I have a video up on how to sell on eBay. That is the easiest direct to collector venue. One can list on abebooks for a monthly fee but that gets into the slow going business of being a bookseller. I can answer this. Lay them down. In all honesty all books should be stored, at least long term, on their sides and not standing up on a shelf. You can get away with it with smaller books that are relatively thin, but keep in mind that, when stored upright, the shelf is supporting the edges of the boards and not the pages. This puts strain on the binding. It may not seem like much strain, but over decades, or centuries, it will cause the binding to weaken and eventually separate from the book. My general rule of thumb is anything larger than 8vo, and around an inch thick, should never be stored standing up at all. Don’t even risk it. Secondly, a thing to remember about storing books standing up on shelves is that they need to be supported on the sides at all times. The drawback to this is that it can cause friction and wear to decorative covers, especially those with gilding. Also, it’s typically how the bands at the top and bottom of the spine wear. Because, inevitably you’re going to end up pulling on the top band to pull the book off the shelf. Of course the worst possible way to store a book is to have it resting on its spine or foredge. That can destroy an old book in seconds. I’m assuming most people here know that already but you never know who might read these comments. It can be tempting if you’re limited on space and the book is too tall for the shelf. Ultimately it’s going to be up to you to look at each book individually and evaluate how best to store it or, show it off, without causing undo stress or additional wear. There are a lot of other factors as well such as temperature and humidity fluctuations, dust, UV exposure etc… For example, if I had a first edition of Newton’s “Principia” , in its original binding, it would be in an acid free archival box. on its side, in a climate controlled room. A set of Pepy’s works in a pretty average 19th century binding, would probably be sitting upright on a shelf in my living room. Hope this response helps.

After reading my post I feel like I should ad the caveat that I am talking about long term storage. Adam is a dealer and you’re looking at his shop. I love his shop and the way he displays them is perfectly fine, for a shop. Just don’t use it as a guide for how to store your collections for 30 or 40 years. Don’t model your long term storage on any bookstore. Displaying books for sale is entirely different from long term care and storage.

It does matter. You can have a first English or first American- the rarity and importance of which affect prices. You can also have books like the famous first american ed Alice in Wonderland that used the remainder sheets of the suppressed the first English edition. It’s all those details that are as exciting and fun to discover as the actual cookie dough parts in cookie dough ice cream.
