myth! If he had played in any european league and did a third of what he did he would have been considered the goat. In 2007 brazilian national league São Paulo conceded 19 goals in 38 matches so he was pretty solid at his goalkeeping role and he scored 7. Also the save at 10:20 was amazing, legend says Gerrard still cries when he thinks about it.

Curiosities about Ceni: he is the player with the most appearances for a club (1237 appearances). He is the goalkeeper with the most official penalty saves (51 saves). He has the record for most appearances as captain for the same team. Ceni already played the role that Neuer did with his feet in the late 90s and early 2000s.

I love that the internet and the football KZfaqrs are suddenly in love with Rogerio Ceni. On of the greatest to ever do it. I was buying him in my teams back in 03/04, when it still wasn't even called Football Manager. The man is a legend, my father went to Brasil for work, and asked where he could buy a Dida shirt for his goalkeeper son. I'm a São Paulo fan and this is possible the best and detailed foreign video about our eternal captain. Thanks for your research and work spreading the word about one of the best. Just two things: the International Cup against FC Barcelona was '92, the '93 one was against AC Milan (São Paulo won both), Rogério was on the bench in this one. Also, he was the São Paulo leading goalscorer at the 2005 season even being a GK. Rogério was born em 1973, Marcos and Dida too. These two were Brazil's number 1 at 02 and 06 FWCs, respectively. Maybe the only thing Rogério didn't accomplished in his carrer. Again, thank you for your work. I would like every big football fan to know Rogério Ceni.

Ceni is a massive legend. If he had had his career in Europe, he'd be more recognized. He's often considered to be a gimmick, not a proper great GK, but far from that. In his prime, he was superb. He was our 3rd GK in 2002 (Dida was special and Marcos had worked with Scolari previously) and our 2nd in 2006 (this was his prime, but Dida being in his prime as well while playing the UCL, hard to compete, but I agree Dida was better in his prime). Before he got too many injuries and started to get fat (by his final ~4-5 years you can see his beer belly lol), he was a legit great GK. By the time he was 24/25, Alisson's age when he went to Europe, he was already pretty well established as a GK here, much more than Alisson when he left Internacional (also called for the national team). Had he joined Europe at that time, without multiple injuries and still young, he would've been even more special. Up until the ~mid/late 00s, he was really good. Ofc, some fails here and there, but all great GKs have them. Overall, he was performing more miracles than failing, and he was very secure, alongside his revolutionary skills with his feet. I'm a São Paulo fan, but Rogério is a legit great player. Even without his goals, he would've been a memorable and underrated GK.

I'm not brazilian but I remember vividly Sao Paulo's 2005 Copa Libertadores win because of Rogerio Ceni. The entire team was amazing. They beat River Plate in he semis by squashing them almost scientifically. His precision was next level and managers would struggle on how to defend set pieces against him. A foul close to the box was a criminal offense. Only in The Americas would something like this be possible. Ceni was not even the first goalkeeper in South America that scored goals consistently, Higuita, Chilavert and others also did it. They would have never been given that chance in Europe.

It's often said here in Brazil that, if Rogério Ceni were to play for a major club in Europe and got the same oportunities as he did in Brazil, he would be up there as one of the football GOAT's... One thing to comment is that he is somewhat of a controversial person, and is often criticised because of his "strong personality", even being described as "annoying as fuck" by one of Brazil's most proeminent football commentator at that time, in a leaked audio... Since his retirement as a player, he became a head coach, and his last work was in São Paulo itself, the club that helped him become the great player that he was... He was then fired, because again of his strong personality against some players in the squad. He got into arguments with players that were not intense enough during training and matches, making the squad leaders complain directly to the board about his attitude, and finally leading to his sacking... All in all, he's still one of the most promising head coaches Brazil has revealed the past few years, and I personally expect a lot from him in this new role.

It's very difficult to project, but many are completely convinced that Rogério would be the best goalkeeper in history if he had played for a big European club. Maybe we played each other (especially if it's FIFA 12 or 13).

I grew up supporting São Paulo with my dad, so I watched pretty much every single game I could and would always see this guy play. Not only his free-kick taking was top class, but he was also great at penalties! It was actually normal for one to see him score. Like "oh, São Paulo won 2-0 and Rogério scored". "Oh, cool". That for a keeper is saying a lot, as Zealand brilliantly points out here. But the thing is that he was also an amazing keeper. Look up São Paulo vs. Universidad Católica from Chile in 2013 (in Chile, by the way) and you'll see him - already pretty old, with shoulder issues and nearing retirement - have one of the greatest matches I've ever seen from a keeper. Also, the only goalkeeper I've seen play with his feet as well as Rogério is Neuer - he was just that good. People always used to say - jokingly but not 100% - that he could do a job as an outfielder. Wonderful to see him being recognised here! Great video, Z!

Another story i can share as a São Paulo supporter is a very very special one. So basically in 2011 a very heated classic was going on between São Paulo and Corinthians (y'all might remember corinthians as the team that beat Chelsea at the club world cup in 2012) and in the second half Corinthians made a foul and guess who was going to the mark? Yep, Ceni. But the thing is that if he scored that goal, it would be its 100th goal in his career. The stars aligned and everything was right, he lobs it with a perfect strike and hits the mark for the first goalkeeper in history to score 100 goal AGAINST one of São Paulo biggest rivals. He was trully legendary and i'm so very happy that i had the opportunity to see he play in my life. Thank you for sharing his amazing story Zeeland!

Fellow Brazilian here, with a ball on his hands and his feet, the man with a big nose and loosing a few hair was just a legend. But if he workes with someone as a coach, everyone says he is unbearable. Friendly when a friend, annoying as a colleague.

I feel like being a goalkeeper who is good at free kicks must be a great advantage as goalkeepers are gonna be the best at exploiting other keepers on freekicks, because they probably know the weakness of a goalkeeper more than most players on the field.

I heard about him when I was young and said to myself is anything they can't do 😅😅😅. He was considered one of the bestkeepers when Europeans never heard of him on official football stats site. Plus he knew of then gab because he thought like a goalkeeper when taking his first freekick. Edit- he also created goals 😅😅😅.

6:00 ???? São Paulo won the intercontinental cup in 1992 against barcelona, not in 1993, it won again the same cup in 1993 as well, but against Milan, and of course both years won the Libertadores as well

It seems you've been diving into brazilian football lately, Zealand. Have you ever thought about managing an FM Save in the lower leagues of Brazil?

I wonder how fun it would have been if he played for Brazil in the world cups, imagine him scoring a free kick in the finals

Maybe youtube have some videos of when this goalkeeper free kick try went wrong, and the team end up suffering a counter attack goal... :p

It is also worth mentioning José Luis Chilavert as well. Not as impressive as Ceni, but he still managed to score 62 goals (a record broken by Ceni itself).

I want to know how many times the free kick went straight to the opposition for them to knock a long ball up and score in an unguarded goal.
