From what I have seen, the first light units in LTR are review and more gentle but then it ramps up a lot. So even if it feels below level at the start it ends up being way above level once you finish it and the rest of the grade 1 reading units! I believe they purposely start off gentle and pick up the pace.

I loved the booster cards too. If I recall there were some pages suggesting to write the words on an index card so that the child can play a little game and read the words from the index cards and not from the booster page.

Thank you, this validated the same concerns I’ve been having! We are in TGATB LA 2 and I feel the same way about the reading, as well as the spelling. I’m nervous about switching though, because it would be difficult to match up where he’s at and what sounds he’s already mastered etc. It’s also hard because we both like it, but I know he’s not mastering things as well as he could be. I’ve already switched my older one to CLE, but he was past the learning to read stage.

I am thankful for this review. I was eyeing the level k for my incoming kindergartener. We tried the old level k with my older one and it didn't work. I think we will just stay with All About Reading this first year and focus solely on phonics (I was feeling unsure about the reading plus all the other stuff in TGTB).

This was very helpful! I used tgatb for my oldest and we’ll be using the new level 2 course but I have been considering Abeka instead even though I already bought level 2! He’s reading just fine but I feel like there’s something missing. 🤔 Then for my second I am considering Abeka or CLE. We are using CLE kindergarten I right now and loving it and I think we’ll get kindergarten II and see how that goes. Thanks again!

We are finishing up TGTB k and honestly it’s been like passing a kidney stone. We are just rushing through it now because my daughter is over it. I purchased CLE and I feel like a weight has been lifted! My daughter does not care did the art or geography at all. 😭The reading booster cards are not convenient for us at all, so now I think I’m going to purchase learn to read with cle. Along with hooked on phonics and alpha phonics.🥴🥴 hopefully once we get her settled we can go back and review the reading booster cards and things.

I can see how it would be memorized if you worked on it multiple times without practicing in sentence form. We just went over the CK card once and then I made a decodable sentence using the CK phonogram for her to copy. And I had her read it and then highlight the /k/ sound as in CK. And I just keep adding copywork like that for her. Along with the workbook. And just swatting at the CK phonogram with a fly swatter and other games. And then just practicing reading. I definitely moved a lot slower through though. We Also planned to only do half this year and that has been working great for us. It’s give us time to grasp the new concepts. I can see how it would be way too much for a kIndergartener doing the entire level in one year though. Thanks for sharing! 😊

I gave TGTB a try a couple times with different levels for both LA and Math- and it didn’t work for us. It’s beautiful and it weaves in other subjects but it jumps around too much. It doesn’t set a good foundation. For math I’ve noticed we prefer mastery because jumping around didn’t help when some of the advanced concepts were taught but the other concepts weren’t solid. I wished it would’ve worked because it’s beautiful and affordable.

I have done Learn to Read and it worked great with my oldest, but decided to try the TGTB Kindergarten with my youngest. The booster cards and books are suppose to be separate stand alone. It is the reading program. The course book is just to reinforce what was already learned from the booster cards. You aren't suppose to move forward in the course book without mastering the booster cards first. There are the little icons at the top telling you to stop in the course book if you haven't yet mastered a certain booster card. I did use the booster cards differently. I put them on flash cards and played games. I would use letter titles and have her build them then read the word to me. We read all the books multiple times. She would read the current book and then we would pick a previous story to read again. I know a lot of people use the the free download from All About Reading and make games using the booster card words. Several of the booster cards suggest games. I would also take a sentence out the books write it on my dry erase board and have her read it me. Then she would use that sentence as copy work. Other times I would make up a sentence on my own with the booster words. It really didn't take that much time or effort on my part. If we were doing an activity or game with the words we wouldn't use the actual booster book. After a week or I would bring out the booster book and she would go through the list. Most of the time she mastered the words. We have gone though the booster cards really fast and the course book is just review. In fact we still have course work yet we are working Booster cards and books B.

I’m going to try what you have done. My daughter moved fast too. We are on booster b cards and she is only five but still finishing up level k language arts book. She forgets some words from level k. Review is good to do too. Thank you for your input I’m glad I read more comments. My daughter only gets frustrated when she doesn’t get a word right. She does need more practice and we don’t need a traditional book to get practice. Just alittle effort and imagination on our part to make it a fun way to learn. Thanks!

I did all of these things too, exactly how you’re describing only on the ones that would get her stuck and it worked great. It was very simple to do too. I believe there’s a video where Jenny Philips says that sometimes you do have to close the course book to master some booster cards, and that the course book is reinforcement. 😊 we aren’t finished with level k yet but since you’re on booster cards b, is your little one able to read books now other than the ones that come with the course?
@lizb994

@@Svargasc3 Yes my daughter can read books other than what is with the curriculum. I forgot to mention that we were reading books outside of the curriculum from the beginning. She would pick a book and read it to me before bed. Recently she started picking books up and reading without being told.

Yeeessssss!!! I have been having the same struggle with TGTB this year! It seems like there is way too much jumping around and not enough practice on one concept before introducing something new. I have actually been pre-reading weeks of lessons at a time in order to highlight all of ONE concept to work on for a week or so, and then go back and highlight a different concept with another color…and do that concept the next week…if that makes any sense! It’s been frustrating, but I love the beauty of the TGTB curriculum, so I haven’t wanted to move to something else. 😕 Now I’m considering CLE for this coming year. Thanks for being honest and kind in comparing these!

We are having the same problem with TGTB level K. So I usually close the course book and keep practicing the concept until mastered then move on and it’s working. However I am interested in CLE just in case we hit another road block and tgtb ends up being not for her. So my questions are, is there a teachers manual and do you use it? I ask because I don’t see any instructions in those units you showed. Also, is the reading program a phonetic program? I’m torn bc I love TGTB.

I didn't purchase the teacher guides for the 1st grade (I just followed the scope of sequence that they have on-line). I did, however, purchase it for the second grades. I will be sharing a flip-through once they come in! Yes, it is phonetic. :)

Thank you for sharing 🙏 I just wondered...are the reading books necessary to buy to go along with CLE learning to read program? You showed at the end of the 10th unit that it does incorporate stories?! I looked and the price of each book is like $6 or $7 and you need like 5 of them 🤦🏼‍♀️ Just wondering 🤷

We have not used them as a requirement, just an additional resource if our littles need them for extra practice. We will sometimes use just the readers in place of the course book for something different. They are designed to go along with the workbooks and advance really well with them, but again, we don't require them for completion. :)

We have the same problem with math. Way too much jumping around. Another homeschool mama friend of mine said that it is modeled after the “spiral” method of public schools. But I do not like it. The math lessons will introduce multiple different concepts in one week, basically touching on each concept and moving to the next. Then it will “spiral” back to each of those concepts over the next few weeks, along with all the other concepts…and new concepts! 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫
