I own a copy of said Bible. I have heard nothing but good things about it from the Orthodox world. I own one because it is one of the few Bibles that offers some of the extra canonical books of the Orthodox Church (i.e. 3 and 4 Maccabees, etc.) that the Catholic Bible doesn’t contain. Also, I own it because a professor at my alma mater is one of the priests who helped compile and edit the OSB.

I have the Orthodox Study Bible, and I like it, but from my perspective, it is really very light on the 'study' part. Very few notes. Little commentary. I don't find it exceptionally useful for study. But I am comparing it to the other study bibles I've used. If it is all you have, it's great. A good starting point, but I would like to see the next edition expanded.

I still have the “Navarre Study Bible” from when I was Roman, and my current priest told me that it is a fantastic translation, and the scholarship on the simple annotations are excellent. ....however.... The interpretation guide notes have a lot of famous Jesuit quotes. Jesuits from before Vatican 1 aren’t too bad, and I hate to knock Romera as I understand his circumstances well and he practically had no seminary options where he was EXCEPT the Jesuits, but but anything they teach in general should be automatically suspect to Orthodox, as a general principle. If I could get one without the Jesuits, it would be 10% smaller (10 volumes, including the Latin vulgate In parallel), and a perfect bible for a Western Rite Orthodox, in my opinion.

One lovely resource (though it fills up a whole bookshelf) is "Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture". You get to see what pretty much every church father said about pretty much every verse. (You can also buy an e-book version for the Logos Bible study app for about $300, which is a bargain considering how much content you get). Another one that has just the Gospels is the Catena Aurea, compiled by the Catholic saint Thomas Aquinas. It says what all of the church fathers, East and West, said about each verse of the Gospels.

Great Bible. Only issues are that the OT notes could use some work and that the OT translation isn't always an accurate translation of the Septuagint. Take a look at R. Grant Jones's (Anglican Bible reviewer) review of this book. He points out many translation errors with the OT. Perhaps a 2nd Edition can fix these issues. Other than that, the OSB is phenomenal. Every English speaking Orthodox Christian today should own one.

I still don't understand why they went with the NKJV for the NT. King James was a Protestant who had no authority to translate the bible and made his Bible translation for Protestants. Also, this should have included 4th Maccabees and Enoch in the Septuagint. Otherwise, it seems like a great study Bible from the orthodox perspective considering the notes.

Strong's Concordance is an excellent resource and every Bible student should have one around. However, it uses the Masoretic Hebrew for its OT, rather than the Greek of the Septuagint. Orthodox are supposed to use the Septuagint as their primary OT Text. MT Hebrew is secondary, as the two cannot always be read "synoptically" and are structured differently. That is because they are based on different scriptural traditions, and the Septuagint often has superior readings, esp. when it agrees with the Dead Sea Scrolls and both differ from the MT.

Me personally I really don't like that the pages are so thin for a study Bible, print could be a little bit larger but is good, it should have a leatherette softcover version too if they decided to print on such thin paper instead of hard cover only, and a lot of experts have noted that the study notes are good but not the best/extensive. Especially on the old testament part. And some translation issues (presumably some shortening due to cost issues with the publisher). I hope they make a re-issue.
@tabletalk33
@tabletalk33 Күн бұрын
Yes, I'm afraid the OSB is a bit of a mess. They need to go back to the drawing board because extensive changes are needed. The OT is NOT from the LXX as it is supposed to be! More commentary notes from the Church Fathers are needed. A revised edition with these and other corrections is sorely needed!

Because Luther wanted to use the same Old Testament as the Jews do. The Jews don't include the deuterocanonical books in their Bible because they were written later than the other books of the Old Testament. (One traditional Orthodox story is that the Jews had the deuterocanonical books in their Bible at one point, but stopped using them because they saw that these books clearly pointed to Jesus and didn't want Jews to convert to Christianity---but that's just kind of silly.)

To be fair, unless you know greek and can read both testaments on the prototype (I know that the septuagint is a translation but since it has divine approval (ie christ and the apostles quote directly from it) for me its settled), you are going to have small errors or omissions here and there because each language has its own nuances. For example in the parable of the last judgement when Christ declares damnation for the goats the greek phrase can both mean "depart from me into the eternal fire prepared FOR the devil and his angels" or "depart from me into the eternal fire prepared BY the devil and his angels" at the same time, indicating that hell was made for the devil (so the humans were not supposed to end up there, they could do otherwise), because he invented it for himself (meaning that hell does not exist from God's side, but only from the side of those who make it for themselves). Because the passage permits both translations, selecting either of those loses the nuance.

depends. the Palestinian Canon, which the Jewish Council of Javneh decided to use for the Masoretic version, doesn't have the Deuterocanon. the Septuagint, a Jewish translation into Greek, does. the Dead Sea Scrolls more closely follow the version that was translated into the Septuagint.

the old testament is the national literature of a people, the books written in it span centuries and it's filled with different genres. Some books are just lists of prayers and songs, others are long histories. The new testament much shorter, all of it books written within a few decades after Jesus, and they are almost completely centred around him. A good chunk isn't a narrative that can be re interpreted as just metaphorical stories, but letters from early Christians just talking about what supernatural stuff they believe and why they literally believe it. Some of the Pauline epistles even have the benefit of most scholars agreeing they are from Paul, I think its obvious why the new testament is easier to understand.
