Had the chance to talk with Teddy when I was a customer service representative for a local company. We spoke for about 30 minutes. He was an absolute gentleman, very down to earth and intelligent too. Rest in peace my friend!!

Thank you for this video and the story surrounding his passing. I went on my junior prom with Pearl, Joanne, Jennifer and Melvin. I was the one with the car and we picked up Jennifer and Teddy last. I use to blow a little bit and Melvin had a singing group. Not long after getting in the car and after we were introduced, Jennifer told us that Teddy could sing and asked him to sing for us. We were blown away when we heard him. Soon after he started, Melvin joined in at 1st tenor and I sang baritone. That was over 50 years ago and I can still hear that sweet harmony and the sound of Teddy’s voice. God is good!

I am a Philly native and I was 10 years old when Teddy Pendergass accident occurred. My mother cried her heart out and played his music everyday all I remembered was his music at that age made my soul light up. So I started playing his music and loving every song Teddy and my family were members of the same church Enon so when he passed I had the honor to go to his home going service which was massive like the life he lead! I love you Teddy Pendergass always you brought joy to my life and at 49 I still listen to “Wake up Everybody”every morning because it’s time to teach a new way♥️🙏🏾rest well…

I was 15 when I heard Teddy singing " The Love I Lost" and even today at the age of 64, when i play that song and hear Teddy singing it makes the hair on my neck stand up. I do have to confess that back when I was a teenager I used to rave about the great voice Harold Melvin had until I read it was the late great Teddy Pendergrass.

@Skygazer you said everything I’ve felt for years and years and years. I loved TKO do much but WOW when I heard the love I lost it just did something profound to me. That voice IN THAT SONG strummed the chords of my soul. He just knew what time do to make that song absolute magic. I’ve never ever forgotten that song. I remember thinking it was Melvin too. Took me a long time to discover it was teddy who gave them their unique sound. What an incomparable gift he had.

Yes it is "Cra Cra Craaaaazeeee!!!!" That I'm excited & watching his videos about graveyards! 😳 It's blowing "me" away!!! But for some reason, "I'm lovin' it!!!" And to know things about some of the artist, that "I" didn't know about them! The singers back in the day were the "BEST!!!" No music these days can top it at all!!!! Our station here has been going back to those ol' school songs!!! Now "THAT'S" when "MUSIC 'WAS' MUSIC!!!!" I can't believe I'm saying this! But "Thank You" for telling the history & "Showing" the gravesites! I L❤VE your videos! 💖💕💖💕💖

Sure, 60 was way too soon but there's comes a time I'm sure when he just wanted to rest. He'd done so much, including his work with the quadriplegic studies (sorry I know that isn't what it's called). A wonderfully talented man. I'd wish him back if he could be healthy & pain free. If not, I hope he's resting well.

Thank you for this video. Born 1980 I was a kid in the prime of his career. Flash forward to 2017 I stumbled on his song "Turn off the lights" I was MESMERIZED. Watching him on stage, he was so electrifying. I started looking for more of his songs and info. about him & discovered he had a tragic accident. When I saw him singing "In my time" in his wheelchair I cried like a baby, I was devastated that he went through such tragedy. I felt so connected to this amazing artist I never knew. REST IN PEACE FOREVER TEDDY. 🙏🏿

Back then Motown music artist sung songs that had real meaning. They sung from deep down in their souls, and the wording related to both men and women's emotions. Love, tragedies, disappointments, happiness, sadness, etc.! They related to what was happening in your neighborhoods, and in your life. Thank God that we still have Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, Smokey....who is usually the only one who is tours the most, Temptations....that have only one member from the original group still alive, the Four Tops....who also only have one member still alive from the original group, and Gladys knight....who'll be in concert at the Steven Tanger Center in Greensboro NC....in Nov.....

Sam Cooke is one of my favorite R&B artists and such a grisly story his death is. So many artists of my time (60s and 70s) have left this earth. I mourn every time that I hear of another tragic loss. I still remember the night that John Lennon was murdered. Howard Cosell brought the tragic news to me while watching MNF. I remember Beatlemania and my dad telling me that “A year from now, no one will remember who they are”. Many years later I heard him playing “Yesterday” on the piano. I just smiled to myself as I listened and let the moment pass without reminding him of that statement years ago.

Thank you for this I just loved Teddy. I also used to work in a cemetery helping grieving families and designing granite memorials. Teddy has a beautiful marker. Just a note to anyone that has this shiny black granite for a family member, a little auto turtle wax and buff will keep the stone shiny and repel the things that make it look messy if you know what I mean. Thank you! Good one! There will never be a time in music history like when Luther Vandoss, Teddy Pendergast, Freddie Jackson Frankie Beverly, Peabo Bryson and a few more. It was a time when singers sang - should I say, “Dey be sang in’”, without auto tune or tricks. They just opened their mouths and even angels got chills. I only hope one day soon singing will come back again. I would’ve added Donny Hathaway, but he was a decade or so earlier.

True story - my mom and aunts had tickets to see Teddy at the Arena in St. Louis in '79. One of them couldn't make it. I don’t know whatever reason that was bouncing around in her head, she invited me to come along. I was so excited going to a concert with the big girls and hearing a singer I liked even though I didn't understand, at 13, he was singing about. We weren't that far from the stage and the Arena was massive. It started off well and I was just loving the atmosphere because, you know, my first concert. All of a sudden, I saw this thing floating down, then another, then another. It took me a few minutes to realize that I was seeing panties being thrown at the stage. This was the 70's, so I don't mean thongs and G-strings - I mean bloomers! Drawls! Those navel-to-the-thigh underpants! All sizes, all colors and back then they were either cotton or that weird rayon fabric. I burst into tears, and the maternal instincts of my mother and aunts went straight out the window like those drawls were dropping. I even saw the red ones, and my mom wouldn't let me have red panties because they were what tramps wore. I didn't even know what that meant. Anyway, they were like "girl it's alright. Just have fun!" WTF?? Who the hell were these people? They were just way too into this and screaming and yelling "I LOVE YOU TEDDY!" I just wanted to go home, praying none of those parachutes landed on me because I would have just killed myself right then and there. For years, I couldn't listen to any of his songs without thinking about it. But then, when me and my best friend were 17, we snuck into a Millie Jackson concert, so I leaned to understand the Teddy thing because, well, Millie taught you some stuff! Rest well, Teddy.

To look back at those days it’s incredible to think how, sexually DEPRAVED America WAS, in Public, but behind closed doors, things were POPPING in bedrooms across the Nation when some TP was used to induce Ladies. After the first hr. or hr 1/2 of his Ladies Only Shows, the Men were let in and since Teddy had gotten the Juices flowing it made getting close a whole lot easier. My Lady would tell Me how these really fine, Suburbia looking White Chicks would just be acting a FOOL!! Talking about giving him Head, throwing keys from their Hotel room, Bloomers and G Strings and some even grabbing his Homeboy!! My friends Cousin was his Valet, so We had heard all this before. Even saw him with some Trans Ladies in the Clubs in Philly. Back in the day many Brothers were on the DL before it got it’s name. Also the Allegations that Teddy was a Switch Hitter was known but like many of Our Black Male Superstars at the time, he couldn’t live the life he wanted. He had to pay the Bills. Just listen to his songs and the titles RETROSPECTIVELY speak the TRUTH about his life. The Whole towns Laughing at Me, or If You don’t know Me by Now, Come on and go with Me, are prime examples. Being in My early 20‘s, in My first apartment, if I brought a Lady home, gave her some Hennessy, a 714 Lude, and put on TP those Drawls DROPPED by THEMSELVES. Yes Lord. Talking about Horney. Even without the other things TP could get Them legs open. You explained it like it was and it’s hilarious to hear this from a Young Woman’s perspective, and to see how Your opinion changed as You Matured. But keeping it 100, TP made feeling Sexy, and being Sexually Aroused a BEAUTIFUL thing, and Women could let Themselves be free, WITHOUT feeling like The Hoe They were, because They were with a Whole bunch of them Together. Some call him the Black Elvis, but I take offense to that, simply because Elvis appealed PRIMARILY to White Americans and Their Women, although some of Our Peoples loved him too even though He was a racist, whereas the Deaf, Blind and Ugly of Every Race LOVED TP!! It didn’t matter what You looked like, wore, or had. The Brother made Everybody feel Happy, and Sexy. He set the Standards for the later Panty Dropper Millionaire Players, R.Kelly, Aaron Hall, Levert, Keith Sweat, and, and, and. You get the Ladies, You get the CHEDDAR!! RIP TP You Dog.

Thank you for sharing your time and thoughts with us. I was in elementary school when I first noticed Teddy Pendergrass. Then, as I grew up, so did my feelings for Teddy. I honestly loved everything about Teddy P. The way he looked, talked, walked, and smiled. In my world, Teddy P was a good guy with an eloquent voice, and he knew how to use that voice to make women happy. I was in law school when my husband informed me about Teddy's unfortunate accident. I wanted to leave law school and my husband to go take care of Teddy. So when I say I loved Teddy... I really loved him. BTW, my husband favored Teddy, the complexion, voice (eloquent speaker), however, he couldn't sing, but he was a lawyer and gave great summations. My husband always knew that I loved Teddy Pendergrass, and he thought that was okay because I chose to marry him. Both are gone now, and I thank God for allowing my husband to accept my fantasy. RIP my true love❤️
